Study Guide Entomology & Nematology Department
STUDY GUIDE ENTOMOLOGY & NEMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT DPM COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS The Entomology & Nematology Comprehensive Examinations consist of 3 sections: pest identification (30%), pest biology and management (40%), and core concepts and synthesis (30%). These examinations are limited to information about invertebrate animal pests, principally insects and nematodes, but also plant feeding mites and terrestrial molluscs. A. Pest identification Students will be presented with insects, mites, molluscs, and nematodes that they must identify. Some may be recognizable by sight, but others may require keys for identification. Students will be provided with identification aids (keys), where necessary, and be expected to use them to identify the subjects accurately. The unknowns will be selected from the list of important insect, mite, mollusc, and nematode pests (Table 1) though we will emphasize those with a single or double asterisk [* or **]), as these normally are the more important pests. Included in this list are some that pose a threat but are not currently found in Florida. B. Pest biology and management Students will answer 8-10 questions on insect, mite, mollusc, and nematode pest biology (sampling, distribution, life cycle, damage) and management. The animals for which students are responsible to know biology and management are listed in Table 1 (preceded by double asterisk [**]). C. Core Concepts and Synthesis Section: Students will answer 3 or 4 questions that cover core areas of Entomology/Nematology and demonstrate knowledge of core areas, but also analysis and problem solving. Suggested reference/reading material is listed in Table 2. You might want to read through these in preparation for the Comprehensive Examinations. -

Spatial Ecology of the Palm-Leaf Skeletonizer, Homaledra sabelella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) James T. Cronin* Department of Biological Sciences, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States of America Abstract Understanding the processes that determine the distribution of populations is a fundamental goal in ecology. In this study, I determined the relative contribution of space and the biotic and abiotic environment to the distribution of the palm-leaf skeletonizer Homaledra sabalella (PLS; Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) among patchily distributed dwarf palmettos (Sabal minor; Arecaceae). Based on surveys conducted at two sites in the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area, Louisiana, I found that the distribution of the PLS was primarily related to local environmental conditions – number of PLS increased with palmetto height, was greater in dry versus wet habitats, and varied in an inconsistent way with the type of understory cover. Spatial structure of the forest and isolation of the host plant were of minor importance to the distribution of the PLS. Based on a series of experiments, the mechanisms underlying the effects of these environmental variables on PLS abundance were elucidated. Tall palmettos have a greater abundance of PLS because they are 2.5 times more likely to be colonized than small palmettos. Tall palmettos do not represent better hosts (in terms of PLS survival to pupation, pupal length, or risk of parasitism). Similarly, an open understory increased colonization by two-fold, relative to a shrub understory, but understory type had no effect on host quality. Wet soils greatly reduced palmetto quality as a host (survival and pupal length), but only for the smallest palmettos (,0.75 m height). -

In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists. -

Included in our review is discussion of the many contributing factors that may cause error in epide- miological estimations and in the determination of medically significant scorpion species, and we provide suggestions for future scorpion research that will aid in overcoming these errors. 1. Hodel University of California Cooperative Extension Alhambra, CA 91801, USA ABSTRACT Ornamental palms are important components of tropical, subtropical, and even warm temperate climate landscapes. In colder climates, they are important interiorscape plants and are often a focal point in malls, businesses, and other public areas. As arborescent monocots, palms have a unique morphology and this greatly influences their cultural requirements. Ornamental palms are over- whelmingly seed propagated, with seeds of most species germinating slowly and being intolerant of prolonged storage or cold temperatures. They generally do not have dormancy requirements, but do require high temperatures (30–35°C) for optimum germination. Palms are usually grown in containers prior to trans- planting into a field nursery or landscape. Because of their adventitious root system, large field-grown specimen palms can easily be transplanted. In the landscape, palm health and quality are greatly affected by nutritional deficien- cies, which can reduce their aesthetic value, growth rate, or even cause death. U.S. FishFish & & Wildlife Wildlife Service Service Moths of Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Established in 1994, the 25,000-acre Givira arbeloides Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Prionoxystus robiniae is a remnant of what was once a much Carpenterworm Moth larger, frequently flooded, bottomland hardwood forest. You are still able to Crambid Snout Moths (Crambidae) view vast expanses of ridge and swale Achyra rantalis floodplain features, numerous bayous, Garden Webworm Moth oxbow lakes, and cypress/tupelo swamps Aethiophysa invisalis along the Trinity River. It is one of Argyria lacteella only 14 priority-one bottomland sites Milky Urola Moth identified for protection in the Texas Carectocultus perstrialis Bottomland Protection Plan. Texas is Reed-boring Crambid Moth home to an estimated 4,000 species of Chalcoela iphitalis moths. Most of the nearly 400 species of Sooty-winged Chalcoela moths listed below were photographed Chrysendeton medicinalis around the security lights at the Refuge Bold Medicine Moth Headquarters building located adjacent Colomychus talis to a bottomland hardwood forest. Many Distinguished Colomychus more moths are not even attracted to Conchylodes ovulalis lights, so additional surveys will need Zebra Conchylodes to be conducted to document those Crambus agitatellus species. These forests also support a Double-banded Grass-veneer wide diversity of mammals, reptiles, Crambus satrapellus amphibians, and fish with many feeding Crocidophora tuberculalis on moths or their larvae.
