Would you rather pay your supplier with your own product / service or with cash? Have you ever bartered before? | Trading story Modern barter trading example... A restaurateur goes to a printer and says I would like to get my annual printing done and would like to pay you in meals. The printer says I would normally charge £10,000 for a job that size. However, he quickly realizes that’s a lot of meals and would take years to redeem. So, as a direct barter, this transaction would not take place. However, if they were both members of Bartercard and we acted as a third-party record keeper, this transaction could immediately take place. You see as soon as any business joins Bartercard they receive an interest free line of credit between T£1,000 and T£20,000 Trade Pounds. Because of the line of credit the restaurateur’s rst transaction could be a purchase. Put simply: The printers account would be credited with T£10,000 and the restaurateurs account would be debited T£10,000 this means is the restaurateur now owes T£10,000 worth of meals to the Bartercard network not to the printer. So, over a period of time brand new customers (Bartercard members) will come in and reduce his debit balance. For example: A solicitor might take a customer to lunch, an electrician treats his family to dinner, a retailer books a sta function... and the restaurateur has achieved his goal of paying his printing bill with meals. Which is what he wanted to do in the rst place. Let’s have a look at the printer for a moment. The printer has picked up a brand new customer and has been paid T£10,000 straight away. He can now spend his Trade Pounds whenever and wherever he likes within the network, instead of spending cash. The printer may spend his Trade Pounds on: Courier deliveries, legal expenses, advertising and equipment maintenance. These would be normal business cash expenses. If he could use his trade pounds to pay for these cash expenses, he would keep more cash in his business, while the printer has conserved his cash and picked up a new customer. Purchasing discount... Cash paying Bartercard paying customer customer Let’s now look at the cost eectiveness of doing business this way. Most businesses have spare capacity from time to time, don’t they? In this example, the round circles represent the restaurant tables and the people represent the restaurant’s normal cash paying customers. As you can see the restaurant has some spare capacity in empty tables. Being part of Bartercard creates new customers and helps ll up some of the empty tables. As these new customers represent only incremental business, the xed costs of the restaurant should remain the same. However, the restaurant still has the product replacement cost, i.e. the cost of the food and drinks. With this example, the industry standard for product replacement for restaurants is around 35 pence in the Pound. This means for every £100 meal the product replacement cost would be £35. So what will it eectively cost the restaurant in cash to pay for the £10,000 printing bill? If the product replacement cost is £35 for every £100 meal. Then £10,000 worth of meals would only cost the restaurant £3,500 cash. Which means by paying with meals he has saved £6,500 cash, giving the restaurant a 65% purchasing discount whenever they spend using their Bartercard. • Business-To-Business Barter Exchange: a Viable Marketplace Introduction
Business-to-business barter exchange: A Viable Marketplace Melina Young© “This revolutionary cashless system is the currency of excess business capacity.” (“Welcome to IRTA”) Introduction Business-to-business barter exchanges share many of the characteristics of social currencies (Vasconcelos Friere 2009) but most are for-profit businesses operating in the private sector and have distinct legal status at least in some jurisdictions. Much of the development in business-to-business barter exchange industry has occurred in the United States and in other countries such as Australia in the last 30 years where barter exchange is recognized in legislation. Barter credit exists as a type of sub-national instrument and barter exchange as a type of institution within the national polity. This paper is a work in progress*. It is a collection of information and thoughts gathered around the questions: What makes business-to-business barter exchange viable? How does it function? What is its public accountability? What is its relationship to the national economy? And how does it affect price stability? I was struck by Stodder's proposition that the WIR, the “medium of payment” of the WIRBank, “coexists with SFr, as a secondary or “residual” currency” (Stodder 2009:26). To extrapolate a general statement, the barter credit coexists as a secondary or residual currency with the national or primary currency, standing in where the primary currency is unavailable. If this is the case, Stodder explains, barter exchange activity would have an anti-deflationary effect. Some of the explorations in this paper dialogue with this proposition. In this paper I propose that: 1.
