Trail & Landscape was first published in 1967. Twenty years ago, Bill Gummer thought it would be nice to capture all the information from those 100 issues and place them into a single index to be used as a single, easy reference. That index proved to be a hit which is still used by Club members today. A couple of years ago, the idea of generating another 20-year index was brought to Council. This index is a product of that idea.

This index has adopted a similar format, but varies slightly in style. The original three indices (Subject, Author, and Review Papers) are present and a new one, Species Lists, has been added to be used as a quick reference. Hopefully this volume has maintained the same high standard.

Subject Index This index has been divided into 24 sections. These sections reflect what was used in the previous index and in subsequent 5-year indices. Articles dealing with more than one subject have been indexed multiple times within and between sections. In general, sections are arranged alphabetically, but in instances where a chronological arrangement made more sense, that section was arranged as such and noted in the heading.

The format of the index is structured such that the sections are BOLD CAPITALS, subsections are Bold with initial capitals, and article titles generally have initial capitals. Sometimes a title in the Table of Contents in an issue is not the same as it appears at the beginning of the article. If there is a discrepancy, it is the title that appears on the article that is used.

If the exact title appears multiple times throughout several issues or volumes, then the title appears once and the references are strung together in a series with the volume (and issue) numbers as well as the year. If there are multiples occurring within the same volume, the volume number has been dropped, but the issue number and year remains.

Not everything has been included; the coming events, announcements giving time and date for an event, and requests for volunteers have been excluded. Notes considered editorial are identified as such after the title in square brackets. Within titles curved parentheses are used.

2 The ILLUSTRATORS section was introduced in one of the later 5-year indices, and is continued in this index. It lists everyone who has contributed photographs and original artwork. Unless stated otherwise, illustrations associated with a single authored article are attributed to that author, multi-authored items are attributed to each of the authors. In cases where it is no indication who the author is, the illustrations are considered Anonymous.

Author Index Each author is listed alphabetically with the publications chronological within. This index followed the convention of the first index for multi-authored articles: the use of “and” following the first name indicates that the citation is as it appears in the original article; the use of “with” following the first name indicates that the person is not the senior author whose name appears second.

For example in the citation:

Hanrahan, Christine and Sandy Garland. Fletcher Wildlife Garden Events. 30(2):49(1996)

Hanrahan was the senior author and the citation depicts how it appeared in the original article. Since Garland was the second author, her citation would be:

Garland, Sandy with Christine Hanrahan. Fletcher Wildlife Garden Events. 30(2):49(1996)

Articles with no official author are always a problem. In this index, the convention used was to place the citation under the name of the author (if known but not cited), under the committee/organization (when known), or under Anonymous.

The SPECIES LISTS section, which may be used as a quick reference, specifically identifies lists or tables in articles. The pages herein include only the lists and not the entire article. This section does not include plants or animals that may be mentioned in articles.

Acknowledgments This index has been a group effort. Publications Committee members should be commended for their input; however, I would like to give special thanks to Luke Periard for compiling the author index, and to Joyce Reddoch, Ron Bedford, and Luke Periard for their invaluable help with the cross referencing and proofreading.
