Ces 6 films attestent du génie de l’auteur, tout en montrant sa cohérence et sa diversité mêlées. De son premier polar en noir et blanc (L’Amour est plus froid que la mort) au drame familial intense (Roulette chinoise), en passant par ses mélodrames chocs (Le Droit du plus fort) et ses classiques incontestés (Le Mariage de Maria Braun, Tous les autres s’appellent Ali), retrouvez 6 œuvres culte du cinéma de R.W. Fassbinder ! L’AMOUR EST PLUS FROID QUE LA MORT 1969 – N&B – 89 mn L’Amour est plus froid que la mort est le premier film de R.W. Fassbinder. Il explore, à la manière des films noirs américains, les relations conflictuelles d’un triangle amoureux fondé sur une hypothétique confiance. Hanna Schygulla, lumineuse, incarne à la perfection la femme fatale, icône indispensable au genre représenté. TOUS LES AUTRES S’APPELLENT ALI 1973 – Couleurs – 93 mn Amoureux de l’œuvre de Douglas Sirk, Fassbinder fait son Tout ce que le ciel permet. Mais il ajoute à l’histoire d’amour transgénérationnelle un élément inattendu, en faisant de l’homme un immigré marocain. S’ensuit une chronique du racisme ordinaire, qui met le doigt sur la petitesse d’esprit et le goût du commérage de l’Allemagne contemporaine. LE DROIT DU PLUS FORT 1974 – Couleurs – 124 mn Un sommet dans l’œuvre de Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Une histoire d’amour déséquilibrée et perverse entre deux homosexuels, dont l’auteur, à la fois devant et derrière la caméra, symbolise la réalité des rapports de classe dans la société d’aujourd’hui : les prolétaires sont et seront toujours exploités par la classe dominante, et aucun mélange n’est ni ne sera possible. ROULETTE CHINOISE 1976 – Couleurs – 86 mn Autour d’une enfant handicapée et de sa famille, Fassbinder dresse le portrait d’une société allemande en pleine perdition. L’absence d’amour et de dévotion des parents face à l’infirmité du personnage principal n’est ici que prétexte pour excuser leur existence morose et sans avenir. Roulette chinoise est une œuvre âpre et cynique d’une effrayante justesse. DESPAIR 1978 – Couleurs – 115 mn Rainer Werner Fassbinder réalise ici sa première production internationale en langue anglaise, réunissant Dirk Bogarde (Mort à Venise) et Andréa Ferréol (La Grande Bouffe). Adaptée d’un roman de Vladimir Nabokov, cette œuvre iconoclaste met en scène l’Allemagne des années 30 sur fond de montée du nazisme. Fidèle à son cinéma, Fassbinder compose un film baroque influencé aussi bien par les drames classiques que par l’esthétique psychédélique. LE MARIAGE DE MARIA BRAUN 1978 – Couleurs – 121 mn La reconnaissance publique de Fassbinder, en Allemagne et en France n’arriva que tardivement, à la fin des années 1970, avec son 33e long-métrage, Le Mariage de Maria Braun. C’est aussi le premier volet d’une trilogie sur l’Allemagne des années 1950, celle d’Adenauer, de la reconstruction et du miracle économique. Un hommage magnifique au mélodrame hollywoodien, en particulier au maître de Fassbinder : Douglas Sirk. Un soir, elle croise sur son chemin une étrange et séduisante femme qui la conduit de force dans une impasse avant de la mordre au cou. Bientôt, Kathleen va développer un appétit féroce pour le sang humain qu’elle assouvira en attaquant ses proches ou des inconnus… Deux ans après Body Snatchers, l’invasion continue et Snake Eyes, le réalisateur Abel Ferrara change radicalement de style avec The Addiction, film de vampire à petit budget aux thématiques très personnelles. Tourné en seulement vingt jours dans un New York obscur et quasi cauchemardesque, filmé dans un noir et blanc très contrasté rappelant l’univers de Murnau, The Addiction montre une héroïne en proie à ses démons, où la soif de sang n’est pas sans rappeler la dépendance à la drogue. Sujets de réflexion favoris de Kathleen, la loi du plus fort et la théorie du darwinisme sont désormais mis en pratique par la jeune philosophe jusqu’à un final des plus sanglants. Admirablement interprété, de Lily Taylor (Six Feet Under) à Christopher Walken (The King of New York), The Addiction est à découvrir en avant- première dans sa restauration 2K !     “PLENTY OF FOOD FOR EVERYONE”: A BALTHASARIAN LOOK AT BABETTE’S FEAST JACQUES SERVA IS “Grace is not external to created being as love.” “Like at the wedding at Cana,” affirms an old man at the extrava- gant French dinner in Babette’s Feast, “the food is not important.”1 Yes, surely something more than drinking and eating is at stake in John 2:1–11. The same holds for the film itself, which, though it revolves around a seven-course meal offered to poor villagers, “is not a film about cooking,” nor is the dinner whatsoever “an end in itself,” as the Danish director Gabriel Axel makes clear in an interview.2 But does all this make food and wine irrelevant? 1. Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor in Danish Studies Marianne Stecher Department of Scandinavian Studies Despite growing ubiquitous in both the popular and academic mind in recent years, the Gothic has, perhaps not surprisingly, yet to be examined within the notoriously realism-prone literary canon of Denmark. This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. Ingemann, Hans Christian Andersen, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), as well as contemporary writers such as Peter Høeg and Leonora Christina Skov. This examination does not only broaden our understanding of these culturally significant writers and the discourses they write within and against, it also adds to our understanding of the Gothic – an infamously malleable and indefinable literary mode – by redirecting attention to a central feature of the Gothic that has not received much critical attention: the emphasis on excess, spectacle, clichéd conventions, histrionic performances, its hyperbolic rhetorical style, and hyper-visual theatricality.

Babette brings a quiet revolution to this starkly pious village, in the form of one exquisite meal.

    Babette’s Culinary Turn An Essay Jörg Wiesel This exposition suggests rewatching “Babette’s Feast” by Gabriel Axel with a view to the questions addressed by this book. In the first episode of the Netflix series “Chef’s Table” by David Gelb, the Italian chef Massimo Bottura presented his risotto recipe as a “social gesture” – and not just in light of the Modena earthquake, which has posed a major threat to the existence of many regional producers. Bottura places a strong emphasis on supporting local businesses by incorporating their characteristic products into the menus at his restaurant “Osteria Francescana” in Modena. For the TV production, he once more encapsu- lated the principle of the so-called Nova Regio cuisine, which has drawn a great deal of attention to local rural culture and environment through referencing regional and seasonal products. David Gelb’s decision to show the three-Michelin-starred chef ambling around local markets, chatting to regional producers and shopping locally was therefore absolutely logical. And Bottura was happy to play along, assertively expounding his political ambition for ecological and economic sustainability in the context of culi- nary and gastronomical responsibility. The lavishly produced documentary highlights the unique nature of Bottura’s cooking, developed first in the chef’s mind, then in his kitchen. Traditional cinematographic audiovisual strategies place the visit to a restaurant in the same category as a trip to the opera, theatre or attending a concert, as guests can often look forward to an evening conceived, rehearsed and perfectly prepared over the course of weeks, an experience with a unique aura.
