Thus, in the perception of literary historians, it is often reduced to a marginal phenomenon, that draws its force solely from its powers of receptivity and imitation. Yet, as Philip Sidney writes in his Apology for Poetry, imitation can be transformed into creative appropriation: ‘the diligent imitators of Tully and Demosthenes (most worthy to be imitated) did not so much keep Nizolian paper-books of their figures and phrases, as by attentive translation (as it were) devour them whole, and made them wholly theirs’. The often lamented marginal position of Scottish early modern literature was also the key to its insatiable exploration of continental models and its development of forms that had long exhausted their vitality in Italy or France. -

This thesis aims to demonstrate that Lindsay and his works represent an invaluable source for a much broader study of Renaissance Scotland and that placing each in a proper historical and cultural context sheds an important light on some of the ideas and attitudes which shaped Scotland's political and religious culture during this crucial period. -

Tayis Bank: A Critical Edition Lucinda Holdsworth Introduction: The Bannatyne Manuscript ‘Tayis Bank’ is taken from the Bannatyne manuscript (c.1568), which is now held by the National Library of Scotland under the catalogue number NLS Adv. MS. 1.1.6.1 It was compiled by George Bannatyne (1545-1608), a wealthy merchant on the fringes of courtly society. The Bannatyne manuscript is remarkable not only for its size, reaching an incredible 800 folio pages, but also for its scope. Containing over 400 poems ranging from short moral maxims to long works such as David Lyndsay’s Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis. William Ramson notes that the selection of poems ‘which is certainly courtly rather than popular, and which is predominantly Scottish […] draws on a variety of markedly different genres, from the most serious to the most inconsequential, from the professedly instructional to the simply entertaining, from the most aureate and ceremonial to the most familiarly colloquial’, although the majority can be considered to be courtly in nature.2 Just as remarkable is Bannatyne’s own editorial intervention. Whilst there is no chronological separation of verse, the manuscript is divided into five sections according to theme: ‘ballatis of theologie’, ‘ballatis full of wisdom and moralitie’, ‘ballatis mirry’, ‘ballatis of luve’ and ‘fabillis of esop with diuers vþir fabillis’. Even within these sections, Bannatyne has made use of additional subdivisions, editorial titles, attributions to poets and even the occasional editorial comment, as with his explanation of the decision to abridge Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis. That these comments have been written in a different ink suggests that the Bannatyne manuscript underwent regular amendment. -

Priscilla Bawcutt Dunbar and his Readers: From Allan Ramsay to Richard Burton It is curious that no full and detailed examination exists of a topic that is intrinsically interesting: the fluctuations in Dunbar's reputation. No "Critical Heritage" volume has been devoted to Dunbar, or indeed to any of the Makars. There do exist selective studies: an article by Elizabeth Roth in 1981 surveyed changing critical attitudes to The Twa Mariit Wemen and the Wedo, and my own Dunbar the Makar examined how differently people have responded, over the centuries, to his comedy or his language.! An article by Jean Jacques Blan chot has the promising title "Dunbar and his Critics," but consists largely of statistical tables and lists of titles. Bibliographical aids, however, such as Blanchot's article and the substantial works by Geddie, Ridley, Scheps and Looney, and Gray,2 should not be despised; they are the essential starting-point for serious study of this subject. -

Gregory Kratzmann Political Satire and the Scottish Reformation Political satire, whether written in prose or verse, whether written in 1560 or 1960, tends to have a very short shelf-life-the interest and rele vance of the subjects addressed diminish very rapidly when they are no longer topical, unless (as in the case of Swift or Orwell) those subjects are clad in particularly beguiling fictional dress. When constructing a text of Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis, George Bannatyne saw fit to leave out what he describes as "the grave mater thairof, becaws the samyne abuse is weill reformit in Scotland," and to preserve in his anthology "only sertane mirry interludis thairof, very plesand. "I This was done little more than a decade after the 1552 performance of the play. The probability that Bannatyne's practice as an editor reflects a conservative political stance-if not anti Reformist at least pro-Marian2-highlights another challenge offered by pol itical satire, which is that the polemical satire of one historical moment is open to reinterpretation by the readers and writer of later periods. -

The Prosody of the Middle Scots Alliterative Poems* J. Derrick McClure The importance of the alliterative line as a staple of Middle Scots poetry has long been recognized, and the essential characteristics of the thirteen-line stanza form favoured by Scottish poets have often been described. In her 1975 landmark study “The Allitera- tive Tradition in Middle Scots Verse,” a doctoral dissertation which is still by far the most comprehensive account of the structural features of the verse form, Margaret Mackay lists the poems which utilize this stanza: besides three substantial poems of major literary and historical importance, The Buke of the Howlat, Rauf Coilyear, and Golagros and Gawane,1 the list includes Sum Practysis of Medecyne by Henryson and the Prologue to the Eighth Book of Douglas’s Eneados, the anonymous Gyre-Carling, * This is a revised and expanded version of a paper originally presented at the Eleventh International Conference on Scottish Language and Literature — Medieval and Renaissance, Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, July 2005. 20 A MODERN BANNATYNE A MODERN BANNATYNE DIGITAL HUMANITIES SPECIAL FEATURE Lucy Hinnie, University of Saskatchewan ABSTRACT This essay introduces the Bannatyne Manuscript as an historical and literary artefact and describes the process through which it is being digitized. The importance of this project lies in its goal of making this important manuscript more easily accessible. In addition to discussing the method behind the manuscript’s digitization, it also examines issues related to the creation of digital editions more broadly while examining the editorial process behind the manuscript’s creation by George Bannatyne. Keywords: Scotland; Bannatyne Manuscript; Scottish literature; Scottish verse; digital humanities; digitization; digital edition The Bannatyne manuscript (c. 1568) is a crucial artefact for the study of Older Scots literature and late-medieval Scottish history. The manuscript is currently held in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh as Adv MS 1.1.6. The Catalogue of English Literary Manuscripts describes it as: A formal anthology of Scottish poetry, including 51 poems presently attributed to William Dunbar, largely in a single secretary hand, with a few later additions in other hands, in two tall folio volumes, with differing series of pagination and foliation, vol. I comprising 192 leaves (paginated 1–385), vol. II LUCY HINNIE IRSS 44 (2019) 21 comprising 205 leaves (paginated 387–795), all leaves now mounted separately in window mounts, each volume in 19th-century green morocco elaborately gilt.1 These leaves are divided into thematic sections – theology, morality, comedy, love and fables. The manuscript was compiled by George Bannatyne, a young man of high Edinburgh society, during an outbreak of plague ‘quhen we fra work were compeld to rest’ (when we from work were compelled to rest). -

The com- plexities of this relationship are illustrated through the analysis of certain key texts published during the years before and after the emergence of the United Kingdom. i. a language suppressed? One widespread narrative of Scottish cultural history holds that the Scots language was suppressed, as part of a general and incrementally severe attack on a Scottish vernacular culture, during the period after the Unions of Crowns and Parliaments: A Language Suppressed, to quote the somewhat misleading title of Charles Jones’s otherwise excellent book on eighteenth- century Scots and English in Scotland.1 It is certainly true that the ‘cultural capital’ of Scots vernacular expres- sion has been frequently contested, but the true story is more complex. -

1 Walter Scott’s Bannatyne Club, Elite Male Associational Culture, and the Making of Identities ABSTRACT: Examination of the choice of George Bannatyne (1545–1607/8) as titular patron for the antiquarian printing society founded by Sir Walter Scott, the Bannatyne Club (1823–1861), casts new light on the elite male associational culture of the gentleman’s club at a moment of transition from amateur scholarship to the professional academic work of universities and learned societies. In celebrating Bannatyne, the Club engages in self-conscious practices of myth-making that illuminate the members’ sense of their own relationship to the past, and of the Club’s function in endorsing a distinctive Scottish identity in the context of political union. Analysis of a unique collection of papers compiled by an ordinary club member, James Nairne, offers evidence of the complex intersection of personal and scholarly motivations at work in the antiquarian printing club, and of the significance of the past in shaping personal and collective identities. ARTICLE: The antiquarian printing society founded by Sir Walter Scott, the Bannatyne Club (1823– 1861), plays an important part in the development of literary and historical studies in nineteenth- century Britain. Scott’s Club was initially modelled on the elite Roxburghe Club (1812–), then a society of thirty-one members, primarily drawn from the aristocracy, but including a few gentlemen. Each Roxburghe member was to present a reprint of a rare book or edition of a manuscript to the Club, in a run strictly limited to one hundred copies, though in practice fewer were usually printed, and Roxburghe Club books were kept in private hands.1 In contrast, the 2 Bannatyne Club from the outset encompassed a more diverse membership, including men involved in the trades of publishing and printing.
