Probably the most popular flight training aircraft in the world, the first production models were delivered in 1957, and it is still in production in 2005; more than 35,000 have been built. The Skyhawk's main competitors have been the popular Piper Cherokee, the rarer Beechcraft Musketeer (no longer in production), and, more recently, the Cirrus SR22. The Skyhawk is ubiquitous throughout the Americas, Europe and parts of Asia; it is the aircraft most people visualize when they hear the words "small plane." More people probably know the name Piper Cub, but the Skyhawk's shape is far more familiar. The 172 was a direct descendant of the Cessna 170, which used conventional (taildragger) landing gear instead of tricycle gear. Early 172s looked almost identical to the 170, with the same straight aft fuselage and tall gear legs, but later versions incorporated revised landing gear, a lowered rear deck, and an aft window. Cessna advertised this added rear visibility as "Omnivision". The final structural development, in the mid-1960s, was the sweptback tail still used today. The airframe has remained almost unchanged since then, with updates to avionics and engines including (most recently) the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit. -

However, World War II gave it a welcome momentum which led to more than 1,600 artillery spotter Austers being built for the British and other air forces. The Rearsby factory was at maximum production during the war - but, as with all other aircraft manufacturing plants, it found a sudden collapse in military orders when peace came. However, there were returning flyers keen to keep their skills alive and the Autocrat and its successors were successful, not only in the UK but also across the world. Using the same basic airframe, the Auster constantly changed its shape and the 180hp Husky of 1960 was a very different animal from the original 55hp Taylorcraft Model C. Austers were sold all over the world and were used for many tasks including crop spraying, aerial advertising and joyriding. The company also developed new models including the very successful AOP.9, and the less successful Agricola, Atlantic and Avis. -

Leeker First published on 23 August 2010, last updated on 24 August 2015 1) Within the family: The Pacific Corporation and its parts In a file called “Air America - cooperation with other airlines”, one might first think of Civil Air Transport Co Ltd or Air Asia Co Ltd. These were not really other airlines, however, but part of the family that had been created in 1955, when the old CAT Inc. had received a new corporate structure. On 28 February 55, CAT Inc transferred the Chinese airline services to Civil Air Transport Company Limited (CATCL), which had been formed on 20 January 55, and on 1 March 55, CAT Inc officially transferred the ownership of all but 3 of the Chinese registered aircraft to Asiatic Aeronautical Company Limited, selling them to Asiatic Aeronautical (AACL) for one US Dollar per aircraft.1 The 3 aircraft not transferred to AACL were to be owned by and registered to CATCL – one of the conditions under which the Government of the Republic of China had approved the two-company structure.2 So, from March 1955 onwards, we have 2 official owners of the fleet: Most aircraft were officially owned by Asiatic Aeronautical Co Ltd, which changed its name to Air Asia Co Ltd on 1 April 59, but three aircraft – mostly 3 C-46s – were always owned by Civil Air Transport Co Ltd. US registered aircraft of the family like C-54 N2168 were officially owned by the holding company – the Airdale Corporation, which changed its name to The Pacific Corporation on 7 October 57 – or by CAT Inc., which changed its name to Air America on 3 31 March 59, as the organizational chart of the Pacific Corporation given below shows. -

An aircraft counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil, or in a few cases the downward thrust from jet engines.[1] Although rockets and missiles also travel through the atmosphere, most are not considered aircraft because they use rocket thrust instead of aerodynamics as the primary means of lift. However, rocket planes and cruise missiles are considered aircraft because they rely on lift from the air. The human activity which surrounds aircraft is called aviation. Manned aircraft are flown by an onboard pilot. Unmanned aerial vehicles may be remotely controlled or self-controlled by onboard computers. Target drones are an example of UAVs. Aircraft may be classified by different criteria, such as lift type, propulsion, usage and others. -

Short SC.7 Skyvan The Short SC.7 Skyvan (nicknamed the "Flying Shoebox")[2] is a SC.7 Skyvan British 19-seat twin-turboprop aircraft manufactured by Short Brothers of Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is used mainly for short- haul freight and skydiving. The Short 330 and Short 360 are stretched models of the original SC.7, designed as regional airliners. Miles Ltd (successor company to Miles Aircraft) which was seeking backing to produce a development of the H.D.M.106 Caravan design with a high aspect ratio wing similar to that of the Hurel-Dubois HD.31. Shorts acquired the design and data gathered from trials of the Miles Aerovan based H.D.M.105 prototype. After evaluating the Miles proposal, Shorts rejected the Caravan.[3] They developed their own design for a utility all-metal aircraft which was called the Short SC.7 Skyvan. The Skyvan is a twin-engined all-metal, high-wing monoplane, with a braced, high aspect ratio wing, and an unpressurised, square-section fuselage with twin fins and rudders.[4] It was popular with freight operators compared to other small aircraft because of its large rear door for loading and unloading freight. -

The Early Years of Bushflying With the advent of war in 1914, there were few registered pilots in Canada, and even fewer aircraft. Flying was a novelty of the well-to-do, and certainly, the daring. But over the next five years, young Canadian men would come to comprise almost one-third of the British air services. For many, it was an opportunity to escape the horrors of the trenches – the mud, cold, rats, lice and the ever-ominous threat of a horrible death. It was a chance to take to the pristine blue skies, with the wind in your face and a silk scarf round your neck trailing in the breeze. But there is little glamour in warfare of any kind. And many paid an exacting price. While the airplanes kept them out of the trenches, it posed its own threats. There were no parachutes. A pilot was strapped into a flimsy, wood-framed, fabric-covered aircraft that was held together with bolts and wire and sealed with layers of flammable dope and paint. In many cases, the fuel tank was directly beneath the seat. Should their worst fear be realized – fire – a pilot had few choices. He could attempt to ride the burning craft to the ground and hope he survived the ultimate crash. He could escape a fiery death by jumping from the aircraft, but without a parachute, the end was not in doubt. Or, he could take out his service revolver and shoot himself. None of the options afforded much hope. It is little wonder that the average lifespan of a WW1 fighter pilot was 17 flying hours. -

Appendix A: Methodology for the 2013 General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey APPENDIX A METHODOLOGY FOR THE 2013 GENERAL AVIATION AND PART 135 ACTIVITY SURVEY Purpose of Survey The General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey (GA Survey) provides the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with information on general aviation and on-demand Part 135 aircraft activity. The survey enables the FAA to monitor the general aviation fleet so that it can anticipate and meet demand for National Airspace System (NAS) facilities and services, assess the impact of regulatory changes on the fleet, and implement measures to assure the safe operation of all aircraft in the NAS. The data are also used by other government agencies, the general aviation industry, trade associations, and private businesses to identify safety problems and to form the basis for research and analysis of general aviation issues. Background and History Prior to the first implementation of the annual GA Survey in 1978, the FAA used the Aircraft Registration Eligibility, Identification, and Activity Report (AC Form 8050-73) to collect data on general aviation activity. The form was sent annually to all owners of civil aircraft in the United States and served two purposes: a) Part 1 was the mandatory aircraft registration revalidation form; and b) Part 2 was voluntary and applied to general aviation aircraft only, asking questions on the owner-discretionary characteristics of the aircraft such as flight hours, avionics equipment, base location, and use. The FAA used this information to estimate aircraft activity. In 1978, the FAA replaced AC Form 8050-73 with a new system. -
