[email protected] Abstract Department of Evolutionary Genetics, Max Planck Institute for Contamination from present-day DNA is a fundamental issue when studying ancient Evolutionary Anthropology, 04103 DNA from historical or archaeological material, and quantifying the amount of Leipzig, Germany contamination is essential for downstream analyses. We present AuthentiCT, a command-line tool to estimate the proportion of present-day DNA contamination in ancient DNA datasets generated from single-stranded DNA libraries. The prediction is based solely on the patterns of post-mortem damage observed on ancient DNA sequences. The method has the power to quantify contamination from as few as 10,000 mapped sequences, making it particularly useful for analysing specimens that are poorly preserved or for which little data is available. Keywords: Contamination, Ancient DNA, Deamination, Damage patterns Background After the death of an organism, its DNA decays and is progressively lost through time [1, 2]. Under favourable conditions, DNA can preserve for hundreds of thousands of years and provide valuable information about the evolutionary history of organisms [3, 4]. Yet, only minute amounts of ancient DNA (aDNA) often remain in historical or archaeological material. In addition, most of the extracted DNA usually comes from microorganisms that spread in decaying tissues [5, 6]. Whereas microbial sequences rarely align to the reference genome used for identifying endogenous sequences if ap- propriate length cut-offs are used [7–9], contamination with DNA from closely related organisms represents a recurrent problem [10–12]. -

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the framing of family farming in the Portuguese political discourse by applying content analysis to a range of national policies and planning documents. The results show little reference to family farming in political documents and a conceptualization of family farming made in antagonism to professional or entrepreneurial farmers. Introduction Following the adhesion of Portugal to the European Economic Community (EEC) in January 1986, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was adopted by the country, which led to profound socio-economic changes in Portuguese agriculture. Among other things, a large amount of structural funds was made available to support the modernization of agriculture, to promote structural adjustment and finally to transform small family farmers into entrepreneurs. Since its beginning, CAP was designed and developed to support family farmers, the dominant typology in most Member States. As pointed out by Davidova and Thomson (2014), the government created an infrastructure that allowed small family farms to capture organisational-scale effects, without losing their specific features. -

Implemented ‘against the tide’, in the mid-1950s, with Angola’s African anti-colonial movement already under way, these schemes contained numerous contradictions. Under a modernising agenda, the Estado Novo dictatorship created the colonatos of Cela and Cunene, with the expressed purpose of reproducing Portuguese rural villages in Africa, settling poor Portuguese peasants and perpetuating colonial rule. Drawing on a range of primary sources from Portuguese colonial and scientific archives and the literature on Angola, I analyse the relationship between policymakers and the agricultural engineers mobilised to study the soils and its agricultural suitability in the regions chosen for the colonatos. -
