Agrobio is the most experienced organic agriculture association in Portugal, and have a vast experience in training, research, marketing and giving technical support to growers. In 2019, the agricultural area used in organic farming was 293 213 ha;

The area under conversion in 2019 : 20 055 ha;

The number of operators in 2019 : 6408;

Statistical data on organic farming

By crops, in 2018, pastures (58%), fodder (14.2%) and arable crops (1.3%) represented 73.5% of the total organic farming area in Portugal. In global terms, the value is overwhelming 73.5% of the total area. These crops are intended for animal production.

The production for human consumption, in 2018, remains insignificant, occupying 25% of the total area. The grove (8.3%), dry (7.85%), (1.71%), citrus fruits (0.12%) stand out, and vegetables, despite the increase of 900 ha in 2018 , only represent 1.55%.

• lack of support policies ( but we have The National Strategy and Action Plan for the Development of Organic Agriculture (2017-27);

• there are wrong and misleading support policies;

• the market has always been growing;

• there is a growing need for production for the direct and vegetable market and basic raw materials (, , pulses, etc.) for ;

• More than 72,3 million hectares of organic farmland. Globally, 1,5 perecent of the farmland is organic;

• The European Commission through the European Ecological Pact, and the the Farm To Fork ( focuses on the need to reduce the use and risk of pesticides, antibiotics and fertilizers, and increase the share of organic farming), and the Biodiversity Strategy clearly points to the need to promote organic farming and sets targets, as to achieve the objective of having 25% of the agricultural land of the occupied by Organic Farming in 2030. 33 . . • The National Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality (2050), considers Organic Agricultureas “… main driver for decarbonization…” and, it clearly states that the expansion of Organic Agriculture can enhance the reduction of greenhouse gases.;

• More recently, the Portuguese Economic and Social Recovery Plan 2020-2030 refers to “… - encouraging more ecological and sustainable agriculture” “…. - with regard to industrialized agriculture, it is urgent to rethink the model ”…;

• It is also clear the need and the desire of the Portuguese population to have healthier and more responsibly produced food (organic food), it is mentioned in the II Great Survey on Sustainability - Institute of Social Sciences / UL. 2019; 33 . . • We are in a crucial period of change in which the future Common Agricultural Policy must: increasingly aligned with the necessary ecological and energy transition and also to promote the necessary social and territorial cohesion, in which the Pandemic came to accentuate.;

• Last but not least, the recent WWF report “Covid-19: Urgent call to protect people and animals", in which be warned that the destruction of habitats for farming will lead us to more zoonoses and new pandemics, there is an urgent need to change the pattern of food production.
