We inves- tigated the effects of Scots pine sawdust amendment, applied a year before planting, on the abundance and diversity of culturable soil fungi 4, 14, and 16 years after treatment. The treatment was intended to increase populations of fungi antagonistic to Heterobasidion and soil suppressiveness to tree root pathogens. Effects of treatment on fungal abundance were inconsistent; general or local, seasonal or continuous decreases or increas- es, often significant, were observed. There were, however, significant and continuous increases in frequency of antagonistic Clonostachys + Trichoderma and the mycorrhizal fungus Oidiodendron in treated soils compared with the control in all three fallow areas. Local and seasonal decreases in frequency of Penicillium + Talaromyces, Pseudogymnoascus, and entomopathogenic and nematophagous species were observed in treat- ed soils. Abundance of fungi was moderately and negatively correlated with soil pH (R2 = -0.61, P<0.0001). Abundance of Clonostachys + Trichoderma was moderately and positively correlated with mean annual tem- perature and positively correlated with total annual rainfall. Fresh sawdust, even applied undecomposed and without added mineral N (to aid microbial decomposition and plant growth), may be beneficial in sandy soil. Endophytic fungi from the Chinese medicinal plant Actinidia macrosperma were isolated and identified for the first time. This was the first study to evaluate their cytotoxic and antitumour activities against brine shrimp and five types of tumour cells, respectively. In total, 17 fungal isolates were obtained. Five different taxa were represented by 11 isolates, and six isolates were grouped into the species of Ascomycete Incertae sedis with limited morphological and molecular data. Cytotoxic activity has been found in most isolates except AM05, AM06, and AM10. The isolates AM07 (4.86 µg/mL), AM11 (7.71 µg/mL), and AM17 (14.88 µg/mL) exhibited significant toxicity against brine shrimp. The results of the MTT assay to assess antitumour activity revealed that 82.4% of isolate fermentation broths displayed growth inhibition (50% inhibitory concentration IC50 < 100 µg/mL).

In this context, the present study focused on the analysis of the plant growth promotion potential of Purpureocillium lilacinum, Purpureocillium lavendulum and Metarhizium marquandii aiming its use as bioinoculants in maize, bean and soybean. Methods: Purpureocillium spp. and M. marquandii strains were isolated from soil samples. They were screened for their ability to solubilize phosphorus (P) and produce indoleacetic acid (IAA) and the most promising strains were tested at greenhouse in maize, bean and soybean plants. Fungi contain several types of GSLs that are distinct from those of mammals, but little is known about their physiological functions, metabolic regulation, or biosynthetic pathways. Most fungal species that possess fungal neogala-series GSLs (FNG-GSLs) are resistant to aureobasidin A (AbA), an antifungal agent that inhibits glyco- sylinositolphosphoceramide (GIPC) synthesis. We have previously reported that Mariannaea elegans has FNG-GSLs in its cell membrane, despite the fact that it is sensitive to AbA. In this study, we demonstrated that M. elegans contains GIPCs, which explains its sensitivity to AbA. We also found that both cell growth and GSL composition of M. elegans were affected by the presence or absence of different sugars in the culture medium. In contrast, sugars had no effect on the phenotypes and GSLs of AbA-resistant Rhizopus sp. lacking GIPCs. Further analysis revealed that FNG-GSL production can be modulated by the addition of 600 mM NaCl in a glucose-containing medium. Fi- nally, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of Golgi proteins from M. elegans showed that at least nine proteins were present exclusively in cells producing FNG-GSL, suggesting that those proteins are potential candidates for FNG-GSL synthesis.

The result is an extensive revision of taxonomic concepts, typification, and nomenclatural details of many anamorph- and teleomorph-typified genera of theNectriaceae, most notably Cosmospora and Fusarium. The combined phylogenetic analysis shows that the present concept of Fusarium is not monophyletic and that the genus divides into two large groups, one basal in the family, the other terminal, separated by a large group of species classified in genera such as Calonectria, Neonectria, and Volutella. All accepted genera received high statistical support in the phylogenetic analyses. Preliminary polythetic morphological descriptions are presented for each genus, providing details of perithecia, micro- and/or macro-conidial synanamorphs, cultural characters, and ecological traits.

Numerous microorganisms have been described in the literature as biological control agents for pests and diseases, although some have not yet been commercialised due to their lack of viability or efficacy in different crops. Paecilomyces is a cosmopolitan fungus that is mainly known for its nematophagous capacity, but it has also been reported as an insect parasite and biological control agent of several fungi and phytopathogenic bacteria through different mechanisms of action. In addition, species of this genus have recently been described as biostimulants of plant growth and crop yield. This review includes all the information on the genus Paecilomyces as a biological control agent for pests and diseases. Its growth rate and high spore production rate in numerous substrates ensures the production of viable, affordable, and efficient commercial formulations for agricultural use.
