Is Pleased to Present a Day with David Wilson IS PLEASED TO PRESENT A DAY WITH DAVID WILSON FRIDAY OCTOBER 27 TH 9:00am – 3:00pm Stirling Arena Stirling Ontario Explore the creative side of skating with one of the world’s most talented choreographers. MELANIE BARKER – OFF ICE JODY JONES – STROKING EDGES & TURNS A More Detailed Schedule Will Be Emailed Out. www.stirlingskate.ca David Wilson is the visionary behind many of figure skating’s most celebrated performances of the past twenty- five years. Born and raised in Toronto, David’s competitive career was cut short and redirected by injury. He toured for five years as a chorus and featured performer with Ice Capades, and then he set out to explore the art of choreography on ice. His early work with professionals such as World Champion and two-time Olympic Silver Medallist, Brian Orser, launched him as an unstoppable creative force. By 2007 his versatility produced a rare clean sweep when he created the winning programs for each senior event at the Canadian Championships - Ladies, Men, Pairs and Dance. In 2009 David was honoured with the PSA Paul McGrath Choreography Award. Today, David’s reach is global. On the competitive stage his signature pieces evoke distinct images. Joannie Rochette’s spirited Firebird. Sasha Cohen’s passionate Romeo and Juliet with which she won a silver medal at the 2006 Olympic Games. Alissa Czisny’s gentle and romantic Doctor Zhivago Suite, which resulted in her emotional comeback victory at the 2009 US National Championships. These are just a few programs that are part of the skating community’s collective memory. South Korean Kim Yuna’s historic 2010 Olympic performances of David’s playfully tantalizing "Bond Girl" short program and sublime "Concerto in F" free program are widely acknowledged as two of the greatest ever. Yuna’s final 2014 Olympic silver medal performances of his poignant Send in the Clowns and Adiós Nonino are further examples of David’s ability to weave technical prowess with visceral beauty. David’s decade-long creative guidance was crucial to Yuna’s unprecedented record-breaking success because he understood her at every stage and gave her vehicles that reflected her heart. For ice dancers Marie France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, David created Somewhere in Time, a breathtakingly romantic free dance, which became a much lauded signature piece that transformed the dance event and instantly catapulted Dubreuil and Lauzon to World Silver Medallists. In the Pairs event, 2008 World Bonze Medallists, Dubé and Davidson, 2010 Olympic Silver Medallists Pang and Tong and most recently 2015 World Silver Medallists Sui and Han have all turned to David. Many of David’s most notable works have been in the Men’s event. 2008 World Champion and 2006 Olympic Bronze Medallist Jeffrey Buttle (Ararat, Samson & Delilah), three-time World Champion Patrick Chan (Revolutionary Étude, Mack the Knife, The Four Seasons, La Bohème), and 2014 Olympic Champion Yuzuru Hanyu (Romeo and Juliet) are just a few of skating’s royalty who have showcased David’s talents. His ability to draw out what is unique in each skater is particularly evident with first-ever Spanish World Champion, Javier Fernández, whose affable charm shines in programs such as Charlie Chaplin, Black Betty, Barber of Seville and Guys and Dolls. The list will continue to grow. David is dedicated to helping skaters realize their dreams and he brings the same commitment and enthusiasm to young, aspiring stars and seasoned, international competitors alike. David maintains life-long relationships nurturing his students. He first began working with a fourteen- year-old Jeffrey Buttle, saw him through to the peak of his competitive career and continues to choreograph for him to this day. Both Sides Now is a moving representation of their lasting and inspired relationship on the ice. David is also keen to exercise his artistry in the show-skating world and for the camera. In 2001 David directed and choreographed the eight-city farewell tour for Canadian sweetheart Josée Chouinard. In 2008 with Brian Orser he staged Fest On Ice, a live and televised all-star production in Seoul, South Korea. He has served as Director and Choreographer for All That Skate since its launch in 2010 in Los Angeles and South Korea, and has continued to stage their shows in South Korea twice annually since. David acted as choreographer for the remake of the feature film Ice Castles and he was a choreographer for the first season of the CBC hit series Battle of the Blades. David relishes sharing the process and has often joined forces to design programs with many of the leading choreographers including Shae-Lynn Bourne, Jeffrey Buttle, Marie-France Dubreuil, Julie Marcotte, Sebastian Britten, and with Cathy Dalton for her synchronize skating teams, Black Ice and Meraki. I’ve also been privileged to experience David’s generosity as a collaborator and his irrepressible inspiration. David’s thoughtful, exquisite choreography continues to shape the most revered stars and fuel expression on ice. His unique understanding of music as it relates to a skater’s personal journey; his brilliant steps, and his honest interpretations have produced indelible works of art… and champions. - Sandra Bezic Melanie BarKer - My name is Melanie Barker and I am a CSEP-Certified Personal Trainer in addition to an NCCP Certified Professional Figure Skating Coach.
