Introduction: The Prophet and the Philosopher Merely juxtaposing basic descriptions of Reinhold Niebuhr and Michael Oakeshott – their biographies, temperaments, and writings – calls attention to their incongruities. The former was from the American Midwest, the son of German immigrants, a brooding pastor and theologian, a man of the left and prominent public figure; the latter was British, a cheerful romantic, an idiosyncratic conservative, and enough of a quiet academic that, during his funeral, the local priest officiating at the service forgot his name. 1 Niebuhr wrote with the urgency of the prophet, and even his most sustained and nuanced work retains a sense of impending disaster. Federalists and Republicans 1789–1816 Why It Matters In the first government under the Constitution, important new institutions included the cabinet, a system of federal courts, and a national bank. Political parties gradually developed from the different views of citizens in the Northeast, West, and South. The new government faced special challenges in foreign affairs, including the War of 1812 with Great Britain. The Impact Today During this period, fundamental policies of American government came into being. • Politicians set important precedents for the national government and for relations between the federal and state governments. For example, the idea of a presidential cabinet originated with George Washington and has been followed by every president since that time • President Washington’s caution against foreign involvement powerfully influenced American foreign policy. Journal of Social Welfare and Human Rights, Vol. 1 No. 2, December 2013 1 The Similarities and the Differences in the Functioning of the European Right Wing: An Attempt to Integrate the European Conservatives and Christian Democrats Dr. Kire Sarlamanov1 Dr. Aleksandar Jovanoski2 Abstract The text reviews the attempt of the European Conservative and Christian Democratic Parties to construct a common platform within which they could more effectively defend and develop the interests of the political right wing in the European Parliament. The text follows the chronological line of development of events, emphasizing the doctrinal and the national differences as a reason for the relative failure in the process of unification of the European right wing. The subcontext of the argumentation protrudes the ideological, the national as well as the religious-doctrinal interests of some of the more important Christian Democratic, that is, conservative parties in Europe, which emerged as an obstacle of the unification. One of the more important problems that enabled the quality and complete unification of the European conservatives and Christian Democrats is the attitude in regard to the formation of EU as a federation of countries. The weight down of the British conservatives on the side of the national sovereignty and integrity against the Pan-European idea for united European countries formed on federal basis, is considered as the most important impact on the unification of the parties from the right ideological spectrum on European land. The 36thCambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime Unexplained Wealth - whose business? The Thirty-Sixth International Symposium on Economic Crime is the most extensive and ambitious programme that we have so far attempted to put together. The overarching theme is how we can better identify and render accountable unexplained and suspicious wealth. As we increasingly realise that the way in which most of us approach suspect wealth and money laundering lacks efficiency and imposes arguably disproportionate burdens and risks on the financial and business system, it appears a partial answer might be in focusing on the identification of unexplained wealth, but then what do we do? These important and timely issues are pursued in a practical, applied and relevant manner, by those with the benefit of experience from across the world. The symposium, although held in one of the world’s leading universities and recognising the significance of intelligent deliberation, is not a talking shop for those with vested interests – official or commercial. We strive to offer a rich and deep analysis of the real issues and, in particular, threats to our institutions and economies presented by economically motivated crime and misconduct. Therefore, well over 600 experts from around the world will share their experience and knowledge with other participants drawn from policy makers, law enforcement, compliance, regulation, business and the professions. Richardson, Jr. Neoconservatism: Origins and Evolution, 1945 – 1985 (Under the direction of Michael H. Hunt) This dissertation examines the origins and evolution of neoconservatism as a philosophical and political movement in America from 1945 to 1980. I maintain that as the exigencies and anxieties of the Cold War fostered new intellectual and professional connections between academia, government and business, three disparate intellectual currents were brought into contact: the German philosophical tradition of anti-modernism, the strategic-analytical tradition associated with the RAND Corporation, and the early Cold War anti-Communist tradition identified with figures such as Reinhold Niebuhr. Driven by similar aims and concerns, these three intellectual currents eventually coalesced into neoconservatism. As a political movement, neoconservatism sought, from the 1950s on, to re-orient American policy away from containment and coexistence and toward confrontation and rollback through activism in academia, bureaucratic and electoral politics. Although the neoconservatives were only partially successful in promoting their transformative project, their accomplishments are historically significant. More specifically, they managed to interject their views and ideas into American political and strategic thought, discredit détente and arms control, and shift U.S. foreign policy toward a more confrontational stance vis-à-vis the Soviet Union. -

In Memoriam WILSON CAREY McWILLIAMS https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms (1933-2005) Wilson Carey McWilliams, Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University and editorial board member of this journal, died on March 29, 2005. Though his interests and writing spanned the field of political science, McWilliams had a particular ear for the music of American political life, and it was to articulating the notes of that song that he dedicated most of his energy. His first major work, The Idea of Fraternity in America (1973), for which he was awarded the National Historical Society Prize, sounded the themes that would become his refrain. In American political history, modern liberal theory, with its basic , subject to the Cambridge Core terms of use, available at assumptions of human individualism, has become ever more ascendant. Modern liberalism teaches that fraternity is an as- yet unachieved end of politics, one that can be realized with the dissolution of all particular ties among particular people in communities.
