Hinduism: An Overview Hinduism is the major religion of the Indian sub-continent, it is also known as Sanatana Dharma, or the "Eternal Way," it is our planet's original and oldest living religion, with over one billion adherents spread around the world. Today it has four main denominations: Saivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism and Smartism, each with hundreds of lineages. They represent a broad range of beliefs, practices and mystic goals, but virtually all concur on certain bedrock concepts. All Hindus worship one Supreme Reality, though they call it by many names. There is no eternal hell, no damnation, in Hinduism, and no intrinsic evil--no satanic force that opposes the will of God. Hindus believe that the cosmos was created out of God and is permeated by Him--a Supreme Being who both is form and pervades form, who creates, sustains and destroys the universe only to recreate it again in unending cycles. Hinduism is unique among the world’s religions. To begin with, it is mankind’s oldest spiritual declaration, the very fountainhead of faith on the planet. Hinduism’s venerable age has seasoned it to maturity. It is the only religion which is not founded in a single historic event or prophet, but which itself precedes recorded history. Hinduism has been called the “cradle of spirituality” and the “mother of all religions,” partially because it has influenced virtually every major religion and partly because it can absorb all other religions, honor and embrace their scriptures, their saints, their philosophy. This is possible because Hinduism looks compassionately on all genuine spiritual effort and knows unmistakably that all souls are evolving toward union with the Divine, and all are destined, without exception, to achieve spiritual enlightenment and liberation in this or a future life. -

HINDUISM IN EUROPE Stockholm 26-28 April, 2017 Abstracts 1. Vishwa Adluri, Hunter College, USA Sanskrit Studies in Germany, 1800–2015 German scholars came late to Sanskrit, but within a quarter century created an impressive array of faculties. European colleagues acknowledged Germany as the center of Sanskrit studies on the continent. This chapter examines the reasons for this buildup: Prussian university reform, German philological advances, imagined affinities with ancient Indian and, especially, Aryan culture, and a new humanistic model focused on method, objectivity, and criticism. The chapter’s first section discusses the emergence of German Sanskrit studies. It also discusses the pantheism controversy between F. W. Schlegel and G. W. F. Hegel, which crucially influenced the German reception of Indian philosophy. The second section traces the German reception of the Bhagavad Gītā as a paradigmatic example of German interpretive concerns and reconstructive methods. The third section examines historic conflicts and potential misunderstandings as German scholars engaged with the knowledge traditions of Brahmanic Hinduism. A final section examines wider resonances as European scholars assimilated German methods and modeled their institutions and traditions on the German paradigm. The conclusion addresses shifts in the field as a result of postcolonial criticisms, epistemic transformations, critical histories, and declining resources. 2. ISSN: 2455-2631 © November 2020 IJSDR | Volume 5 Issue 11 Impact of Pranayama, Hatha Yoga, and Raja Yoga Meditation on Executive Function and Metacognitive Regulation 1Susmita Patra, 2Dr. Ishita Chatterjee, 1Debolina Dasgupta 1Outgoing Post Graduate Student, 2Associate Professor Department of Applied Psychology, University Of Calcutta, Kolkata, India Abstract: The present investigation studies the effects of Pranayama, Hatha yoga and Raja yoga meditation on Executive Function and Metacognitive regulation. A sample of 60 students was selected for the study. They were randomly allotted to one of three yoga groups (pranayama, hatha yoga, raja yoga meditation) of 20 members. The working memory, inhibitory control and metacognitive regulation were measured by WAIS-IV working memory subtest, Stroop test and metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) respectively. The pre-training test scores were collected following which they were provided yoga training for 30 days. Tests were again conducted at the 10-day point and at the end of training after 30 days. Findings revealed that all the three types of yogic patterns lead to an increase in Executive function and Metacognitive regulation. The length of training also affected the test scores. Longer the training, better were the scores on all three tests. The interaction effect of yoga type and length of training was only significant for metacognitive regulation. Introduction: ‘Yoga’, the connection of the Supreme Being with the living, is an orthodox school of Indian philosophy. In India, yoga is not only a form of physical exercise, but also a spiritual practice and a way of living. -

Method: A randomized, controlled, clinical trial was carried out in a specialized center between February and December 2019. The patients in the intervention group (n = 25) participated in four group meditation sessions for one month, and the participants in the control group (n = 25) were exposed to an educational activity for the same period and frequency. Cohen’s d was used to evaluate the effect size. Results: A significant reduction in the level of distress and anxiety was found in the intervention group (p < 0.001). What is Moksha? by AiR What is Moksha? by AiR PREFACE Moksha is supposed to be the most spiritual word in the Hindu religion. It is said that Moksha is the nal goal of every human being. Everybody speaks of Moksha. It is so common to read about Moksha in every scripture, in every good religious book that we place our hands on. But not many people understand the true meaning of Moksha. What is Moksha all about? Translated, it means Liberation, Enlightenment or Nirvana. But what is Liberation? From what must we be liberated? The common man is so busy in the world today that he does not even realize that this world is bondage. This world is like quick sand in which we are sinking and one ne day when our end arrives, we will sink only to be reborn and go through the cycle of death and rebirth again and again. Very few are fortunate to stop and to realize the truth, to ponder upon the fact that this world is a bondage and that we are actually lost in the delusion of this world, in the pleasure, power and possessions. We are imprisoned! The one who realizes this truth starts his journey towards Moksha, towards Liberation and Enlightenment. It is this Seeker who understands the meaning of Moksha and Liberation, who has the courage to start the journey to be liberated, only such few Divine Souls get the opportunity of understanding of Moksha, achieving and living with it. Rest of humanity lives to die and the cycle continues with Moksha remaining a distant dream. -

The Rise of Bengali Yoga (Excerpt from Sun, Moon and Earth: The Sacred Relationship of Yoga and Ayurveda) By Mas Vidal To set the stage for a moment, the state of Bengal is an eastern state of India and is one of the most densely populated regions on the planet. It is home to the Ganges river delta at the confluence of the Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers. Rivers have always been a sacred part of yoga and the Indian lifestyle. The capital of Bengal is Kolkata, which was the center of the Indian independence movement. As yoga began to expand at the turn of the century through the 1950s, as a counter-cultural force opposed to British occupation, the region also struggled against a tremendous set-back, the Great Bengal Famine of 1943- 44, which took an estimated two to three million lives. India battled through this and eventually gained independence in 1947. Bengal managed to become a womb for bhakti yogis and the nectar that would sustain the renaissance of yoga in India and across the globe. Bengali seers like Sri Aurobindo promoted yoga as an integral system, a way of life that cultivated a dynamic relationship between mind, body, and soul. Some of the many styles of yoga that provide this pure synthesis remain extant in India, but only through a few living yoga teachers and lineages. This synthesis may even still exist sporadically in commercial yoga. One of the most influential figures of yoga in the West was Paramahansa Yogananda, who formulated a practical means of integrating ancient themes and techniques for the spiritual growth of people in Western societies, and for Eastern cultures to reestablish their balance between spirituality and the material. -

Lesson 40 The yamas and niyamas The yamas and niyamas are the Hindu code of conduct. Heeding the ten yamas or “restraints” keeps our instinctive nature in check. Abiding by the ten niyamas, “observances,” makes us more religious and cultured, revealing our refined soul nature. A foundation for our spiritual progress The yamas and niyamas provide the foundation to support our yoga practice and sustain us from day to day and year to year on the path to Siva. 1.AHIMSA: “Noninjury.” Do not harm others by what you do, say or think, even in your dreams. Live a kindly life, never causing fear, pain or injury. See God in everyone. Follow a vegetarian diet. 2.SATYA: “Truthfulness.” Speak only what is true, kind, helpful and necessary. Be true to your promises. Don’t keep secrets from family or friends. Be accurate and frank in discussions. Don’t deceive others. Admit your failings. Do not gossip, backbite or tell lies. 3.ASTEYA: “Nonstealing.” Do not steal. Control your desires, and live within your family’s means. Do not desire what others possess. Do not misuse things you borrow. Do not gamble or fail to repay debts. Do not use others’ names, words, resources or rights without permission and acknowledgement. 4.BRAHMACHARIYA:“Divine conduct.” Control your desires when single, reserving sexual relations for marriage. Before marriage, use vital energies in study, and after marriage in creating family success. Dress and speak modestly. Seek holy company. Avoid pornography and violence on TV, in movies, magazines and online. 5.KSHAMA:“Patience.” Restrain intolerance with people and impatience with circumstances.
