As of today, seven Discovery channels are scheduled to go dark on 30 June, with the newly acquired four-channel Scripps bouquet headed into the abyss at the end of August. Discovery says it has already been for- mally notified by StarHub that its channels are not being renewed. In a response this morning, StarHub didn’t mention any formal notice, saying only that “we are in renewal negotia- tions... and we are doing everything pos- sible to arrive at a deal which would allow Discovery and StarHub to continue our partnership while offering our customers the same content at a reasonable price”. StarHub isn’t coming into this public fight with no firepower, saying it is acquiring fresh content to replace Discovery “in the event that negotiations prove unsuc- cessful”. Several new channels are in the works “to ensure our customers will continue to enjoy access to a good range of educa- tion and lifestyle channels,” StarHub says. However, operators beyond the top 100 will gain subscribers over the same period. Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Most industries consolidate as they mature. The pay TV sector is doing the opposite – fragmenting. Most of the subscriber growth will take place in developing countries where operators are not controlled by larger corporations.” By end-2020, 13 operators had more than 10 million pay TV subscribers. China and India will continue to dominate the top pay TV operator rankings, partly as their subscriber bases climb but also due to the US operators losing subscribers. Between 2020 and 2026, 307 of the 503 operators (61%) will gain subscribers, with 13 showing no change and 183 losing subscribers (36%). In 2020, 28 pay TV operators earned more than $1 billion in revenues, but this will drop to 24 operators by 2026. The Global Pay TV Operator Forecasts report covers 503 operators with 726 platforms [132 digital cable, 116 analog cable, 279 satellite, 142 IPTV and 57 DTT] across 135 countries.

Lescure and Yep: Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 3, Edition 2 (Spring 2015): Queer Media Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations of Sexuality Overview and Rationale With a focus on aging sexual minorities, a population often overlooked by both queer theory and mediated representations, this classroom activity invites students to critically examine the intersection of queerness and television. First, students will get a brief introduction to queer theory and dialectical thinking. Second, students will view the made-for-television HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Third, students will engage in a queer dialectical analysis of the intersection of queerness and aging in the TV program. Influenced by poststructuralism, critical theory, feminism, and cultural studies, queer theory provides an open theoretical system to view, understand, and analyze social relations (Berlant & Warner, 1995; Jagose, 1996; Yep, 2003). More specifically, queer theory is both a conceptual model and a set of analytical tools to deconstruct power relations (i.e., the ways power functions and operates in our relationships) and the violence of normativity (i.e., the potentially harmful effects of social norms on bodies, identities, and communities) (Yep & Schönfeldt-Aultman, 2012).

To be qualified to compete, an SBRW crew must include at least two (2) US Vets. The standings will be based on the each boat’s scores in SBRW. Boats will self-certify as to the number of Vets in their crew and that they want to be included in the competition for the PATRIOT CUP. The winner of the Patriot Cup competition will be determined by US Patriot Sailing and will win the PATRIOT CUP trophy, presented at the final SBRW awards ceremony Sunday. A Vet is anyone who is on active duty or reserve duty or has previous service (active or reserve) in the Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Given the number of Vets who skipper and crew in the Hampton Roads area and beyond and the number of them entered already in SBRW, the competition looks to be “fierce friendly”.
