EDITION #20 – September 2008 SPECIAL "SHADOZ" ISSUE!! "Shadoz 2008" marked our 6th anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of Cliff and The Shadows. Yet another new venue, and, from all reports the best yet. On a sad note, we recently lost one of our Shadoz friends, Don Hill. Don played drums for Harry's Webb and The Vikings last year, and was one of the 'stalwarts' of Shadoz in recent times. R.I.P. Don. TONY KIEK (Keyboards) and GEORGE LEWIS (Guitar) were fresh from a tour of the UK, where they appeared at a number of Shadows clubs. They were gracious enough to help out by filling the 'dreaded' opening spot. Their set was a wonderful introduction to the day, and they featured some great sounds with WONDERFUL LAND / FANDANGO (with WALTZING MATILDA intro) / DANCES WITH WOLVES / THING-ME-JIG / RODRIGO'S CONCERTO / GOING HOME (THEME FROM 'LOCAL HERO') / THE SAVAGE / SPRING IS NEARLY HERE Whilst Tony and George travelled down from Sydney, no less a feat were the next band, who have travelled from overseas – Phillip Island! - ROB WATSON (Bass) was formerly with Melbourne group "The Avengers", TONY MERCER (Lead Guitar) also played with various Melbourne groups before "retiring" to the island and forming "SHAZAM", MIKE McCABE (Rhythm) worked in England in the 60's with "Hardtack", MARTY SAUNDERS (Drums) played with the popular showband "Out To Lunch" amongst others, and JEFF CULLEN (Lead vocals and rhythm guitar) sang with The Aztecs in Sydney before Billy Thorpe, then with The Rat Finks. A nice mix of Shads and non-Shads numbers included ADVENTURES IN PARADISE / MAN OF MYSTERY / ATLANTIS / THE CRUEL SEA / THE RISE AND FALL OF FLINGEL BUNT / GENIE WITH THE LIGHT BROWN LAMP / IT'S A MAN'S WORLD / THE SAVAGE / CINCINNATTI FIREBALL (voc) / LOVE POTION NO.9 (voc) / THE WANDERER (voc) / THE STRANGER / WALK DON'T RUN One of the joys of "Shadoz" is the ability to welcome newcomers to our shindig.

Over the head credits, it runs in a shortened version, with just the first verse, fading out on the line ‘for nothing at all’. Over the tail credits, it runs longer. The song was written by Greg Macainsh and performed by the Tony Catz Band. The lyrics that follow are provisional - the band’s singer screeches as much as sings, in the approved Jimmy Barnes hard rock style (that’s not a criticism, just an observation). Question marks at the end of lines indicate uncertain lyrics. Any suggested improvements welcome: (The music over the tail credits begins with a guitar-driven instrumental) A guy fakes the limits, he’s along the way (?) • “Paul Robert Burton Band”
“PAUL ROBERT BURTON BAND” The “Paul Robert Burton Band” is a musical collaboration, presenting to the public an expanding ensemble of world-class virtuoso musicians from an infinitely wide variety of musical styles and genres. Every player is unique, however they all have something very much in common, commitment and dedication to the Arts. Music can transport the soul to higher realms and these musicians together invoke that feeling. “ We can easily say that Paul Robert Burton and his band were the standout act at this year’s Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival. Where ever he played and in whatever venue (café, outdoor concert, club) or line up (from solo to full on band) the crowds were huge, bopping and excited. Venues were full to capacity and then some! During a sidewalk café appearance, the crowds spilled onto the street & stopped traffic! Apart from his musical gifts, Paul was appreciated by festival management as a source of information regarding other artists, and brought great energy, inspiration and spirit to our Festival. People raved for weeks afterwards, and purchased Paul’s CD’s aplenty, and we have had considerable requests since the festival as to where & when Paul might play again. ” Ross Eggleton, Festival Director Eevi Stein, Festival Coordinator & Publicity Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival April 1- 3 2011 PAUL ROBERT BURTON (Songwriter, Producer, Sound Engineer, Upright Bass, Foot Drums, Guitarlele, Harmonicas, Ocarinas and Vocals) www.paulrobertburton.com www.reverbnation.com/paulrobertburton www.youtube.com/paulrobertburton Paul Robert Burton is a Multi-tasking, Multi-instrumentalist, Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Sound Engineer. Beginning his career some 30 years ago as a session musician, Paul has performed with Elvis Presley’s drummer D J Fontana, James Brown’s drummer Toni Cooke and has an extensive list of musical associations with a veritable “who’s who” of the Australian Music Industry.
