Each work in the series engages two or more people in conversation about their areas of special expertise. Like all the works in the series, this one contains personal anecdotes, skill development resources, practical suggestions, career options, and "how-to" guidance—all within the language and tone of a personal conversation. Dear Friend and Colleague, All health and human service professionals write. We write client histories. We write up service activities. We write letters, memos and reports. We write policies and procedures. We write plans and grant proposals. And yet some of us aspire to a very different kind of writing. Do you feel you have perceptions and thoughts that could be of interest or benefit to others? Do you find yourself drawn to the beauty of words? Have you ever read an article or book and thought afterwards, "I could have written that." Are you drawn to stories and the meanings they contain? Do you find yourself doodling words and ideas in response to things going on around you? Have you ever tried and enjoyed writing outside the context of academic or professionally assigned work? Do you have an interest in how writers create their works? Have you ever thought about writing as a medium for personal growth or as a vehicle for service? If so, you may be one of the people we are looking for. We are looking for aspiring writers, young and old. We are looking for people without writing experience and people who may already be writing and wish to compare their experiences with those of other writers. We are looking for people who are interested in developing and refining their writing skills. If you are such a person, we invite you to join us in a detailed conversation about the writing craft and the writing life. Our motive for this invitation is simple and straightforward. The field needs writers and we want to entice you to help fill this void. This book is an invitation and an orientation to the process of writing for personal growth and professional service. It explores in detail many aspects of the writing craft and the writer's lifestyle. It discusses diverse writing forms—the journal, the professional article, the research report, the monograph, the book. The two authors, William White and Pamela Woll, have extensive experience writing within and for the substance abuse prevention and treatment fields. Bill is a Senior Research Consultant for the Lighthouse Institute in Bloomington, Illinois. Pam is Senior Writer in the Chicago office of the Illinois Prevention Resource Center, a project of Prevention First, Inc. Both discuss the development of writing skills, the craft of writing, the challenges of writing, and the many kinds of writing they have undertaken in their fields. This is not a book you have to read cover to cover. Skip and dance your way through, pausing at those areas that catch your interest. We have tried to create the feel of a late-night conversation between friends and colleagues in front of a fireplace—a blend of mutual respect, camaraderie, and warmth. So come join us to discuss the challenges, frustrations, and magic of this call to write. Use our thoughts and experiences to stimulate your own reflections. Ultimately this is a book about you and your potential as a writer. Howard (e.g., in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Yugoslavian). As former REHupan Vern Clark states: Robert E. Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Even so, there is sometimes enough enthusiasm among readers to generate fandom activities and publications. We have already covered those in France. [2] Now let’s take a look at some other countries.     tripleC 15(2): 441-458, 2017 http://www.triple-c.at Technopopulism: The Emergence of a Discursive Formation Marco Deseriis Northeastern University, Boston, USA, [email protected], http://neu.academia.edu/MarcoDeseriis Abstract: This article contends that technopopulism is a discursive formation that emerges from the convergence of two preexisting discourses: populism and technolibertarianism. Whereas these discourses are historically distinct the 2008 financial crisis and the 2011 wave of struggles precipitated the political conditions for their intersection. Such convergence produces both tensions and possibilities. On the one hand, technopopulism engenders a radically participatory model of democracy, which is ultimately anti-institutional as citizens cooperate and engage in sophisticated decision-making without the mediation of professional politicians. On the other hand, the more electorally successful technopopulist parties are led by charismatic leaders who synthesize the positions that emerge from the netroots to mobi- lize them against the establishment. These two seemingly contradictory aspects precipitate in two variants of technopopulism: a leaderless-technocratic variant, which is derived from the open source mode of governance and from early experiments of the Global Justice Movement in networked self-government; and a leaderist-populist variant, which is more strictly focused on the electoral competition as an intrinsically hegemonic practice. The article concludes with a reflection on the discursive complementarity of these two variants.     Copyright Scott Dirks, for Blues & Rhythm magazine The music of Rhythm Willie can be at once a blues harmonica fan's most exciting and most frustrating discovery. His recordings reveal a technically accomplished and musically innovative player, with few peers on the standard 10-hole Marine Band harmonica in his day. A strong case can be made for his position as the first truly urban blues harp player; at a time when the harmonica was still used in black music essentially for 'country' adornment, Rhythm Willie was utilizing it with the urbanity of a jazz trumpeter or clarinetist. Yet until recently almost nothing was known of him other than the sound of his harmonica in the grooves of a handful of rare 78s recorded in Chicago between 1939 and 1950. Overlooked by blues researchers and historians for over 40 years, mention of his name draws only blank expressions or resigned shrugs from most blues authorities. Listening for biographical clues in his music reveals virtually nothing about the artist--his only recordings as a leader were all instrumentals. Further compounding the mystery, most of Willie's appearances as an accompanist on the recordings of other blues artists are attributed to "unknown harmonica" or "possibly Lee McCoy" in published discographies (a situation which this article will examine and attempt to rectify.) In fact, given his extraordinary range and talent, referring to Rhythm Willie as simply a "blues" harmonica player might be slightly unfair, and in retrospect it's easy to imagine that Willie himself may have gone to some lengths to avoid being classified with the blues harp players he probably considered to be his musically less sophisticated country cousins.
