We’ll discover what lies beyond the city walls before coming together for a delicious welcome dinner at a local osteria. Accommodation: Albergo San Martino (or similar) MEALS: Dinner DAY 2 | LUCCA - CINQUE TERRE - LUCCA A rocky coastline, romantic candy-coloured villages... We must be in the Italian Riviera! After winding our way along this sublime stretch of shoreline we’ll find ourselves in Cinque Terre: a UNESCO World Heritage Site (and one of the highlights of our tour). After spending some time getting to know the area, we’ll return to Lucca for the evening. Accommodation: Albergo San Martino (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 3 | LUCCA - PISA - VOLTERA Infamous and impossible to miss, the Leaning Tower of Pisa makes for a staggering first port of call today. After snapping some photographic evidence of our visit, we’ll travel on to Volterra – where you’ll have the chance to look around at your own leisure. Perched on a plateau, this magnificent and mysterious medieval walled town will be our home for the night. Accommodation: Hotel La Locanda (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 4 | VOLTERRA - SAN GIMIGNANO - PIENZA Today we’ll make tracks to San Gimignano: home to a magnificent piazza, meandering stepped streets and some beautifully preserved architecture. While we’re here, we’ll sample the creations of a master gelato maker at Gelateria Dondoli – before carrying on to Fattoria San Donato for an indulgent wine tasting, complete with bruschetta and local meats. After taking in the town’s head- turning historic centre, we’ll journey onwards to Pienza – with a whistlestop tour of Siena along the way. Accommodation: Relais Il Chiostro di Pienza (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 5 | PIENZA Pienza's timeless charm and enchanting rural backdrop make it a serene spot to spend this morning. After a walking tour, we'll sample some handcrafted pecorino cheese and world-class wines at a delightful organic restaurant with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. MEALS: Breakfast DAY 6 | PIENZA - CHIANTI Onwards to the delightful Chianti region! Today we’ll make our way through heavenly countryside on our way to a traditional Tuscan country house, where a regional cookery class awaits us. Tuscany alone boasts six UNESCO sites, almost equalling the numbers of countries like Croatia, Finland and Norway. Tuscany enshrines 6 Unesco World Heritage Sites you should definitely consider when planning your Tuscany tour. Here is the list: 1) Florence. Everything that could be said about the historic centre of Florence has already been said. Ma a causa di una grande crisi iniziata nel XIV secolo, questo sviluppo subì una brusca interruzione: la peste nera del 1348 aveva causato una profonda depressione economica e un decremento demografico. Tuttavia, l’urbanistica fu un tema molto appassionante per le corti del rinascimento; infatti molti signori volevano creare delle vere e proprie realtà urbane, ordinate e efficienti, a norme di funzionalità che superassero lo stile medievale. ARCHITETTI DELL’EPOCA Tra i famosi architetti dell’epoca rinascimentale fu senza dubbio Antonio Averulino, detto «Filarete». A lui si deve la progettazione della città immaginaria di Sforzinda nel suo «trattato di architettura» e Francesco di Giorgio Martini che proponse un repertorio di forme simmetriche e rigorose da dare alle città, tenendo conto delle nuove esigenze di difesa. Oltre a loro, anche gli architetti Sebastiano Serlio, Andrea Palladio e Vincenzo Scamozzi affrontano il tema della città definita geometricamente. URBANISTICA RINASCIMENTALE Il tratto principale dell’architettura rinascimentale fu quello di dare una forma alla città. L’idea principale era quella di dare alla citta una forma ordinata e razionale. Tra le novità della nuova urbanistica vi sono le «città-fortezza», ovvero città fortificate con nuovi sistemi difensivi. Alcuni esempi sono Palmanova, Casertavecchia, Urbino, Ferrara, Terra del Sole, e Sabbioneta. Nelle concrete realizzazioni emerge, prima in Italia e poi in Europa, la necessità di vie più larghe e spazi pubblici regolari e la ricerca di simmetria e di decoro urbano.
