Curriculum Review and Development Committee, IOF) iv FOREWORD Curriculum revision and improvement is dynamic process and includes the adoption, modification or deletion of specific programs or courses, the design and evaluation of proposed programs or courses, and the selection of compatible and appropriate instructional materials. The Institute of Forestry has revised the curricula of master’s degree programs incorporating new and relevant courses of studies. The curriculum of M. Sc. in Forestry has been revised for the third time whereas M. Sc. in Watershed Management and M. Sc. in Natural Resource Management and Rural Development have been revised for the second time. The M. Sc. in Wildlife Management and Biodiversity Conservation curriculum has been revised for the first time. Realizing national and global needs of professionals in the field of mountain environment and sustainable development and providing training to professionals for managing and promoting community forestry in Nepal and across the globe, we have also introduced two new master’s degree programs: M.Sc. in Mountain Environment and Development Studies, and M.Sc. in Community Forestry from this year. INTRODUCTION The Institute of Forestry (initially named as Nepal Forestry Institute) was established in Kathmandu in 1947 AD (2004 B. S.). In 1957, the then Nepal Forestry Institute was shifted to Suping (Bhimphedi) in Makwanpur district and later to Hetauda in 1965. It was then incorporated into Tribhuvan University in July 1972 and was renamed as Institute of Forestry (IOF). Institute of Forestry is a pioneer institution in Nepal that provides academic education in the field of forestry, biodiversity conservation and natural resource management. During 1970s, Institute of Forestry provided training and education to mid-level forestry professionals (Rangers). The academic program of Institute of Forestry was expanded to Bachelor of Science in Forestry in1981 and in the same year, the Bachelor degree program was shifted to Pokhara. In 2001, IOF started Master degree program in forestry. Later in 2004, two additional master degree programs, M.Sc. Watershed Management and M.Sc. Natural Resource Management and Rural Development were launched. IOF started offering the PhD degree in forestry from 2004 and another Master degree program in Wildlife Management and Biodiversity Conservation in 2018. IOF has started two more M.Sc. programs namely, Community Forestry, and Mountain Environment and Development Studies in 2019. At present, the Dean’s office of IOF is in the premises of Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu. In addition to other regular activities, the Dean’s office has also responsibility of operating the PhD and M.Sc. (Wildlife Management and Biodiversity Conservation, Mountain Environment and Development Studies) programs in Kathmandu. IOF’s two constituent campuses: Pokhara Campus and Hetauda Campus are implementing B.Sc. Forestry program and M.Sc. Programs. The Kathmandu Forestry College, an affiliated campus of the IOF is also implementing B.Sc. Forestry and M.Sc. NRMRD programs. IOF has the mission to develop technically sound and competent, and socially compatible human resources in the field of forestry, biodiversity conservation and natural resource management. The objectives of the IOF are to design and implement educational programs that can address the needs and interest of the country in the area of forestry, produce competent professionals in the field of natural resource management, conduct research to address the practical problems of the society and develop IOF as the center of excellence in forestry and natural resources management education and research. 1 2. The pests cause enormous losses both in tonnage and recovery of sugar in the mill. It is estimated about 8 to 10 percent of total sugarcane crop in the country is damaged by insects every year and this works out to a loss of 80 to 100 corers of rupees. The occurrence of drought and flood influenced the heavy buildup certain pests over large areas in epidemic from. (Siddiqui, 1960; Verma et, al. 1991). In general, the insect pest problems of sugarcane are more sever in subtropical belt than the fropical belt. Widespread use of synthetic pesticides has led to the development of pesticidal resistance in a large number of insect pests (Saxena and Khan, 1986). There has been an urgent need for selective and effective pest control methods which can be easily included in the modem pest management concept (Back, 1972) new bioactive products will be needed which are pest specific. Ecofriendly to man and other beneficial organisms biodegradable, less prone to development of pest resistance and economical viable. Insecticides of plant origin provided a substantial answer to many of the problems particularly the environmental pollution and ecofriendly in nature.

Accepted 9 September, 2011 Calotropis procera belonging to family Asclepiadaceae, is one of the important medicinal plants that is being used since years to treat many ailments. It is used either alone or with other medicines to treat common diseases such as fever, rheumatism, indigestion, cough, cold, eczema, asthma, elephantiasis, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. According to ayurveda, dried whole plant is a good tonic, expectorant, depurative and anthelmintic. In the present study, different extractives of leaves of C. procera have been screened for their larvicidal activities against important defoliators ( Clostera cupreata ) of Poplar and ( Plecoptera reflexa ) of Shisham. The 3rd instar larvae of C . cupreata and P. reflexa were exposed to a wide range of concentrations (0.625 to 2.00%) of LC 50 value of each extract along with their control. The phytochemical analysis of these extracts suggested the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, proteins, terpenoids, sterols and flavonoids. The data indicate that leaf extracts of C. procera may be utilized as the probable candidates for the development of bioinsecticides to control the population of Poplar and Shisham defoliators as safer and economic alternatives to the synthetic insecticides.

The present study was undertaken in the province of Jharkhand to find out the insect pest fauna of D. sissoo their infestation and seasonal incidence. Total seventeen insect pests were recorded from the region out of which five insects belongs to Coleoptera viz. Apoderus sissu, Anomala dalbergiae, Anomala bengalensis, Myllocerus undecimpustulatus and Myllocerus discolour were observed. Similarly, five insect pests of order Lepidoptera viz. Agrotis ipsilon, Plecoptera reflexa, Ascotis infixaria, Dichomeris eridantis and Leucoptera sphenograpta were observed. Six insect pests belonging to order Hemiptera viz. Lawana conspersa, Ceroplastes rusci, Leptocentrus taurus, Myzus persicae, Icerya seychellarum, Drosicha dalbergiae and Odontotermes obesus. Among these, two insect pests Lawana conspersa and Icerya seychellarum were found first time on D. sissoo. Additionally, nature of damage, seasonal incidence and their infestation was also observed during the course of study.

Two new species, Ophiusa pseudotirhaca Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. and Rusicada pindraberensis Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. are described and one species, Pericyma cruegeri (Butler, 1886) is reported for the first time from India. This is an addition of about 17% of moths to the already recorded 138 species from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. The experiment was consisted with four pruning intensity of R Bajpai Dalbergia sissoo P0 - Un pruned, P1 - 25% (pruned Dalbergia sissoo), P2 - 50% (pruned Dalbergia Department of Forestry, sissoo), P3 - 75% (pruned Dalbergia sissoo), Open condition- No tree (Crop only) with different date of JNKVV, Jabalpur, sowing of turmeric in subtreatment. The result showed that shoot borer Conogethes punctiferalis, Leaf Madhya Pradesh, India roller - Udaspes folus and Rhyzome fly Mimegralla coeruleifrons was found in turmeric and Shisham defoliator - Plecoptera reflexa was found in shisham tree in all the pruning intensity. Number of all insect was less in open condition as compared to turmeric growing under shisham tree.

Email: [email protected] This paper presents an inventory of 418 species of moths (303 identified to species, 116 identified to genus) from 28 families belonging to 15 superfamilies, which were recorded by light trapping at eight sites in northern Western Ghats, India. Of the species recorded, with reference to their published distribution ranges, 11 species from five families appear to be new records for India, range extensions were noted for 130 species from 16 families, and 25 species from six families are endemic to India. The dominant families were Erebidae, Geometridae, Sphingidae and Crambidae. The highest number of moths were recorded from Malshej Ghat, Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Bheemashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. The highest species diversity was recorded from Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Amboli, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Malshej Ghat showed a number of new records and seem to support interesting and endemic moth fauna.

Abstract Updated checklist of 61 species in 6 tribes (Acantholipini, Anhydrophilini, Catocalini, Melipotini, Ophiusini and Toxocampini) and 30 genera of Catocalinae known to exist in Egypt are presented together with notes on their distribution, host records and taxonomical notes. Introduction In the recent years, the classification of Noctuidae, has been the subject of permanent taxonomic changes. These changes concern all the taxonomic categories, from species to the family rank, proposed in order to establish natural monophyletic groups. However, recent critical analyses revealed that the monophyly of the traditional ‘Noctuidae’ is doubtful (Mitchell et al., 2005; Fibiger & Lafontaine, 2005). Several authors have proposed a new classification of the Noctuoidea breaking them up into a number of independent families: Noctuidae, Erebidae, Nolidae and Micronoctuidae (Fibiger & Lafontaine, 2005; Fibiger & Hacker, 2005; Kononenko, 2005). This classification is followed here. Subdivision of the Noctuidae at the subfamily and tribal levels has recently also been the subject of major revision (Fibiger & Lafontaine, 2005; Fibiger & Hacker, 2005; Kononenko, 2005). Catocalinae are one of the largest subfamilies of the family Noctuidae. The global number of species is estimated at about 7000 (Speidel et al., 1996), most of them occurring in the tropics. Amer (2005) mentioned 29 species of Catocalinae known to exsist in Egypt. In this study, a complete check list of the currently known Catocalinae of Egypt is presented (61 species in 30 genera), including one species new to the fauna of the country.
