Usually the contest or game is between two sides, each attempting to exceed the other. Some sports allow a tie game; others provide tie-breaking methods, to ensure one winner and one loser. A number of such two-sided contests may be arranged in a tournament producing a champion. Many sports leagues make an annual champion by arranging games in a regular sports season, followed in some cases by playoffs. Hundreds of sports exist, from those between single contestants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals. In certain sports such as racing, many contestants may compete, each against all with one winner. This is a list of ball games which are popular games or sports involving some type of ball. These ball games can be grouped by the general objective of the game, sometimes indicating a common origin either of a game itself or of its basic idea. If there are a group of games that are very similar and have a common reference, they will be grouped under this main name as for instance bowling, football and hockey. Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet (3.048 m) high mounted to a backboard at each end. Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports. A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket during regular play. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, the ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it while walking or running or throwing it to a teammate. Many techniques for shooting, passing, dribbling and rebounding, basketball teams generally have player positions and offensive and defensive structures (player positioning). Traditionally, the tallest and strongest members of a team are called a center or power forward, while slightly shorter and more agile players are called small forward, and the shortest players or those who possess the best ball handling skills are called a point guard or shooting guard. Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court 40 by 20 meters, with a goal in the center of each end. The goals are surrounded by a 6-meter zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; the goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "jumping" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handball and Czech handball (which were more common in the past). The game is quite fast and includes body contact, as the defenders try to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. w w w . l i i r j . o r g ISSN 2277-727X Page 9 Lokavishkar International E-Journal, ISSN 2277-727X, Vol-04, Issue- 03, July-Aug-Sept 2015 Methodology Sixty male players were randomly selected from various teams, with due permission from their respected manager and coaches to become as subjects for this study, who are participating in basketball and handball intercollegiate tournament of H.N.B.G.U., Srinagar Garhwal. Thirty subjects from each basketball and handball respectively were selected for this study, the subject were selected on the basis that they have at least played one match of intercollegiate tournament during the session 2014-15. The independent variable that is vital capacity was selected for the study; vital capacity was recorded with the help of dry spirometer in liters during the respected intercollegiate tournament that basketball and handball. The data for this study was collected during intercollegiate tournament of H.N.B.G.U. To compare vital capacity between basketball and handball players, the independent ‘t’-test was used and level of significance was set at 0.05. Result To analyze and interpret the data collected for reaching at some conclusion, Independent ‘t’ test was applied at 0.05 level of significance in finding out the vital capacity between basketball and handball players Table no. 1 Comparison of vital capacity between basketball and handball players Group Mean Standard Standard Mean t-value Deviation Error Difference Basketball 3.86 0.36 0.101 0.41 4.0596 * Handball 0.42 4.27 * Significant at 0.05 level,‘t’ (df=58) =1.672 Table no.1 shows that there is significant difference between basketball and handball players as the calculated‘t’ value i.e. 4.0596 greater than tabulated t value i.e. 1.672 at 0.05 level of significance. w w w . l i i r j . o r g ISSN 2277-727X Page 10 Lokavishkar International E -Journal, ISSN 2277 -727X, Vol -04, Issue - 03, July-Aug -Sept 2015 Graphical representation of means of basketball and handball Players has been presented in figure -1 4.5 4 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 Basketball Handball Fig.no.1: Mean Value of Vital Capacity between basketball and handball players Discussion of finding and conclusion s Findings of th is study show that there was a significant difference in the vital capacity, positive between basketball and handball players . The handball players have better vital capacity than basketball players. This may be attribute to the nature of selected games dema nds a high degree of endurance capacity in handball game as compare to basketball as the game of handball is of 30 minute (each half), whereas the basketball game is of 10 minute (each quarter) , the handball player run more without having rest in between, during four quarters a basketball player get time to recover and catch up his breath and respiratory system plays a vital role in endurance dominating sports. Vital capacity is important for handball game in comparison to basketball becau se the greater vital capacity means greater capacity of individual to inhale air into lungs as well as efficiency of exhale. As per nature of the game this is well known fact that handball playing area is bigger than basketball, both the game do requires d ifferent kind of lungs capacity to perform various movements in their respective game .
