Announcing Ziggy, the Songs of David Bowie 17 September 2010 ANNOUNCING ZIGGY, THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE If there’s one pop artist that multiple generations can relate to its David Bowie. There’s always a tinge of nostalgia listening to Bowie’s mellifluous tones whether it is listening to the Man Who Fell To Earth, Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane or of course The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, which signified his ‘comeback’ in 1972 after a brief lull in his pop career. ZIGGY, THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE pays homage to Bowie, the pop phenomenon - the influential individualist with the uncanny ability to push boundaries and transform himself and the world around him. Performed by four of Australia’s leading contemporary musicians and performers - iOTA, Jeff Duff, Steve Balbi and Brydon Stace - Ziggy, the Songs of David Bowie is as multi-dimensional as the man himself. One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, David Bowie has been described as the creator of some of the most innovative popular music of our times. He has set trends and exemplified his times more than any other artist as rock star, movie star, Broadway star, and sex symbol...but, it is his amazing music that really sets him apart from all other artists. Ever since his break-through single of 1969, Space Oddity, Bowie has pushed the boundaries of popular music in all directions. His legendary 1972 album The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust brought a fresh new theatricality to the rock world. Forty years on Bowie's work remains both revered, and even more influential … for Bowie, the seventies was the beginning of the twenty-first century - he has always been ahead of his time! Ziggy, The Songs Of David Bowie pays homage to Bowie and his music. The show is theatrically inspired, a musical journey into the songbook of David Bowie, starring four of the most electrifying live performers in the country today. Having recently won three awards at the Helpmann Awards for his triumph Smoke & Mirrors, and a recipient of an ARIA nomination for his musical release Hip Bone Connection, singer, songwriter and performer iOTA is at the top of the world. A fixture on the Australian rock scene in the ‘80s, Jeff Duff is renowned for creating not only great music but controversy. Multi-award winner Steve Balbi was a foundation member of Noiseworks, as well as Kevin Borich Express, Electric Hippies and Universe. And Brydon Stace has sung the spectrum from classical at the Sydney Opera House, to sessions at the Basement, with INXS in Tim Rice’s Concert Spectacular and in Grease the Arena Spectacular. Together they bring an exciting new dimension to Bowie’s music. They are joined on stage by a star studded band drawn from the ranks of Silverchair, Noiseworks, Leo Sayer and Jimmy Barnes. Ziggy, The Songs Of David Bowie offers audiences the closest experience of Bowie live, short of seeing the great man himself. From the futuristic ideology of the Ziggy Stardust album - Starman, Suffragette City, Rock'n'Roll Suicide, Ziggy Stardust; through to the anthemic choruses of Heroes, Young Americans and Let's Dance; then Under Pressure, Ashes to Ashes and headlong into the ‘80s. This journey covers the legendary Bowie albums and also includes the classic pop hits of Space Oddity, Modern Love, China Girl and Life on Mars. Ziggy, The Songs Of David Bowie is a rare opportunity to see the amazing repertoire of an amazing talent, performed by the cream of the cream of Australia’s singers and musicians. Quite simply, it’s a “Don’t Miss” concert! …cont …2 www.ziggytour.com ALL TICKETS ON SALE TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 21 Jeff Lewis & Spiritworks Present ZIGGY, THE SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE WHEN Saturday November 20, 8pm WHERE Concert Hall, QPAC, Cultural Centre, South Bank TICKETS* $89.90 - $119.90 BOOKINGS 136 246 or www.qpac.com.au *Ticket price includes GST and Booking Fee. WATCHMOJO – The life and career of David Bowie (1947-2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lan_wotkon0 [Fashion] Welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of David Bowie. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

From “Please Mr. Gravedigger,” the theatrical closing number on his 1967 self-titled debut album, to virtually every track on his final record nearly 50 years later, the protean musician mused perpetually on all matters of mortality: the loss of loved ones (“Jump They Say,” about his brother’s suicide), the apocalyptic end of the world (“Five Years”), his own impending passing.

NATO Under Pressure Abstract This article examines some of the formidable challenges and concerns of North Atlantic Treaty Organization that could influence its unity and integrity. A combination of issues that encompass military problems, internal political glitches and critical rhetoric from the President of the United States may undermine NATO’ s capacity to act in the best interest of its members. Now even more than ever before, this causes uncertainty about the future of the Alliance. Therefore, this paper opens a discussion about possible scenarios for NATO’s disintegration and how this might affect some of the smallest member states, namely, Bulgaria. Admittedly, the security and stability of Bulgaria, which has limitations in terms of national capacities and capabilities, is at risk. Without the protection of NATO, there is a high probability that the Balkans could once again jump into competition and confrontation.

  • Tribute to David Bowie
Tribute to David Bowie By Jennifer Sage The world lost a magical, mystical, playful, brilliant artist on Sunday, January 10, 2016. I woke to the sad news and immediately found myself purchasing many of his songs that I didn’t already own. David Bowie was a big part of my youth. When I was a freshman in high school, I embroidered rock-and-roll artists’ names on my jeans (yeah, that was a thing back then). David Bowie had a coveted spot on my right knee. It was 1976, and the Bump was the big dance craze at the time. Bowie’s hit song “Fame,” filled with soul, was a perfect song for the Bump. To this day, I can’t hear that song without my mind going back to Saint Augustine High School dances in San Diego. All of the songs in my playlist were performed by David Bowie except one, “Lust for Life,” but he co-wrote it with Iggy Pop. The only other time I have done a profile tribute to a band or artist using solely their music was with REM, and that was to celebrate their retirement, not a death. Even after we lost such great artists as Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston, I could only bring myself to play a handful of their songs. There are many covers, remixes, and mashups of David Bowie songs that you could incorporate in your tribute playlist, as well as duets and other artists of his era, so you don’t have to play just Bowie songs. But before you dismiss the idea, remember that David Bowie’s art not only spanned decades, he also spanned many genres and styles.

This book spill off the page in all directions, kaleidoscope of vistas, medley of tunes and street noises […]” William Burroughs, The Naked Lunch, 1959. Introduction 1 The urban landscape occupies a specific position in Bowie’s works. His lyrics are fraught with references to “city landscape[s]”5 and urban nightscapes. The metropolis provides not only the object of a diegetic and spectatorial gaze but it also enables the author to further a discourse on his own inner fragmented self as the nexus, lyrics— music—city, offers an extremely rich avenue for investigating and addressing key issues such as alienation, loneliness, nostalgia and death in a postmodern cultural context.
