Worthen In passing, and with due regard to the time-honoured Shakesperian cliche about "What's in a Name?", it should be noted that the recent introspec­ tive deliberations of the Committee on "B & B" may be said to have had an LJ. effect on our own Association. Now that the Museum is nearly three years old, it has been qe­ cided to establish• in both official languages of Canada, the proper corporate name of our Museum. While the Museum at Delson, Q,uebec has been graced with several "official" titles during its infancy, now that it is growing up, the following official title has been designated as being THE one: Canadian Railway Museum - Musee Ferroviare Canadien. The device which is shown above is the official symbol of the Canadian Railway Illuseum - Musee Ferroviare Canadien, and will ap­ pear on all communications media, as well as on signs, displays and other public notices at the Museum and elsewhere. Members are urged to refer to the Museum by its proper title, so as to avoid confusion in the minds of the public. We hope that our new symbol will become as Vlell-known as other modern corporate symbols, which ar.e a familiar sight fro21 coast to coast. ]nformation, plea~e! The lower photo, showing Edmonton Radial Railway's Observation Car, was taken by Mr. Eric Smith and sent to us by Mr. E.W.Johnson, of Edmonton. Where and when did this tram see service, who built it, and when? We are looking for data concerning this interesting vehicle. S~nbol of the renaissance of Canadian railway passenger service is the Dining Car. Not so long ago considered a "drug on the market". dining cars are experiencing a tremendous upsurge in popularity and epitomize the relaxed luxury of rail travel. (C.N.R. photo) The Canada & Gulf Terminal Railway. Fred Angus he Lower St. Lawrence Region of the Province of Quebec was first served by a railway line in 1860, when the Grand Trunk Railway completed its line from Montreal to Riviere du Loup. For many years there had been discussion of a rail connection wi th the Mari­ time Provinces, and, eventually, in 1876, the Intercolonial Rail­ Tway was completed, and the Eastern provinces directly connected with the rest of Canada. However, the I.C.R. route between Levis and New Brunswick turned inland near what is now Mont Joli, and headed in a south­ erly direction through the Matapedia Valley, eventually connecting with the existing Mari time systems near Moncton. Thus the Gaspe region was not served by any track. The first concrete step towards building a line to Gaspe was taken in 1883 when a charter was granted to the Gaspesian Railway Co. This rai~ way was to be buil t from a connec tion wi th the Intercolonial to the end 0 f the Gaspe peninsula, a distance of more than 210 miles. However, nothing was done for the next 19 years due to lack of capital. In 1902 the name of the company Vias changed to the 11atane and Gaspe Railway Co. and a new charter was obtained. The connection with the I. C. R. was to be st. Octave de Hetis. During the next few years more def­ inite plans were drawn up and with the increased prosperity of Canada in the early 20th century, the scheme for a seaport on the Gulf of st.Lawrence became very attractive. With such a port, the province of Quebec could handle ocean ships all year round, instead of only when the river was open. Accordingly, in 1909, the Matane and Gaspe Railway Company wa§ reorganized, its name changed to the Canada and Gulf Term:Lnal Railway Co.', and the charter was amended. Under the new provisions, Ste. Flavie (now Mont Joli) was designated the connec­ tion with the Intercolonial. The railway was to follow the st. Lawrence to Matane, then turn inland along the Matane river, and thence to Mont Louis Village, and on to Gaspe Basin. An extension, westward from st. Falvie for about 100 miles, was planned to connect with the National Transcontinental Railway at st. Eleuthere. The whole railway would have a length of 315 miles. Soon after this, the contract for the first section, i.e. Ste. Flavie to Matane, was let to H. Doheny of Montreal. Grading began in the autumn of 1909, and before the year was over, the grade and bridges were nearly complete on the first 10 miles. Work continued in the Spring, and the first rail ~as laid on May 7th, 1910. 80 lb. rail was used, and all major bridges were of steel. By October 31st, the track had passed beyond Metis, and on December 7th, 1910, the entire section from Ste.Flavie (Mont Joli) to Matane was handed over to the company for operation, a distance of 36 miles. The company at this time had 3 steam locomotives, 2 passenger coaches, 15 box cars, and 30 flat cars, the latter apparently being used mostly in construction,as their numbers declined greatly soon after. Dur­ ing the winter of 1910-1911, surveys were successfully conducted on the extension from Matane to Gaspe, a route being found which would insure a maximum grade of 0.6%, over a line passing mostly through virgin forest. However, there was no new construction in 1911, and in fact not for the next 10 years. Further survey was carried out on the Gaspe exten­ sion, and preliminary surveys on the westward line to st. Eleuthere indi­ cated that a successful route would be located. Rolling stock in 1914 consisted of 2 locomotives, 2 passenger cars, 1 combine, 1 baggage car, 3 box cars, 4 flat cars, and a caboose. 28,033 passengers were carried. The certifica­ tion of her bOiler,which was an essential requirement for her con­ tinuing operation, was carefully monitored and,in the autumn of 1970 railway enthusiasts in eastern North America were sustained by the hope that the Railway Transport Committee of the Canadian Transport Commission would accept a request from Canadian National for a six­ months extension of this certification beyond the terrtinal date of March 24,1971. Indeed,it was a foregone conclusion. In Montreal and Toronto,enthusiast groups confidently made plans for autumn 1971 ex­ cursions. Oh happy time 1 Oh equally happy prediction! NO. 6218 would thus be retired in a polychromatic crescendo of celebrations and autumn colours in Montreal - or equally,in Toronto - in September, 1971. THE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MR. D. V. Thurman died April 18, 2020, at the age of 93. For several years, he lived at St. Martin's in the Pines where I picked him up for Mid-South meetings. He recently moved from an apartment to a room adjacent to his wife, Virginia, in Cottage A-Skilled Nursing. He and Virginia had been life-long train railfans, especially steam, and had rid- den many trains across North America and Europe. A gentleman with several hobbies, Thurman had a lifelong interest in World War II airplanes and working on Ford automobiles. I observed that we were not alone in our interests in pipe organs and trains. Traveling about the country to experience some of the remaining theatre or- gans, we met many who also were interested in trains. When we’ve held organ shows in Birmingham, some of the attendees went out of the way to ride a train to town.

    CANADIAN RAILWAY OBSERVATIONS Updated Version 05/13/07 _______________________________________________________ By William Baird JUNE 2007 CANADIAN PACIFIC CP Locomotives Retired since last issue: CP SD40-2’s 5498, 5584, 5639, 5646, 5655, 5656, 5666, 5816, 5826, and 5834 were all retired on March 30th. CP RAIL SYSTEM 5498 is a former SD45, one of seven SD45’s rebuilt to SD40M-2’s by MORRISON/KNUDSEN in 1995. CP SD40 5500 was finally moved to Revelstoke, BC, arriving on May 13th. 2007. It is still painted in faded CP RAIL action red (no multi-mark), but the museum is expected to repaint her into the “as delivered” CPR tuscan red and grey “script” livery. In the meantime, the SD40 will be stored inside beside 5468 and car #4. CP is having a sale of SD40-2’s with bids completed on May 9th: The locomotives include: SOO 781, 786, CP 5419, 5566, 5579, 5605, 5652, 5667, 5669, 5699, 5752, 5758, 5768, and 5821. On April 28th, freshly painted CP FP9Au’s 4106 and 4107 were released from NRE, and have been forwarded to Alyth Yard in Calgary AB.     INCORPORATED 1952 NUMBER 452 JUNE 1987 The first TTC ALRV, 4200, is put through its paces at the UTDC test track near Kingston, Ont., May 20, 1987. The car has been equipped with a bow collector temporarily but will sport a regular trolley pole in Toronto operation. The ALRV lacks its number and TTC crest, but already has a roll sign, turned up for 501 Queen, one of the routes on which it will operate. The boxes on the roof are for the ventilators and the brake resistors. Notable differences between this car and demonstrator 4900 include redesigned trucks, two sets of chopper controls, and standard foot controls instead of hand control. The first of the TTC's 52 ALRVs is expected to reach Toronto this summer, --Photo courtesy Ray Corley Two of the locomotives that helped the ONR to complete its dieselizatlon program were FP7A 1510 outshopped by DDGM in June, 1952, and GP9 1600, which left the London shop floor in July, 1956. The 1600 lacks the dynamic bralces so often associated with Geeps, but does have the less- familiar roof-mounted air reservoir tanks, as well as a steam generator for passenger service (note the stack in front of the bell).
