Two new species, Ophiusa pseudotirhaca Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. and Rusicada pindraberensis Singh & Ranjan, sp. nov. are described and one species, Pericyma cruegeri (Butler, 1886) is reported for the first time from India. This is an addition of about 17% of moths to the already recorded 138 species from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe­ meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac­ ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con­ nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo­ genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop­ tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur­ prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists.

NAWAWI1, and M. H. JAMALUDIN2 Abstract : Limited information is available on moth diversity in the Jeli District of Kelantan. An initial checklist of moths at three sites, namely Gunung Stong Tengah State Park, Jeli Permanent Forest Reserve and Gemang within the Jeli district, Kelantan was documented. INTRODUCTION Studies on moth diversity in different habitats and conditions in Malaysia such as tropical rainforest (Barlow 1989; Schulze and Fiedler 1997), lowland tropical rainforest (Robinson & Tuck ,1993; Intachat and Holloway, 2000), hill dipterocarp forest (Abang and Karim, 2005), peat swamp forest (Abang and Karim 1999) and plantation area (Chey 1994) elucidated that the diversity values differs due to the difference in vegetation types, altitudes and status of the forest. The highest diversity of macromoths was found from the lower montane forest at the altitude of about 1000m (Holloway 1984). Conversely, the sites of the mixed dipterocarp forest, mostly has low diversity value (Holloway 1984). One of the factors that have been considered as contributing to the lower moth diversity in the lowland areas is the predominance of dipterocarps, which are known to have a high content of alkaloids (defense against insects) in their foliage (Holloway 1984). In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution.
