36 JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF AFRICAN MUSIC SINGING PSALMS WITH OWLS: A VENDA 20th CENTURY MUSICAL HISTORY pART TwO: TSHIKONA, BEER SONGS AND pERSONAL SONGS by JACO KRUGER The three categories of Venda music discussed here are tshikona (the bamboo pipe dance), beer songs (malende, jive) and personal songs. As I indicate in part One of this essay,1 tshikona is useful for the construction of a musical history because its performance is intimately associated with traditional politics. By contrast, beer songs do not feature di rectly in politics. However, they not only comprise the largest category of adult music, they also have more elaborate texts than Venda music forms such as tshikona or tshigombela. While song texts have an important function, they arguably play a secondary role in large scale performances of communal dance music such as tshigombela and tshikona, which primarily are geared towards emotional arousal through sound and movement. As the continuum of musical performance extends towards smaller groups, and finally the individual musician, performances become more reflective, and their cognitive content increases to a point where a simple accompaniment on a musical bow or guitar becomes the subservient carrier of song texts of epic proportion (see Kruger 1993:348-403). While the study of large-scale dance performance reveals general social developments, the texts of beer songs and personal songs not only uncover the detail of these develop ments but also the emotional motivations which underpin them. Tshikona Tshikona is one of a number of South African pipe dances (see Kirby 1968:135 170). These dances mostly take place under the auspices of traditional leaders, and they are associated with important social rituals. -

CLERGY’S Resistance to VENDA HOMELAND’S INDEPENDENCE IN THE 1970S and 1980S S.T. Kgatla Research Institute for Theology and Religion University of South Africa [email protected] ABSTRACT The article discusses the clergy’s role in the struggle against Venda’s “independence” in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as resistance to the apartheid policy of “separate development” for Venda. It also explores the policy of indirect white rule through the replacement of real community leaders with incompetent, easily manipulated traditional chiefs. The imposition of the system triggered resistance among the youth and the churches, which led to bloody reprisals by the authorities. Countless were detained under apartheid laws permitting detention without trial for 90 days. Many died in detention, but those responsible were acquitted by the courts of law in the Homeland. The article highlights the contributions of the Black Consciousness Movement, the Black People Conversion Movement, and the Student Christian Movement. The Venda student uprising was second in magnitude only to the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976. The torture of ministers in detention and the response by church leaders locally and internationally, are discussed. The authorities attempted to divide the Lutheran Church and nationalise the Lutherans in Venda, but this move was thwarted. venda was officially re-incorporated into South Africa on 27 April 1994. Together Budget Speech 2015/16 Almost eight months ago, I stood before this august house DEPARTMENT OF to deliver Budget Vote 12 of the Department of SocialSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Development, at the dawn of a new era for the Department and the Province. Today we are proud to report on the delivery of our mandate. While we have made great strides our efforts to ensure a better life for all will continue unabated. This budget seeks to respond to the socio-economic challenges as enshrined in the National Development Plan (NDP) vision 2030. It is geared towards positively impacting on the social welfare of the citizens of Limpopo, by contributing to the creation of much needed jobs and restoration of the dignity of all our people, regardless of race, gender, age or physical and mental abilities. Allow me to note with sadness that we are gathering here in a time when we are still mourning our fallen comrades and compatriots - the late Minister Collins Chabane, MEC Thembi Nwedamutshwu and Ntate Nelson Diale. -
Background of the Study Area
Chapter 4 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY AREA 4.1 INTRODUCTION In order to understand the factors and circumstances that determine the decision to adopt a new technology, it is important to get a general and integrated overview of the area in which the dependent and the explanatory variables are tested. Both Old and New Qwaqwa are mainly livestock producing areas. To ensure a sustainable livestock production system, the use of veterinary surgeon services and a correct use of medication technologies are essential to the small ruminant farmer (Naude, 1998). The non-adoption of medication technologies usually results in poor reproduction levels and high mortality rates (Schwalbach, 1998). It is therefore important to take a look at the natural resources available to the small ruminant farmers and to evaluate the effect of the quality of these resources on herd health. The intention with this chapter is to give a short historical as well as a geographical background on Qwaqwa. This will be followed by a brief discussion of the land tenure systems, as well as an overview of the agricultural potential, infrastructure and level of institutions in Qwaqwa. In the forth section the diffusion programmes used in the past with regard to the transfer of small ruminant veterinary and medication technologies will be discussed. Background of the study area 70 4.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF QWAQWA According to the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA, 1985) Old Qwaqwa was previously known as Witsieshoek and Basuto-Barborwa and was occupied by two tribes, namely the Bakwena Tribe (1867) and the Batlokwa Tribe (1873). -

Being Inclusive to Survive in an Ethnic Conflict : The Meaning of ‘Basotho’ for Illegal Squatters in Thaba Nchu, 1970s Sayaka Kono University of the Free State, South Africa Tsuda College, Japan Abstract The apartheid regime’s attempt at ‘ethnic division’ practiced through its Bantustan policy caused conflicts in South Africa. A squatter area called Kromdraai became the center of such a conflict between ‘Basotho’ and ‘Batswana’. This paper studies why and how those ex-Kromdraai residents started to claim that they were ‘Basotho’. Firstly, it will discuss the political and economic situation in which the conflict occurred. Secondly, it will argue how politicians of Qwaqwa, a Bantustan for ‘Basotho’, attempted to mobilize people in forming their identity, and why Kromdraai residents got involved in its politics as ‘Basotho’. Thirdly, using oral testimonies, it will reveal the meaning of identifying oneself as ‘Basotho’ for Kromdraai residents. Finally, it will conclude that Kromdraai residents interpreted the word Basotho as being inclusive, not to be ‘ethnically’ exclusive as ‘Batswana’, but at the same time to secure help from Sotho Bantustan, Qwaqwa. Introduction Nation-building has been one of the significant challenges in post-apartheid South Africa. Under the slogan ‘One Nation, Many Cultures’, it places ethnicity as signifying simply cultural difference, and praises the diversity of the ‘Rainbow Nation’. This tendency regarding ethnicity in South Africa today is an attempt to overcome the history of divide and rule. Yet, looking back at how ethnicity was fostered under the apartheid system, it might also mean dismissing the history of the people who had struggled subjectively to solve the problems under the layered structure of the oppression. -

Critical trade-offs will likely become more apparent in 2020: though government is unwilling to consider meaningful job cuts at, or direct privatisation of, Eskom, it is nonetheless pushing forward with the utility’s unbundling and is evidently intent on supporting the deregulation of the energy sector, thus enabling far stronger private sector participation in electricity generation in order to alleviate the damaging effects of load-shedding on growth and confidence.
