4 What Happens When Wang Yangming Crosses the Border? Timothy Brook The emperors of the Ming dynasty ruled a bounded territory. There might be occasional doubt as to where exactly the border ran in places where the terrain was rough and the state’s ability to control local populations weak. But everyone understood that borders existed, and all who served the Ming understood that imperial sovereignty extended only that far and not an inch beyond. A border marked a clear break between the order that Chinese sovereignty was thought to create and the disorder that its absence must imply. Being at the edge of sovereignty, where one thing became another, borderlands were places where sovereignty was difficult to enforce, where control required more stringent enforcement than was necessary elsewhere, and where administrative operations had to permit innovations and com- promises that were unacceptable in the heartland. Borderlands were trou- bling to rule-enforcers; they were also politically dangerous for those faced with adjusting heartland rules to conditions in the periphery. This chapter is about one instance of alleged border-crossing in a Ming borderland and the great political excitement that this allegation caused. Wang Shouren (1472-1529), better known by his sobriquet Yangming, was not only the most innovative philosopher of the Ming dynasty but one of its leading field administrators. His experience of dealing with civil dis- turbance and armed revolt, notably his suppression in 1519 of the rebellion of the Prince of Ning, Zhu Chenhao (d. 1521), in Jiangxi province endowed him with a reputation as a trouble-shooter. -

114 Chapter 3 Chapter 3 The Prince and the Sage As of early 1519 Wang Yangming was still residing in southern Jiangxi. As grand coordinator and vice-censor in chief, he was the highest official in this region, responsible for effecting measures to maintain peace and security after nearly two years of campaigning. He was, however, petitioning to leave office, for he suffered from chronic illness and wished to visit his aging father. But his re- quests were repeatedly denied, for his ardent supporter at the head of the Min- istry of War—Wang Qiong—wanted him to stay put. Having long suspected that a much more serious threat loomed over the Ming dynasty, he needed Wang Yangming to counter it. Indeed, this unsettling issue was very likely the real reason the minister had helped Wang Yangming gain broader discretion- ary powers—and the title of superintendent of military affairs—in the first place, something Wang Yangming was well aware of.1 This threat was the Prince of Ning Zhu Chenhao 寧王朱宸濠 (1478–1521), the great-great-grandson of the Ming dynasty’s founding emperor’s seventeenth son, Prince Xian of Ning.2 Though the prince lived during roughly the same period as Wang Yangming, he led a very different life: as imperial nobility, he would have been allowed to reside in (and was largely confined to) one of the many princely establish- ments granted to senior lines descended from the founding emperor’s chil- dren. However, not unlike certain other princes in the history of the Ming, the Prince of Ning harbored high aspirations.3 But being already a prince, what higher status could he achieve? 1 Huang, “Shi de ji,” 38:1416. -

Our intention behind creating this new journal is to allow the entire aca- demic world to better understand and observe China, to allow all scholars to follow the academic trends happening within China, to provide scholars with a way to stay abreast of the current thought and research coming out of China. If we are successful in providing such service to the reader, we have become what we sought out to be: an intellectual bridge between China and her out- side observers, in other words, a bridge between those who study China and the China that they study. It is important to understand China. China is not only ascending to the world stage, but also solidifying her central position on that stage. And as has been the case every time a new power emerges, the world order changes with it. There is no reason to believe that China’s ascension will be any different. China has had an increasing presence and influence on world affairs over the last few decades, but this has not changed the fact that, in the eyes of too many, China and all that her long culture entails remain a mystery. It is ironic that a nation so large can remain behind a cloud mystery for so long, yet China never ceases to confound and astound the outside world in what it has achieved and how it has endured. -

Through the prism of its intellectual community of Cheng-Zhu Confucian scholars, this dissertation provides insights into the relationship between the literati elite and the locale which they helped to construct and they represented. It argues that the Quanzhou scholars had a dual-identity: as scholar-officials and as scholar-gentries. As the former, they attempted to associate the local and themselves with the imperial state through elevating the cultural status of Quanzhou. Accordingly, Zhu Xi’s intellectual legacy in the area and the later Cheng-Zhu Confucian scholars were transformed into cultural and symbolic capitals with which the Quanzhou scholars propelled their hometown into a center of learning of national repute. -

Its ideological system characterized by "sending conscience" enjoys an important position in the history of moral education in China. From Wang Yangming's moral education thought, we can get a lot of philosophical thinking and these valuable thinking and experience can be fully applied to the current moral education work in Chinese universities. Based on the background of the formation of Wang Yangming's moral education thought, this paper first explains the goal of moral education, then interprets the concept of "conscience", and obtains the method of "combining knowledge with action". Finally, it discusses the enlightenment of Wang Yangming's moral education thought to the contemporary value from three aspects. 1. Introduction Wang Shouren, also called Wang Boan, known as Mr. Yang Ming, was born in the eighth year of Chenghua Ming dynasty (1472) and died in the seventh year of Jiajing Ming dynasty (1528).Born in a bureaucratic family, he was not ordinary when he was born, and he was young and promising. He was a little older and devoted to Zhu xi's study of thing. He entered the officialdom at the age of 28 and has held various official positions since then.Because of the resistance to sparsely argue to save, by the stick scold 40, demoted to the then uncivilized Longchang of GuiZhou .It was also in the middle of the night of the Longchang that Wang Yangming realized that the way of a saint should be inwards, but not outwards.
