  • “Paul Robert Burton Band”
“PAUL ROBERT BURTON BAND” The “Paul Robert Burton Band” is a musical collaboration, presenting to the public an expanding ensemble of world-class virtuoso musicians from an infinitely wide variety of musical styles and genres. Every player is unique, however they all have something very much in common, commitment and dedication to the Arts. Music can transport the soul to higher realms and these musicians together invoke that feeling. “ We can easily say that Paul Robert Burton and his band were the standout act at this year’s Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival. Where ever he played and in whatever venue (café, outdoor concert, club) or line up (from solo to full on band) the crowds were huge, bopping and excited. Venues were full to capacity and then some! During a sidewalk café appearance, the crowds spilled onto the street & stopped traffic! Apart from his musical gifts, Paul was appreciated by festival management as a source of information regarding other artists, and brought great energy, inspiration and spirit to our Festival. People raved for weeks afterwards, and purchased Paul’s CD’s aplenty, and we have had considerable requests since the festival as to where & when Paul might play again. ” Ross Eggleton, Festival Director Eevi Stein, Festival Coordinator & Publicity Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival April 1- 3 2011 PAUL ROBERT BURTON (Songwriter, Producer, Sound Engineer, Upright Bass, Foot Drums, Guitarlele, Harmonicas, Ocarinas and Vocals) www.paulrobertburton.com www.reverbnation.com/paulrobertburton www.youtube.com/paulrobertburton Paul Robert Burton is a Multi-tasking, Multi-instrumentalist, Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Sound Engineer. • “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.

  • Announcing Ziggy, the Songs of David Bowie
17 September 2010 ANNOUNCING ZIGGY, THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE If there’s one pop artist that multiple generations can relate to its David Bowie. There’s always a tinge of nostalgia listening to Bowie’s mellifluous tones whether it is listening to the Man Who Fell To Earth, Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane or of course The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, which signified his ‘comeback’ in 1972 after a brief lull in his pop career. ZIGGY, THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE pays homage to Bowie, the pop phenomenon - the influential individualist with the uncanny ability to push boundaries and transform himself and the world around him. Performed by four of Australia’s leading contemporary musicians and performers - iOTA, Jeff Duff, Steve Balbi and Brydon Stace - Ziggy, the Songs of David Bowie is as multi-dimensional as the man himself. One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, David Bowie has been described as the creator of some of the most innovative popular music of our times. He has set trends and exemplified his times more than any other artist as rock star, movie star, Broadway star, and sex symbol...but, it is his amazing music that really sets him apart from all other artists. Ever since his break-through single of 1969, Space Oddity, Bowie has pushed the boundaries of popular music in all directions. His legendary 1972 album The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust brought a fresh new theatricality to the rock world. Forty years on Bowie's work remains both revered, and even more influential … for Bowie, the seventies was the beginning of the twenty-first century - he has always been ahead of his time!
