Palaiologos had to reward him for his assistance in the fights against anti-emperor Johannes VI. Kantakuzenos. 1376 he could occupy Ainos and he installed Giorgio Name unknown his brother Niccolo I. as regent there. Francesco I. and his sons Andronico and Domenico died in an earthquake on 6.8.1384 on the island of ? - 1449 Lesbos. LESBOS: The 14 year old son Jocopo followed as Archon of Lesbos and choose the name Franceso II. In 1388 and 1391 Francesco II. participated in the campaigns against the Ottomans and also survived the lost battle of Nikopolis in 1396. His son Jacopo reigned over Lesbos Dorino II. 1465 Elisabette Criso from 1403/4 until 1428. Dorino I. followed the childless brother. From the already weak emperor of Byzantine Johannes VIII. he got the territory of ? - after 1488 daughter of the islands of Thasos and Lemnos. When the Byzanz extincted in 1453, he got tributary to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. and had to hand over Despot of Ainos 1455-1456 Giacomo II. Crispo of Naxos Thasos to the Ottomans. When his brother Niccolo was overthrown as Despot of Lesbos due to an rebellion of the inhabitants, Nicollo came in 1458 to Lesbos, sent his brother Domenico I. to prison and later let him strangle and took over the position as Archon of Lesbos. In 1462 Ottoman Marino Doria troups ravaged Lesbos. After 27 days of siege fell the fortification of Mytilene and Nicollo II. had to surrender to the Ottomans. After 107 years the Caterina rulership of the family of Gattilusio over Lesbos ended. Nicolo II. reached Istanbul on 16.10.1462 and tried to negotiate and even converted to Islam. Whithout success. At the end of 1462 he got strangled on the orders of the sultanultan shortly after his cousin Luchino was sent to death. AINOS: When Niccolo I. died childless in 1409, the grandson of his brother Palamede became his successor. There isn't much known about Palmede. After his death in 1455 his son Dorino II. took regency because his older brother Giorgio had already died in 1499. However, the wife of Ginevra Lodovico Fregoso Giorgio claimed the heir for her sons and therefore devoted to the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II for help. The Ottomans seized the opportunitiy and ? - 1489 von Genua took in 1456 first possession of Ainos and then of Imbros. Finally the Ottomans turned to Samothraki, where Dorino II. stayed at this time. Doge Negotiations with the Mehmed II. failed and the rule of the Gattilusios of Ainos ended 1457 with the surrender of the island of Samothraki. Dorino II. came to Macedonia placed under house arrest but could escape to Naxos in 1460. The Gattilusj of Lesbos (1355—1462). «Me clara Caesar donat Leebo ac Mytilene, Caesar, qui Graio praesidet iraperio'. Corsi apud Folieta The Genoese occupation of Chios, Lesbos, and Phokaia by the families of Zaccaria and Cattaneo was not forgotten in the counting- houses of the Ligurian Republic. In 1346, two years after the capture of Smyrna, Chios once more passed under Genoese control, the two Foglie followed suite, and in 1355 the strife between John Cantacuzene and John V Palaiologos for the throne of Byzantium enabled a daring Genoese, Francesco Gattilusio, to found a dynasty in Lesbos, which gradually extended its branches to the islands of the Thracian sea and to the city of Ainos on the opposite mainland, and which lasted in the original seat for more than a Century. Disappointed in a previous attempt to recover his rights, the young Emperor John V was at this time living in retirement on the island of Tenedos, then a portion of the Greek Empire and from its position at the mouth of the Dardanelles both an excellent post of obserration and a good base for a descent upon Constantinople. During his so- journ there, a couple of Genoese galleys arrived, commanded by Fran- cesco Gattilusio, a wealthy freebooter, who had sailed from his native oity to onrvp rmt for himself, annidst the confusion of the Orient, a petty principality in the Thracian Chersonese, äs others of his compa- triots had twice done in Chios, äs the Venetian nobles had done in the Archipelago 150 years earlier. The Emperor found in this chance visi- tor an Instrument to effect his own restoration; the two men came to terms, and John V promised, that if Gattilusio would help him to recover his throne, he would bestow upon him the hand of his sister Maria — an honour similar to that conferred by Michael VIII upon Benedetto Zaccaria.

I RACCONTI DI ZIO (ZIO’S NEWS), Pallavicino Family: Issue 31, May 1494 News from Genoa. The port of Genoa is always rife with news and rumor, but never more so than since the return of Paolo di Battista I Fregoso (right), its controversial Cardinal Archbishop. Most Italians remember how Fregoso, who had served several terms as Doge, was forced from office in 1488 by a popular rebellion, which called in the Regent of Milan, Ludovico Maria (il Moro) Sforza. Under il Moro, Milan took an active role in governing Genoa. Fregoso was forced into exile, since his abrasive personality had alienated both his people and the Regent. During the last month, Fregoso has reappeared in Genoa. After a gap of six years, he claims to be Doge, although no election has been held. The young Sforza Duke, Gian Galeazzo, who has recently taken the reins of power in Milan, has apparently reversed his uncle’s policy towards Genoa and seems inclined to accept Fregoso’s grab for control. Fregoso is an interesting figure, part of the extended family of Campofregoso who have contributed many Doges to the Genoese Republic. He first served in 1462, but was ousted after 15 days. The following year after a feud with his cousin, Doge Lodovico Campofregoso, he again became Doge. He imprisoned Lodovico and attacked the Adorno family. A year later the Council of the Elders deposed him, accepting the protection of the House of Sforza, which lasted until 1477. In 1480 he was named cardinal, and served as the Pope’s admiral against the Turks.

E R I T A G ··E.· Journa{ of tfze frencft-Caruufian 1-ftritage Society of Micftigan . ' Vol. 28 #2 Apr. 2007 Correction of Catherine Baillon's Grimaldi Ancestry John P. DuLong, FCHSM member ([email protected]) Many French Canadians descend from the noble lady Catherine Baillon and through her they have ancestors far removed from the cold shores of the St. Lawrence. Among her medieval Franco-Italian ancestors who once basked in the warmth of the Mediterranean are the Grimaldis. In the Table d'ascendance de Catherine Bail/on (12 generations) two Grimaldi descents for Catherine Baillon are presented. 1 The first goes through the Grimaldi of Beuil family and the second is through the Grimaldi of Antibes family. 2 While the former stands intact, the latter is in need of correction. In the ninth generation of Catherine Baillon's ancestry she descends from Rainier Lascaris, count of Vintimille and co-seigneur of La Briga and Limone. He was the son of Ludovic (or Louis) Lascaris, count ofVintimille, and Tiburge Grimaldi de Beuil. Rainier was married around 1400-1403 to Madeleine Grimaldi, the daughter of Luc Grimaldi and Yolande Grimaldi, whose parents, and thus her relationship to Luc, are unknown. Luc was the brother of Marc Grimaldi, with whom he shared the seigneuries of Antibes, Cagnes, and Menton. 3 It is well established that Luc and Marc were the sons of Antoine Grimaldi who was married to Catherine Doria. 4 The issue is who are the parents of Antoine Grimaldi? In the Table d'ascendance de Catherine Bail/on (12 generations) the answer to this question is that Antoine Grimaldi was the son of Rainier I Grimaldi, the founder of the family that eventually became the princes of Monaco.

• The Apogee of the Hispano-Genoese Bond, 1576-1627
Sistema financiero. Galeras. Revuelta de 1575. ABSTRACT: The half century between 1576 and 1627 witnessed the most intense relations between the Republic of Genoa and Spain. This period, clearly demarcated at both its beginning and ending points, was ushered in by a brief war in Genoa accompanied by royal insolvency in Spain, and brought to a close by fighting in northern Italy and another quiebra in Spain.

For ease of indexing we have given them a letter designation. The books included in this first installment include: Notes: Date given is death date if know, otherwise it might be burial date, date plot was purchased or date at the top of the page. In the case of removals from one cemtery to another the date is given in the notes column to avoid confusion over death dates. In the case of stillbirths and infants, the name given might be that of a parent, the records were often not clear. Remember, this is an index not an extraction, the actual record is likely to contain additional information, including who is responsible for payment, some societies the individual belonged to, names of newspapers where notices were places, and in some journals prior to 1920 obituaries might be attached. There is some duplication in the records, some of the Journal were most likely copied to the later books. We chose to include both because these were the years that might also have attached obituaries. When requesting a copy from the Colma Historical Society, be sure to copy the book volume and page number carefully.

  • International Relations and the Colonial System in Medieval Genoa
International Relations and the Colonial System in Medieval Genoa Gabriella AIRALDI Some hundreds of settlements in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Europe and the Atlantic islands are already testimony to the presence of Genoese in the world in the Middle Ages. However, they do not cover all examples of the phenomenal expansion which Columbus’ journey isn’t the conclusion of, but the continuation of a phenomenon of particular and extensive contact and migration. It is a system of relations and international presence which is completely different from that of Venice, often remembered by analogy, from which it differs in the most part by action and the methods and tools used. In fact, its spatial width is certainly much greater than that of Venice, and it is totally immune from state intervention, which exists in Venice. The expansion of the Genoese, in fact, develops instead on the basis of strategic action by private or public- private according to formulas that differ considerably, but complement the operation of a network designed to ensure maximum operational flexibility. For the medieval Genoese international relations and settlement systems are inseparable elements. Note the use of the word “Genoese” and not the word “Genoa”. In the last century, Roberto Lopez, an important medieval historian, was the first to report the importance of this distinction, which stems from an original story, which you will see, I hope, later in this speech. In the eleventh century, Genoa, a city that neither then nor in subsequent centuries exceeds a population of 100,000, undergoes a major political metamorphosis that permanently transformed the most important Mediterranean port, and European stronghold and enhances its role as the most “Atlantic” of Italian cities.
