Sims, commander of U.S. naval forces operating in Europe during World War I, declared, “Lieuten- ant David S. Ingalls may rightly be called the ‘Naval Ace’ of the war.”1 Of the twenty thousand pilots, observers, ground officers, mechanics, and construction workers who served overseas in the conflict, only Ingalls earned that unofficial yet esteemed status. In contrast, by November 1918, the U.S. Army Air Service counted more than 120 aces.2 The Cleveland, Ohio, native’s unique achievement resulted from several factors. -

A letter from the president FSC Is Making Entrepreneurship Part of Our Mission Whenever I speak with people about Florida Southern College, I always emphasize that our mission is to prepare the highly talented young people entrusted to us to make a positive and consequential impact on our nation and our world. The progression of research defined the themes of wartime production and wartime service. The greater Savannah community was greatly involved in wartime production through the conversion of the Port of Savannah into a military cargo port for Lend-lease goods and the development of wartime industries manufacturing paper, asphalt, naval ships, and much more. Wartime service along the waterfront included citizen soldiers and sailors volunteering in civilian and military organizations, including the Savannah-Chatham County Defense Council and the United States Coast Guard Temporary Reserve’s Volunteer Port Security Force.
