Fact Sheet 2017 Canada Summer Games 2017 Canada Summer Games Winnipeg, Manitoba July 28 to August 13, 2017 www.2017canadagames.ca • This is the second time the Canada Summer Games have been hosted in Manitoba after Brandon hosted in 1997. • 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games and it is also the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. • 4000 athletes • 860 coaches, team managers and support staff • 13 Teams: ten provinces and three territories Team BC • Team BC brings together the best athletes, coaches, managers, and mission staff to represent British Columbia at the Canada Winter Games and Canada Summer Games. • Team BC athletes are the best young developing talent in their sport and being part of Team BC is a key multi-sport games development opportunity towards competing at national and international levels. • Team BC includes 455 people including 354 athletes, 52 coaches, 27 managers and technical supporters, and 22 mission staff. • The flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony is soccer athlete Emma Regan of Burnaby • Team BC will be led by Chef de Mission, Rob Needham, and Assistant Chefs de Mission, Michelle Collens and Eric Chéné. Sports • Athletes are at the Train to Train Stage of the Long Term Athlete Development Model • 16 official sports including: athletics, baseball, basketball, canoe kayak, cycling, diving, golf, rowing, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, triathlon, volleyball (indoor and beach), and wrestling. • Competition for athletes with a disability will take place in athletics, sailing and swimming. • Team BC Coaches must be fully certified NCCP Level 3 Certified or the equivalent in the NCCP Competition stream. • 57% of Team BC athletes and coaches are BC Games alumni have competed at the BC Winter or BC Summer Games, giving them an advantage of a previous multi-sport games experience. Mission Staff • Mission staff are volunteers selected from experts in the sport, recreation, and health services sectors to provide administration support to the Provincial Sport Organizations, coaches and managers, and Team BC leading up to and at the Games. • Team BC mission staff won the Claude Hardy Award which is presented in recognition of a provincial or territorial team in recognition of leadership, cooperation, integrity, and esprit de corps at the 2013 Canada Summer Games and 2015 Canada Winter Games. Alumni The Canada Summer Games are a stepping stone to national teams and international competitions like the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Team BC alumni include: • Ryan Cochrane, Swimming (Victoria), Olympic Bronze and Silver Medallist o Team BC Honourary Captain for the 2017 Canada Summer Games • Steve Nash, Basketball (Victoria), Two-time MVP of the NBA • Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, Rowing (Victoria), 2016 Olympic Silver Medallists • Dylan Armstrong, Athletics (Kamloops), 2008 Olympic Bronze Medallist • Liz Gleadle, Athletics (Vancouver), 2016 Olympian • Hilary Caldwell, Swimming (White Rock), 2016 Olympic Bronze Medallist Past Results - 2013 Canada Summer Games • Team BC finished third behind Ontario and Quebec at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke with 122 medals - 47 gold, 36 silver, and 39 bronze. • 176 (42%) of the 442 Team BC athletes (competing in BC Games sports) were B.C. alumni accounting for 86 (70%) of Team BC medals. • 48 B.C. electoral ridings had at least one medalist at the Games and 36 ridings had multiple medalists. Funding and Operations • The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture provides annual funding to the Team BC program. • BC Games Society manages the operations of Team BC (e.g. training Mission staff, logistics of getting the team to the Games and back).
