Knox2 Introduction Paraná pine is a primitive-looking conifer valued for its unusual horizontal branching, interesting triangular-shaped needles, and neat, symmetrical form. The primitive appear- ance of this evergreen tree results from its resemblance to and relationship with an ancient group of Araucaria-related conifers that dominated forests more than 145 million years ago. Not a true pine, this dark green tree has a narrow, pyrami- dal shape when young (Figure 1). Paraná pine is considered fast-growing; a tree planted at Gardens of the Big Bend in Quincy, Florida, reached a height of 30 feet and a width of 14 feet in eight years. Paraná pine reaches a mature size of 60 to 115 feet after 50 to 90 years or more in forests of southern Brazil. As it approaches maturity, the lower branches gradually die and the tree develops a dramatic dome shaped crown that somewhat resembles a candelabra due to upward pointing Figure 1. Fully mature trees may be 140 to 250 years of age, have heights up to 160 feet, and have trunk diameters exceeding Description and Ecology three feet (Figure 2). This evergreen conifer has distinctive sharp-pointed, tough, scale-like needles (Figure 3). The dark green needles are triangular in shape and about 1 to 2.5 inches long. Needles persist for up to 15 years and cover all plant parts on young trees. -

Abstract: This study is part of the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina, conceived to evaluate forest resources, species composition and structure of forest remnants, providing information to update forest conservation and land use policy in Southern Brazilian State of Santa Catarina (95 000km²). In accordance to the Brazilian National Forest Inventory (IFN-BR), the inventory applies systematic sampling, with 440 clusters containing four crosswise 1 000m² plots (20x50m) each, located on a 10x10km grid overlaid to land use map based on classification of SPOT-4 images from 2005. Within the sample units, all woody individuals of the main stratum (DBH≥10cm) are measured and collected (fertile and sterile), if not undoubtedly identified in field. Regeneration stratum (height>1.50m; DBH<10cm) is registered in 100m² in each sample unit. Floristic sampling includes collection of all fertile trees, shrubs and herbs within the sample unit and in its surroundings. -

Jeremy Minns‘ Site Notes ACRE In 1999 I spent three weeks at the Reserva Extrativista do Alto Juruá, a reserve on the Rio Juruá near the border with Peru. The original inhabitants are allowed to farm and hunt for their own use and the forest and wild life is practically intact. Access is by light aircraft or boat only and one needs to mount an expedition to penetrate the region as there are no roads or shops. Birding is magnificent – we had almost 400 species. Many of these however can be seen more easily in Peru at Manu. Permission to enter the reserve must be obtained from IBAMA and the Rubber Tappers‘ Union in Cruzeiro do Sul. I know there is plenty of forest with good birding accessible by car from Cruzeiro do Sul but I have had no personal experience with this. ALAGOAS Murici The best but most expensive place to stay is the Quilombo Parque hotel in União dos Palmares. It is pleasantly situated with plenty of birds in the grounds, including Seven- colored tanager Tangara fastuosa. It takes at least 50 minutes to get to the reserve from the hotel. The road to the IBAMA reserve, near Fazenda Bananeiras, is very bad and you will need four-wheel drive if there has been any rain. Take a dirt road to the right off the BR-104 (signposted Fazenda Serra Nova), 700m north of the entrance to Murici. The way is complicated, with many tracks to the right and left. Keep to the ―main‖ road. At a T junction with another ―main‖ dirt road, turn left. -
Three Jays Planting on Three Continents
THREE JAYS PLANTING ON THREE CONTINENTS While it is exciting to learn about the different animals, weather and seasons of the other hemisphere, it can also be quite comforting for children to learn of the similarities. When it comes to the raucous, bounding jay, there are many. The Blue Jay of North America (below) is a generic term for at least five species (Cyanocitta), all of which have extensive blue colouring. The Jay of Europe (Garrulus glandarius) , shown below, has just a tiny patch of blue, as if his cousins across the Atlantic had sent him a handkerchief of theirs. The Azure Jay (Cyanocorax caeruleus) of South America's Atlantic Rainforest (below) is like a regal relative with a deep blue cloak and a black hood. All are members of the crow family and it shows in their personalities. All are so well known for their habit of hiding seeds that they have become almost symbolic for it in each region. In late summer and early autumn when seeds from the great trees are falling, the jays on all three continents are greedy about trying to find as many seeds as possible to store. They hide them in logs, under leaves, in the earth, in anticipation of the lean times to come during the winter. Some they find later and eat; some they do not. Those they do not find often germinate and grow into trees. To people observing them, it seems as if they are intentionally planting the seeds and many stories about them doing so are told. In a time when forests are disappearing, reforestation has taken on urgency and almost a sacredness. -

Bird Conservation International (2012) 22:205–212. © BirdLife International, 2012 doi:10.1017/S0959270911000529 The Azure Jay may reproduce in plantations of Araucaria angustifolia in southern Brazil ANDREA LARISSA BOESING and LUIZ DOS ANJOS Summary We undertook field observations of the Azure Jay Cyanocorax caeruleus in Araucaria plantations and a secondary forest in southern Brazil from 2007 to 2010. During the breeding season, the territory and the flock sizes in Araucaria plantations (31.6–42.2 ha; 2–3 individuals) seemed to be smaller than in the secondary forest (64.5–72.6 ha; 5–6 individuals). One active nest was monitored in October–November 2009 and indicated cooperative breeding by the Azure Jay, as for the majority of American jays. The fact that reproduction was documented in Araucaria plantations may be positive for the conservation of this species, since natural areas of mixed rainforest are becoming increasingly scarce. Introduction The Azure Jay Cyanocorax caeruleus is the most endangered of the South American species in the Cyanocorax genus, and is classified as ‘Near Threatened’ (BirdLife International 2008). Field observations have suggested that this species is undergoing a substantial decline in numbers, particularly in western areas of its range, where mixed rainforest (a type of southern temperate forest) occurs (Ridgely and Tudor 1989, Stotz et al. 1996, BirdLife International 2000). The Azure Jay population decline is probably caused by the fragmentation and degradation of this forest type (Anjos 1991). The conifer Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze is classified as ‘Critically Endangered’ (IUCN 2010) and comprises around 40% of the trees in mixed rainforest, with the result that the canopy is almost exclusively composed of this species (Schäffer and Prochnow 2002).
