The molecular phylogeny based on the combined dataset indicates that Margarya is polyphyletic, as two of the three well-supported clades containing species of Margarya also comprise species from other viviparid genera. In one clade, sequences of four species of Margarya even cluster indiscriminately with those of two species of Cipangopaludina, indi- cating that the current state of Asian viviparid taxonomy needs to be revised. Additionally, these data suggest that shell evolution in viviparids is complex, as even the large and strongly sculptured shells of Margarya, which are outstanding among Asian viviparids, can apparently be easily converted to simple smooth shells. -

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Terrestrial and aquatic gastropods from the sparse non-marine fossil record of the Eocene in the Tethys upper Eocene (Priabonian) Zalumah Formation in the region. The occurrence of the genera Lanistes, Pila, and Salalah region of the Sultanate of Oman are described. The Gulella along with some pomatiids, probably related to assemblages reflect the composition of the continental extant genera, suggests that the modern African–Arabian mollusc fauna of the Palaeogene of Arabia, which, at that continental faunas can be partly traced back to Eocene time, formed parts of the southeastern Tethys coast. The widely distributed Schistosoma mansoni that causes intestinal schistosomiasis represents a great threat. Its world-wide distribution is permitted by the broad geographic range of the susceptible species of its intermediate host, Biomphalaria, which serves as an obligatory host for the larval stage, at which humans get infected. -

Suterilla fluviatilis Fukuda, Ponder & Marshall, 2006 Diagnostic features Shell globose to ovate-conic, up to 1.9 mm in length, thick, opaque, uniformly yellow-brown (white in some specimens); with narrow, open umbilicus. Teleoconch whorls convex, suture distinctly Distribution of Suterilla fluviatilis. Suterilla fluviatilis (adult size 1.6-1.9 mm) impressed; spire about equal to aperture in length; whorls smooth except for fine growth lines, fine spiral striae present or absent; aperture with thin outer lip and thick, wide columellar lip, inner lip thin across parietal area; aperture not extending across umbilicus; no varix. Operculum simple, pyriform , paucispiral, horny, translucent, yellowish. Head with short, narrow, cephalic tentacles approximately equal to half width of head with the eyes situated near central part of bases of these tentacles. A distinct transverse crease at posterior end of snout and confluent with anterior edges of tentacle bases. Omniphoric grooves distinct. Anterior pedal mucous gland along entire edge of foot, as many small, slender cells opening beneath inconspicuous propodial flap. Foot short and broad, sole slender, flat, smooth when foot extended. Mantle cavity with only two rudimentary gill filaments. The main differences between S. fluviatilis and other species of Suterilla (all of which are marine) are anatomical. They include the S-shaped rectum, lack of a flange on the penis, the albumen gland being markedly shorter than the capsule gland, a large bursa copulatrix (also in S. neozelanica) and a wide, folded bursal duct that enters the bursa mid anteriorly. Distribution ntroduced from South America into the southern United States, East Asia, islands of the ndian Ocean and New Guinea. Notes This pest species has not as yet entered Australia, but ought to be considered a significant risk due to its presence as an invasive in the adjacent ndo-west Pacific region. Two other south Asian ampullariid species have regularly been intercepted by Australian Biosecurity ĕ they are Pila ampullacea (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pila globosa (Swainson, 1822). -

BLAIR Director of Medical Services, Health Department of Southern Rhodesia, Salisbury WHO Consultant on Bilharziasis SYNOPSIS The author, in his capacity as a WHO consultant, undertook a survey of bilharziasis in British West and East Africa and Nyasaland during 1950-51. The information thus obtained has been revised and brought up to date and is recorded in the present article together with similar observations on Northern Rhodesia, which was not visited, and on Southern Rhodesia, the author's own country. In Part I, each country is dealt with in turn. The history of the disease and the findings of field surveys are reviewed, and, wherever possible, personal observations have been included. The fact that the informa- tion is of a scanty and incomplete nature is an indication that further local studies in all areas are badly needed. In Part II an attempt is made to survey the situation from the point of view of the various aspects of the subjects-methods of obtaining morbidity data, intensity of infection, effects of the disease on human health, treat- ment, and the molluscan vectors. PART I. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA The Joint OIHP/WHO Study Group on Bilharziasis in Africa, meeting in Cairo in October 1949, recommended that the " surveys on the geographical distribution of human bilharziasis and its vector snails should be carried out by individual experts to be selected and sent by WHO to the countries and territories in which the presence of bilharziasis is known or suspected, but for which adequate information is not available." A study of the Atlantic – and Mediterranean marine species of the genera Assiminea and Paludinella revealed several new species. The species Assiminea gittenbergeri spec. nov. is estab- lished in the Mediterranean. Assiminea avilai spec. nov. and Assiminea rolani spec. nov. have been found in Terceira, Azores and in Madeira respectively. A species from the Atlantic coast of France, cited as Assiminea eliae Paladilhe, 1875 by Thiele, is described as Paludinella glaubrechti spec. nov. A. eliae cannot be identified today as no type material is known. The name , howev- er, is used for several different species as documented herein. Assiminea ostiorum (Bavay, 1920) is here considered a species in its own right. Paludinella sicana ( Brugnone, 1876), until now con- sidered an exclusively Mediterranean species, has been detected along the Atlantic coast at Laredo ( Spain) in the north as well as at Agadir ( Morocco) in the south. Adams, 1856 are a group of mollusks living worldwide in brackish water, in freshwater as well as terrestrial habitats. In Europe there are only a few species known. They live in usually more or less brackish conditions high in the tidal zone, frequently along tidal mudflats. The two genera recognized to date are Paludinella Pfeiffer, 1841 with Paludinella littorina (Delle Chiaje, 1828) and Paludinella sicana (Brugnone, 1876) and the type-genus Assiminea Leach in Fleming, 1828, with the type- species Assiminea grayana (Fleming, 1828) as well as Assiminea eliae Paladilhe, 1875. -

The species has previously been known only as a Pliocene fossil, but now is recognized in the Quaternary of the southwest United States, and living in the Pecos Valley of New Mexico. Pecosorbis is unusual because of its restricted distribution and habitat in seasonal rock pools. Most similar to Menetus, it differs in having a preputial organ with an external duct, no spermatheca, and a penial sac that is mostly eversible. -

Email: [email protected], fbrusa@ fcnym.unlp.edu.ar, [email protected] Abstract This contribution summarizes knowledge of organisms associated with apple snails, mainly Pomacea spp., either in a facultative or obligate manner, paying special attention to diseases transmitted via these snails to humans. A wide spectrum of epibionts on the shell and operculum of snails are discussed. Among them algae, ciliates, rotifers, nematodes, flatworms, oligochaetes, dipterans, bryozoans and leeches are facultative, benefitting from the provision of substrate, transport, access to food and protection. Among obligate symbionts, five turbellarian species of the genusTemnocephala are known from the branchial cavity, with T. iheringi the most common and abundant. The leech Helobdella ampullariae also spends its entire life cycle inside the branchial cavity; two copepod species and one mite are found in different sites inside the snails. Details of the nature of the relationships of these specific obligate symbionts are poorly known. Also, extensive studies of an intracellular endosymbiosis are summarized. Apple snails are the first or second hosts of several digenean species, including some bird parasites.A number of human diseases are transmitted by apple snails, angiostrongyliasis being the most important because of the potential seriousness of the disease.
