KEES VAN DONGEN From 11th June to 27th September 2009 PRESS CONFERENCE 11th June 2009, at 11.30 a.m. INAUGURATION 11th June 2009, at 19.30 p.m. Press contact: Phone: + 34 93 256 30 21 /26 Fax: + 34 93 315 01 02 [email protected] CONTENTS 1. PRESENTATION 2. EXHIBITION TOUR 3. EXHIBITION AREAS 4. EXTENDED LABELS ON WORKS 5. CHRONOLOGY 1. PRESENTATION This exhibition dedicated to Kees Van Dongen shows the artist‘s evolution from his student years to the peak of his career and evokes many of his aesthetic ties and exchanges with Picasso, with whom he temporarily shared the Bateau-Lavoir. Born in a suburb of Rotterdam, Van Dongen‘s career was spent mainly in Paris where he came to live in 1897. A hedonist and frequent traveller, he was a regular visitor to the seaside resorts of Deauville, Cannes and Monte Carlo, where he died in 1968. Van Dongen experienced poverty, during the years of revelry with Picasso, and then fame before finally falling out of fashion, a status he endured with a certain melancholy. The exhibition confirms Kees Van Dongen‘s decisive role in the great artistic upheavals of the early 20th century as a member of the Fauvist movement, in which he occupied the unique position of an often irreverent and acerbic portraitist. The virulence and extravagance of his canvases provoked immediate repercussions abroad, particularly within the Die Brücke German expressionist movement. Together with his orientalism, contemporary with that of Matisse, this places Van Dongen at the very forefront of the avant-garde. -
Mergers and Acquisitions Report Turkey 2013
Mergers and Acquisitions Report Turkey 2013 January 2014 Foreword In 2013, many countries continued to be impacted by the global economic crisis and political and economic troubles still dominated agendas. Yet, Turkey, with its economy still growing, albeit to a lesser extent than in previous years, continued to distinguish itself as a successful, important and attractive country to invest in, not only in its region but in the world. In a year when global mergers and acquisitions volume slowed down, Turkey also experienced a slight decrease in transaction volume but reached a record high in terms of the number of deals. After such a year, we are delighted to share the twelfth “EY Mergers and Acquisitions Report”, a widely respected and much used reference material by all market players. The EY Mergers and Acquisitions Report 2013 is a thorough compilation of the facts and trends in mergers and acquisitions that were realized in Turkey in 2013, including comparisons with previous years. The Report also presents the results of our traditional “Mergers and Acquisitions in Turkey Survey” whose participants comprised shareholders and upper management of prominent public companies and private sector establishments in Turkey. We thank the survey participants for their contributions and support, as well as the EY Corporate Finance Team who prepared the EY Mergers and Acquisitions Report 2013. Alsdorf Reviews the Liberation of Painting by Patricia Leighten
Alsdorf reviews The Liberation of Painting by Patricia Leighten http://www.19thc-artworldwide.org/spring14/alsdorf-reviews-the... Patricia Leighten, The Liberation of Painting: Modernism and Anarchism in Avant-Guerre Paris Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2013. 248 pp.; 99 b&w illustrations, 32 color illustrations; bibliography; index. $50.00 (cloth); $7.00-40.00 (e-book) ISBN #9780226471389 Modernism’s relation to politics is uncontested. The debate that endures surrounds the nature of the relationship (direct, indirect, or inverse?) and the artist’s role in shaping it, as a deliberate political actor or a medium of social- historical forces. Patricia Leighten’s new book, The Liberation of Painting: Modernism and Anarchism in Avant-Guerre Paris, is an absorbing and scholarly study that shows all of these possibilities in play, sometimes in the case of one artist’s oeuvre. Leighten zealously argues for a more politicized, historicized account of modernist painting by focusing on a group of artists with documented ties to the anarchist movement. Pitched as a corrective to the “resolutely apolitical formalist art criticism” that still serves as the foundation of histories of abstraction in both the academy and the museum, Leighten’s book demands that we attend more closely to the political passions of key modernists on a case-by-case basis, not only (or even especially) as manifest in painting, but also as conveyed in the less hallowed production of satirical prints, as well as in these artists’ personal relationships, statements, and writings (2). The result is a rich and multifaceted argument for a “politics of form” as a driving force behind the pre-war production of Kees Van Dongen, Maurice de Vlaminck, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and František Kupka. -

Kees van Dongen (Dutch/French, 1877-1968) Cavaliers dans les bois c.1906 oil on canvas 41 x 33 cm (16⅛ x 13 in.) signed 'van Dongen’ (lower left) Provenance: Madame Boris Kniaseff Knoedler & Co, New York (acquired from the above on 30 July 1953) (stock no. A 5405) J.H. Griffin (acquired from the above on 4 November 1953) Sale: Galerie Charpentier Paris, 9 December 1959, no. 27 (illustrated pl. X, titled Les Cavaliers au Bois de Boulogne) Private collection, France Private collection, France (bequeathed by the above) Thence by descent Notes: This work will be included in the forthcoming Van Dongen Digital Catalogue Raisonné, currently being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc. Following his successful debut with Galerie Vollard in 1904 and participation at the Salon d’Automne the year after, it was only natural that van Dongen’s career continued to progress rapidly throughout 1906. Already acquainted with Andre Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, van Dongen also held a studio with neighbour, Pablo Picasso (fig. 1 - a cavalier by van Dongen hangs to the left of Picasso) at Le Bateau-Lavoir, a popular rendez-vous for creatives in the heart of Montmartre. It was during this period that van Dongen delved further into Fauvism from Pointillism and developed a personal style which differentiated him from his peers. The present work demonstrates van Dongen’s signature use of bright Fauve colours with earthy undertones. Although the blurred edges release the subjects from the restrains of realism, the route to total abstraction is diverted by the use of a few, block colours to help distinguish one subject from another. -

Turkish Outbound M&A Review 2014-2015
Turkish Outbound M&A Review 2014-2015 May 2016 2 Foreword Despite volatile financial markets and local political tension in the last two years, Turkish companies were keen on expanding their global footprint via acquisitions in new geographies. Although the number of deals was lower as compared to the previous periods, the deal volume was remarkable. Turkish corporates’ appetite to expand in global markets translated into a record-breaking level in 2014 in terms of deal value, especially through a couple of mega deals; and last year Turkish investors remained eager but cautious in investing abroad, due to the ascending political uncertainty and weakened financial performance of the companies. Looking ahead, cross border acquisitions of Turkish companies will increase at a strong pace as part of their operational strategies towards becoming regional players and benefiting from the growth potential in the new markets. On behalf of our corporate finance team in Deloitte Turkey, we are delighted to share our Turkish Outbound M&A Review, featuring our analyses regarding the cross-border investments of Turkish corporates over the past two years.
