An Ethnographic Analysis Among Small Farmers in NW Italy
Article Modes and Forms of Knowledge of Farming Entrepreneurship: An Ethnographic Analysis among Small Farmers in NW Italy Michele Filippo Fontefrancesco 1,2 1 University of Gastronomic Sciences, 12042 Bra, Italy; [email protected] 2 Department of Anthropology, Durham University, Durham DH1 3LE, UK Abstract: This article investigates the modes and forms of knowledge underpinning farming en- trepreneurship through an ethnographic case study of Alessandria province in NW Italy. It shows that farming entrepreneurs base their decisions on explicit and implicit knowledge encompassing forms of knowledge linked to the environment where they live, their trade, the characteristics of their firms, issues concerning their family and private life, and even the emotions linked with their surroundings. All these forms of knowledge inform their vision of their future and guide them in their choices in terms of investments and crop selection. Accordingly, the article argues that farming entrepreneurship is embedded in the locale. Keywords: rural development; entrepreneurship; economic anthropology; ethnography; Italy 1. We relocate the event to the basin separating Chios and Lesvos, and confirm a normal faulting mechanism tive catalog. This magnitude makes it the second generally comparable to that of the recent Lesvos earthquake largest instrumentally recorded historical earthquake located at the Northern end of that basin. The seismic moment 26 in the Central Aegean Sea after the 1956 Amorgos obtained from mantle surface waves, M0 ¼ 7 Â 10 dyn cm, makes it second only to the 1956 Amorgos earthquake. New Entry: Our Timorasso First Vintage
NEW ENTRY: OUR TIMORASSO FIRST VINTAGE 2018 was the first vintage of our Timorasso Derthona. “We fell in love with this wine as soon as we first tasted it in the 1990s. It immediately evoked moving memories associated with the reminiscences of my father, Alfredo Currado who, in the late 1960s, began his wine-producing journey with Arneis, at the time a still widely unknown native Piedmontese white varietal.” (cit. Elena e Luca Currado Vietti). What is the Timorasso grape? It is an ancient native white berry vine grown in the Tortonese area since the Middle Ages. It is a dense and compact cluster variety, with high fertility, abundant vegetation and rather early maturation. The municipality of reference is Tortona, called Derthona by the ancient Romans (in the province of Alessandria). Although small compared to the Langhe and Monferrato, this area is becoming, from a wine point of view, one of the most interesting areas of Piemonte. "Derthona" today is not only a historical re-enactment, but wants to be the symbol of a territory, a wine, a vine. People have been working long for Derthona to become a brand of Piemonte: an expression of a strong wine-terroir bond, just like the one acclaimed between Barolo, Barbaresco and the Langa. The Timorasso- Derthona combination will represent a territory of no more than 300 Ha in total. Timorasso is a bizarre and precious vine that, despite its ancient origins, has been in danger of disappearing. Today, however, thanks to the intuition and foresight of some winemakers like Walter Massa, this native vine has come to us. -
