The occurrence of the invasive apple snail Pomacea canaliculata in Indonesia was first reported in 1984. The species was introduced as an ornamental aquarium pet. Since then, people have begun to culture the snail in ponds usually adjacent to rice fields. When it was realized that the species multiplied rapidly and was a serious pest, this invasive apple snail had already spread widely. There are many cultural methods of controlling and preventing its distribution, but none are effective in keeping them at non-damaging levels. We mapped the distribution of P. canaliculata in Indonesia from the MZB’s collections as well as literature references and found that the snail invaded almost all large islands, such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and West Papua. We also studied the impact of P. canaliculata on the native apple snails P. ampullacea, P. scutata, and P. virescens in Lake Rawa Pening (a popular tourism destination) as a case study. The results showed that two species of Pila already disappeared from Lake Rawa Pening. Only P. scutata occurs still in the region and was found alive usually in shallow water and rice fields surrounding the lake. -

Distribution ntroduced from South America into the southern United States, East Asia, islands of the ndian Ocean and New Guinea. Notes This pest species has not as yet entered Australia, but ought to be considered a significant risk due to its presence as an invasive in the adjacent ndo-west Pacific region. Two other south Asian ampullariid species have regularly been intercepted by Australian Biosecurity ĕ they are Pila ampullacea (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pila globosa (Swainson, 1822). -

Email: [email protected], fbrusa@ fcnym.unlp.edu.ar, [email protected] Abstract This contribution summarizes knowledge of organisms associated with apple snails, mainly Pomacea spp., either in a facultative or obligate manner, paying special attention to diseases transmitted via these snails to humans. A wide spectrum of epibionts on the shell and operculum of snails are discussed. Among them algae, ciliates, rotifers, nematodes, flatworms, oligochaetes, dipterans, bryozoans and leeches are facultative, benefitting from the provision of substrate, transport, access to food and protection. Among obligate symbionts, five turbellarian species of the genusTemnocephala are known from the branchial cavity, with T. iheringi the most common and abundant. The leech Helobdella ampullariae also spends its entire life cycle inside the branchial cavity; two copepod species and one mite are found in different sites inside the snails. Details of the nature of the relationships of these specific obligate symbionts are poorly known. Also, extensive studies of an intracellular endosymbiosis are summarized. Apple snails are the first or second hosts of several digenean species, including some bird parasites.A number of human diseases are transmitted by apple snails, angiostrongyliasis being the most important because of the potential seriousness of the disease. Among gastropods, apple snails (family Ampullariidae) are globally distributed in tropical and subtropical freshwater ecosystems and many species are ecologically and economically important. Ampullariids exhibit various morphological and physiological adaptations to their respective habitats, which make them ideal candidates for studying adaptation, population divergence, speciation, and larger-scale patterns of diversity, including the biogeography of native and invasive populations. The limited availability of genomic data, however, hinders in-depth ecological and evolutionary studies of these non-model organisms. Results: Using Illumina Hiseq platforms, we sequenced 1220 million reads for seven species of apple snails. Together with the previously published RNA-Seq data of two apple snails, we conducted de novo transcriptome assembly of eight species that belong to five genera of Ampullariidae, two of which represent Old World lineages and the other three New World lineages. There were 20,730 to 35,828 unigenes with predicted open reading frames for the eight species, with N50 (shortest sequence length at 50% of the unigenes) ranging from 1320 to 1803 bp. 69.7% to 80.2% of these unigenes were functionally annotated by searching against NCBI’s non-redundant, Gene Ontology database and the Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes. -

Based on molecular analyses and shell morphology, two species of Pomacea (P. canaliculata and P. maculata) have been found. The introduction of Pomacea to Singapore was probably accidental via the aquarium trade. Their current status and distribution in Singapore are summarised herein. In highly urbanised Singapore, the species have not caused obvious environmental damage, in contrast to the agricultural damage they have caused in rice plantations throughout neighbouring Southeast Asian countries. Nevertheless, the introduced Pomacea are now widespread throughout the island city-state, and may be competing with the native Southeast Asian ampullariid, Pila scutata, which has declined since the arrival of Pomacea. Other potential impacts of Pomacea spp. in Singapore include modification of wetland habitat and acting as vectors of human disease. Some measures to remove Pomacea in localised areas have been initiated. However, eradication of these introduced apple snails appears difficult, if not impossible. Faruque Miah [1*] 1Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh ABSTRACT This study was carried out for molecular identification and genetic diversity of freshwater snail Pila globosa in Bangladesh. Traditional taxonomy of different species of the genus Pila has always been obscured and unreliable due to their morphological ambiguity. A rapid and cost effective molecular marker, mitochondrial COI gene was used to establish molecular standards for identification while similar bands were seen in all individuals of Pila globosa at the level of 700 bp of lengths. In addition, genetic diversity of freshwater snail Pila globosa was measured on the basis of PCR- RAPD assay. Three arbitrary primers were screened and 12 polymorphic loci were found in 7 individuals of this experimental species. The percentage of average values of polymorphic loci and polymorphism information content found 21.23 and 0.875 respectively. Highest and lowest Nei genetic similarity was found 0.500 and 0.105 respectively whereas genetic distance was recorded between 0.667 and 0.9444. Furthermore, the highest and lowest linkage distance was observed 17.0 and 9.0 respectively. A distant relationship among individuals was found by studying phylogenetic dendrogram. -
