Team Ontario – Week One Summary Performance at the 2013 Canada Summer Games August 12, 2013 – Sherbrooke, Quebec Team Ontario – Week One Summary Performance at the 2013 Canada Summer Games August 12, 2013 – Sherbrooke, Quebec The first week of competition of the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec has now come to a close for Team Ontario. At the mid-way point, Ontario is the leader in terms of medal count and flag point count for the 2013 Canada Summer Games. The first week of the 2013 Canada Games featured competition in baseball, basketball, cycling, soccer, sailing, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Below is a summary of Team Ontario’s performance during week one competitions. Basketball – Men’s Team Ontario men's basketball capped off an impressive week of play with a 93-49 win over Team Manitoba to capture the gold medal. The victory earns team captain, Brody Clarke, a place in the history books as the only Canadian basketball player ever to win four gold medals at this level of competition through a combination of national championship and multi-sport events. Not only did men's basketball perform well on the court they also personified what the Canada Games are all about off the court. The team was often spotted at various competition venues supporting their fellow teammates with catchy song and dance routines. The team even went a step further, especially team manager Warren Williams, by using social media (Twitter) every spare moment of each day which significantly increased Team Ontario's profile. Although the team has departed from the games their Tweets are still flowing at steady pace containing reminisce about their week one experiences and providing words of encouragement for week two sports. Baseball Team Ontario went through the round robin with a 3-3 record good enough for second place in their division. A seventh inning comeback against Quebec erased a three run deficit for the win in their first game. Team Ontario faced Alberta in the semi-finals and defeated them 3-1 on a strong pitching performance by Zach Pop with Mitchell Bigras getting the save. Colin Robinson accounted for all the runs with three runs batted in. In the final against a strong BC team, a disappointing first inning put our team in a 5-0 deficit which ended up being the final score. Overall, the team got better as the tournament rolled on and they deserved to be in the final earning the silver medal for Ontario. Cycling - Mountain Bike Mountain biking at this edition of the Canada Summer Games featured a number of firsts. This was the first time mountain biking athletes were not required to compete in the road cycling events and two new competitions, the team relay and sprints, were added increasing the spectators’ enjoyment of his event. Coached by Mike Garrigan and Jenny Trew, mountain bike athletes Laura Bietola and Mitch Bailey placed second and third respectively in the cross country event. In the debut of the team relay event at Canada Games for mountain bike, Ontario captured gold for women and silver for men. Bietola medaled in all three mountain bike events also capturing a silver in the first ever sprint event at Canada Games. Team Ontario – Week One Summary Page 1 Sailing Sailors in the 29er class showed promise early in the week and continued with strong performances right to the end earning gold medals in both the men and women events. The men’s and women’s Radial Laser sailors had some tough races early in the week but fought back late winning a bronze medal in the women’s event. Our male athlete in the Radial tied for third place and through a tie-breaker system our male athlete finished in fourth place. All para sailing athletes from across the country were marvelous on the water with our Ontario athlete winning a bronze in the 2.4 meter class. Everyone performed well and they were outstanding ambassadors for the sport. The host society provided a great experience and a well-run venue including fantastic volunteers. Soccer – Women’s The women’s soccer team, comprised of mostly 16 and 17 year old players, earned a bronze medal and enjoyed the developmental experience in competing against older players at the Canada Games. Some of the players are in the national pool for U17 and U20 level, so these are the up-and-coming athletes for the sport. All the athletes left immediately following the games to go to the Ontario Cup tournament where they will be competing against each other playing for their home teams. Softball The softball athletes were great ambassadors for Team Ontario exemplified by their willingness to lend a hand and to enthusiastically cheer on other sports throughout week one. Even before the games, the team spontaneously chipped in to help clean tables at our June training camp. Softball had a soggy start to the week with many rain delays including a 2 to 1 win over Team Quebec which ended at 1a.m. After this long day, the team went on to defeat Team BC 7 to 5 in the next game of regular play. After a hard rain and a long delay while the volunteer grounds crew renovated the field, our team gave the volunteers a standing ovation when they hit the field which was greatly appreciated by all and demonstrated the character of this team. There was a three-way tie in Ontario’s division and when the tie breaking rule was applied we ended up in third place in the tournament and faced a determined Team BC who defeated Ontario 3 to O in the elimination round. Swimming The swimmers started the week with a bang, winning a number of medals on the first day including gold medals for Teddy Kalp in the men's 800m freestyle, Alec Elliot and Alicia Denoon in the men's and women's para 200m/400m freestyle, and both of the 4x200m freestyle relays. On Tuesday the swimmers kept up the strong performances and excellent results. The first multi-medal event of the week went to Erin Stamp and Genevieve Robertson in the women's 50m breaststroke, where they took home the silver and bronze medals. Also in the 50m breaststroke, Cassidy Tran placed first in the women's Special Olympics event to give Ontario three medals in 50m breast stroke events. Other medals came from Mitchel Ferraro (bronze), Victoria Chan (gold), Kennedy Goss (bronze), Sidney Chilwell (bronze), Evan White (gold), Gamal Assaad (silver), Tristan Cote (silver), Evan White (bronze), and gold in both men's and women's 4x50m freestyle relays. Wednesday was probably the strongest day in the pool for Team Ontario in the pool. Medals came from the following swimmers: Eli Wall (silver), Erin Stamp (gold), Genevieve Robertson (bronze), Evan White (gold), Eddie Liu (silver), Alec Elliot (gold), Alicia Denoon (gold), Jeff Swanston (silver), Meryn McCann (gold), Danielle Hanus (silver), Teddy Kalp (silver), Kennedy Goss (gold), Victoria Chan (bronze), gold in Team Ontario – Week One Summary Page 2 the women's 5x50m medley relay, and silver in the men's 4x50m medley relay. Thursday was the final day in the pool for the swimmers, and Team Ontario held a strong lead going into the final day of indoor swimming. That said, they continued to add to their medal tally, as the swimmers were swimming personal bests and set Canada Games records. Swimmers winning medals included: Jeff Swanston (gold), Danielle Hanus (gold), Kennedy Goss (bronze), Victoria Chan (silver), Skylar Tierney (silver), Sydney Chilwell (silver), Alec Elliot (gold), Evan White (gold), Austin Smith (bronze), Samantha Stratford (silver), Teddy Kalp (silver), and gold in both of the 4x100m medley relays. Friday was a day outdoors for the open water swimming event. Ontario fielded a male and a female swimmer, Oliver Straszynski and Esraa Abdel Khalik. Oliver and Esraa were profiled earlier in the week by the Canadian Press and were excited to swim the open water competition. All of the other swimmers made their way to Lac Memphremagog to cheer on their teammates and the weather was optimal for performance - cool, cloudy, and very calm waters. Oliver started first in the men's competition and executed an almost perfect plan of attack. He drafted most of the race with three other swimmers in the lead pack, and made a break for the gold in the final 350 metres. Unfortunately, the breaks didn't work out quite as planned, and Oliver was fourth out of a four-swimmer sprint to the finish. On the women's side, Esraa Abdel Khalik swam consistently in the fourth place, often behind the lead group of three but always ahead of the rest of the pack. Esraa swam a strong solo race and also raced to a fourth place finish. In all, Team Ontario hauled in a grand total of 32 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals for a total of 63 medals! The relays were especially strong, as Ontario finished first in seven of eight relays and silver in the eighth. TSN did a special on Teddy Kalp and his coach, Murray Drudge, as well as a live interview with 5 multiple medalists during halftime of the men's gold medal basketball game. As a sign of appreciation for the Host Society, on the final night of competition, the swimming team wore special shirts that said 'Merci Sherbrooke' on the back. Tennis The tennis team had an outstanding week at the tennis venue in Rock Forest Recreation Centre, taking a total of three gold medals and a silver in the five-day competition. Team Ontario captured the team gold, defeating Team BC in the final, 4 games to 2.
