Census ‘96 Population and Dwelling Counts The following statistics are the first release from the 1996 Census of Canada which occurred on May 14, 1996. 1 Highlights ● The population of the Yukon, as enumerated by the 1996 Census, on May 14, 1996, was 30,766, just under 3,000 (10.7%) more than in 1991 (27,797). ● In 1996, 60% of the Yukon’s population lived in urban areas, almost the same as in 1991. ● The number of occupied private dwellings in the Yukon climbed to 11,584 in 1996, from 9,915 in 1991.
