    Official WANDSWORTH BOROUGH COUNCIL BUILDINGS OF SPECIAL ARCHITECTURAL OR HISTORIC INTEREST INTRODUCTION The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport is required to compile lists of buildings of special architectural or historic interest for the guidance of local planning authorities. Conservation policies are often based on the lists, which are being revised within nationally applied surveys of specific building types. How Buildings are Chosen The principles of selection for these lists were originally drawn up by an expert committee of architects, antiquarians and historians, and are still followed, although now adapted to thematic surveys and Post-War buildings. Buildings that qualify for listing are:- (a) All buildings before 1700 which survive in anything like their original condition. (b) Most buildings between 1700-1840, though some selection is necessary. (c) Between 1840 and 1914 only buildings of definite quality and character, the selection being designed to include the best examples of particular building types. (d) Selected buildings from the period after 1914 are selected on the same basis. (e) Buildings under 30 years old (but more than ten) are normally listed only if they are of outstanding quality and under threat. In choosing buildings, particular attention is paid to:- � Special value within certain types, either for architectural or planning reasons or as illustrating social and economic history (for instance, industrial buildings, railway stations, schools, hospitals, prisons, theatres). � Technological innovation or virtuosity (for instance cast iron, prefabrication, or the early use of concrete). � Group value, especially as examples of town planning (for instance, squares, terraces or model estates). � Association with well-known characters or events.

    1 The Burial Grounds of Putney London SW15 Introduction The chronology of Putney’s burial grounds is broadly as follows: St Mary’s Church, Putney Bridge: 12th/13th century to 1763. Putney Old Burial Ground (POBG), Upper Richmond Road: 1763 to 1854. Putney Lower Common Cemetery (PLCC), Mill Hill Road: 1855 to 1891. Putney Vale Cemetery (PVC), Kingston Road: 1891 to present. Closure dates are nominal and burials took place later, e.g. in family graves or in special circumstances. They continued at St Mary’s, in the churchyard (in large numbers) until 1854 and inside the church until 1863; in POBG until 1900; and in PLCC until the 1950s – even as late as 1975. St Mary’s Church The parish church was Putney’s only burial 1797 ground for some 500 years. St Mary’s is not mentioned by name until c. 1290, though there may have been a church or chapel of ease (a satellite of St Mary’s Wimbledon) on the site as early as the 12th century. Nothing remains of those early churches and the oldest part of the present building is the tower, which dates from c. 1450. St Mary’s was severely damaged by a storm in 1703, was rebuilt, apart from the tower, in 1836, and extensively damaged by an arson-started fire during the night of 6th/7th June 1973, with only the walls, columns and, again, the 15th century tower surviving. Rebuilding, to a design by Ronald Sims, with the altar, unusually, on the north side and stained glass by Alan Younger (who also designed the stained glass above the entrance to Putney Exchange) was completed in 1982.

    GeneralTransport Information Local Information Getting to the Fields: This venue is very easy to reach by public transport. Get a train to Putney station or a tube to East Putney. If you go to East Putney station, you need to walk towards Putney High street to find Putney station and the bus. Come out of East Putney tube and turn left. Walk along Upper Richmond Road until you reach a large set of traffic lights at a cross road. Turn right and you will see Putney train station and the bus stop on your right. Map below. http://tinyurl.com/329zqqk Directly outside of Putney station on the same side of the road, is a bus stop where the 85 heads straight to the fields. Get on the 85 and it will head out of Putney and onto the back roads alongside the A3 dual carriageway. Stay on the bus until it reaches a T junction with the A3. It will turn right here and then you need to wait until the bus has passed Asda supermarket and Texaco on the left and get off at the Roehampton Campus stop. The fields are there on your left. http://tinyurl.com/34ucywm You can get to Putney quickly from Clapham Junction, Vauxhall, Waterloo and also to Putney East on the District line (Green). You should be able to reach the grounds easily from places like Kingston (e.g. using the #85 in the opposite direction) and Wimbledon but please check. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ Planned Engineering Works: It seems that there are no real problems on the lines that will be used by people attending this event.
