ABC0000011216 Air Cadet March Book White Cliff of Dover During the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe gaged several air strikes against numerous targets in Great Britain. Their normal flight path took them over the white cliffs of Dover. This song was meant as encouragement for the British in their darkest moments in the Battle of Britain, giving them hope of seeing Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover instead of the Luftwaffe. Of particular interest is the line "Jimmy will go to sleep in his own room again..". It meant little Jimmy, who slept outside in an air raid shelter most of the time, might get to sleep in his own room again when the war was over. Interestingly enough, the air raid shelter Jimmy slept in was destroyed by a direct hit one morning, but for some reason Jimmy and his!f_amily had decided to sleep in the house that night and nobody was hurt. There'll be bluebirds over, The white cliffs of Dover, Tomorrow, just you wait and see. There'll be love and laughter, And peace ever after, Tomorrow, when the world is free. The shepherd will tend his sheep, The valley will bloom again, And Jimmy will go to sleep in his own little room again. There'll be bluebirds over, The white cliffs of Dover, Tomorrow, just you wait and see.
