THE NORTON TTELEGRAMELEGRAM

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2020 OpinionOpinion PAGE 4 Haynes says call it quits

It’s time for President Donald Trump to stop trying to turn the election around and instead devote himself to healing the country and the Republican Party. Steve Haynes We understand this will be tough for Mr. Trump to swallow. He is never wrong and he does not like to lose, but lost he has. We realize also that four years of Biden-Harris leadership will be hard on us out here in red, red western Kansas. It’s just that it’s come to the point where there is nothing further to be gained. Vice President Biden won by 306 electoral votes to 232 for the president, ac- cording to the Associated Press, an almost insurmountable challenge for lawsuits, which are notoriously undependable in changing election outcomes. The Demo- crat’s margin was 68 electoral votes, and the president would need to overturn the decision in at least three states. We don’t see that happening. While margins are terribly thin in a couple of states – Wisconsin with 10 elec- toral votes was decided by just 20,700 out of more than 3.2 million cast and Georgia with 16 by 13,000 out of 5 million. Georgia has already had its recount. So has Wisconsin. The president still lost both. Pennsylvania with 20 electoral votes was decided by 80,000 ballots out of more than 6 million cast and Michigan, with 16, by 150,000, or 2.4 percent of the vote cast. These two are not likely to change. Charges of possible vote cheating won’t sway anyone, especially not the courts, without hard evidence. And Mr. Trump, like our own Kris Kobach, has been a little short on that. A Trump-appointed federal appellate judge, when throwing a Pennsylvania lawsuit out, chided the president, “Voters, not lawyers, choose the president. Bal- lots, not briefs, decide elections.” It will little matter how much money the president spends from here on out. He will still lose the election. Joe Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20, and Mr. Trump What’s the point? will have to move out.
