Journal of Economic Perspectives—Volume 29, Number 1—Winter 2015—Pages 89–114 The Superiority of Economists† Marion Fourcade, Etienne Ollion, and Yann Algan here exists an implicit pecking order among the social sciences, and it seems to be dominated by economics. For starters, economists see themselves T at or near the top of the disciplinary hierarchy. In a survey conducted in the early 2000s, Colander (2005) found that 77 percent of economics graduate students in elite programs agree with the statement that “economics is the most scientific of the social sciences.” Some 15 years ago, Richard Freeman (1999, p. 141) speculated on the origins of such a conviction in the pages of this journal. His assessment was candid: “[S]ociologists and political scientists have less powerful analytical tools and know less than we do, or so we believe. By scores on the Graduate Record Examina- tion and other criteria, our field attracts students stronger than theirs, and our courses are more mathematically demanding.” At first glance, the academic labor market seems to confirm the natives’ judg- ment about the higher status of economists. They are the only social scientists to have a “Nobel” prize, thanks to a grant from the Bank of Sweden to the Nobel foundation. Economists command some of the highest levels of compensation in American arts and science faculties according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Social Change and Perceptions of Economic Polarization in the United States, 1966-2009” (with Adam Goldstein) Using forty years of public opinion polls, we explain historical trends in perceptions of distributional inequality, a trend which tracks inversely with the underlying phenomena. “John Dewey and the Pragmatist Revival in American Sociology” This manuscript analyzes John Dewey’s writings on the social sciences and contrasts Dewey’s perspective with contemporary uses of Dewey’s ideas in American sociology. Manuscripts in Preparation “Identifying Propaganda in China” (with Molly Roberts, Brandon Stewart, and Yin Yuan) This computational project employs a novel data set of Chinese newspapers from 2012 to 2020 to examine the prevalence and content of government media control in China. Pippa Norris [email protected] Synopsis: Recent years have seen extensive debate in popular commentary about a pervasive ‘cancel culture’ thought to be taking over college campuses. A progressive orthodoxy, it is argued, has silenced conservative voices and diverse perspectives. This development, it is claimed, has ostracized contrarians, limited academic freedom, strengthened conformism, and eviscerated robust intellectual debate. But does systematic empirical evidence support these claims? After reviewing the arguments, Part II of this study outline several propositions arising from the cancel culture thesis and describes the sources of empirical survey evidence and measures used to test these claims within the discipline of political science. Data is derived from a new global survey, the World of Political Science, 2019, with 2,446 responses collected from scholars studying or working in 102 countries. -

The fundamental goal of the course is to develop tools to understand both the social organization of science and the technoscientific dimensions of social life. Although much of the actual course content concerns science and technology, the theoretical and analytical frameworks developed in this course are intended to apply to any domain involving knowledge, expertise, or technical tools. The study tapped faculty opinion on such matters as unionization, bargaining agents, the university's response to and priorities in austerity, the argument over affirmative action, equality vs. meritocracy in the university, the nature of the academic enterprise, perception of one's own role(s), the value placed on various faculty responsibilities, teaching versus research, the failings cf the American university, domestic social,political, and economic matters, and foreign policy issues. Faculty views are presented in three perspectives: as compared with facultyopinion at earlier times, compared with public opinion, and analyzed by age, sex, and academic rank of the respondents. Advocacy, counseling, judging, law-making, administering—these are the major grouping of the law-crafts. At the present juncture, the fresh study of these crafts and of the manner of their best doing is one of 2 the major needs of jurisprudence. -
