READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY June 16 Prv 8:22-31 Rom 5:1-5 Jn 16:12-15 SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2019 From the Pentecost Sunday Desk of Fr. Tony We celebrate Pentecost today. Pentecost is the belief that the Holy Spirit came down upon Mary and the apostles in the form of tongues of fire. This is considered the birthday of the Church. Happy Birthday everyone. We belong to Christ’s church. The Holy Spirit filled the apostles with courage so they could go out and preach the message of the gospel. The sacrament of confirmation, which we received in the 8th grade, gives us the Holy Spirit so that we can proclaim the death and resurrection of Christ. In confirmation we receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which is courage, understanding, wisdom, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, and piety. These gifts help us proclaim Christ to the world. The apostles obeyed God by staying in Jerusalem until the Paraclete, or Holy Spirit came and descended upon them. From the time of Jesus’ Ascension into heaven until Pentecost, was nine days. The apostles had nine days to think about and pray about their role as Jesus’ followers. We to must take time to think about our role as followers of God. What does it mean for me to be Christ’s disciple? What does he expect of me? What role do I play in Christ’s church and in the world? God bless you all. Fr. Launched ten years ago in Ypsilanti, Michigan as Ave Maria College, the institution was envisioned as a comprehensive liberal arts University off ering baccalaureate and graduate degrees in which teaching and research were major foci, with all of its activities refl ecting a joyful fi delity to the Magisterium of the Church. Since its founding, the University has increased in size, expanded its scope of programs and services, moved its location to Southwest Florida, incorporated into its structure a branch campus in Central America, and, even at this young age, has developed into one of the country’s best known Catholic universities. The University is characterized by its distinctive campus designed in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as its distinguished and high quality faculty and staff personnel. The University also features a well-qualifi ed student body composed of students from across the nation and the globe, a distinctive curriculum grounded in the Core Curriculum, and a robust student life program that responds to the spiritual, physical, co-curricular, and leadership-development needs of the student body. As you examine this publication, I know that you will discover these characteristics as they are refl ected in its content and descriptions of the University’s programs and services.

MIDWEST CHICAGO-DETROIT AND WISCONSIN PROVINCES SUMMER 2016 Band of Brothers Also in This Issue: n Passing the Torch: Fr. Don Doll, SJ, Empowers How Vincent Strand, SJ, and His Emerging Lakota Artists Brothers Found the Priesthood n Jesuit Jubilarians: 50 Years of Wisdom & Grace n Friends in Faith: Fr. Mitch Pacwa, SJ, Remembers Mother Angelica Dear Friends, When Saint Ignatius and his brother Jesuits named their fledgling religious order theCompañía de Jesús, they did not simply announce that their efforts would be directed toward serving Christ. They also signaled the relationship they would have to the world. For Jesuits, the word Compañía — or Society — points to our mission to be companions alongside the people we serve, particularly those in the greatest need. Accompanying others involves sharing in their experiences. As the Chicago-Detroit and Wisconsin Provinces work toward the creation of a new province, we have had many opportunities to walk together, exploring the rich history and traditions within our region and beyond. This spring, we visited Jesuits in Kohima, with whom the Wisconsin Province has had a long and fruitful partnership. We also traveled to El Salvador for a joint meeting between the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States and the Conferencia de Provinciales Jesuitas de América Latina (CPAL). There, we discussed common goals of Jesuits throughout the Americas, while also visiting historic locations, such as the site of Jesuit Fr. Rutilio Grande’s murder. This was a poignant reminder of the tremendous sacrifices many make in witnessing to a faith that does justice for the least among us.

  • Maronite Voice a Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA
The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume X Issue No. VIII September 2014 Synod of Bishops on the Family 2014 The Church's teaching on the family The Church's understanding of marriage and the natural law The role of the Church in the pastoral care of the family The challenges facing families in light of divorce and re-marriage As Maronites, we have always emphasized the role of the Maronite family in the life of the Church. The family is the domestic church. Our families have been the source of Christian formation for the young, the cradle of prayer and devotion, the font of priestly and monastic vocations, and the foundation of stability in the life of the Maronite people. As Maronites, we pride ourselves in placing special emphasis on the family. The Maronite Patriarchal Synod, which met from 2003-2006, noted the following: "The Maronite family was not only faithful to its Christian faith, but it also developed a missionary spirit, which has been one of its historical constants." A strong family contributed to a strong Church. However, it is clear that there are many challenges that face our families today. As the Patriarchal Synod also noted, "steady population growth, economic, social and political transformations, as well as development of life conditions and emigration [from villages to cities and from Lebanon to the West] were all factors that led to major changes in the Maronite family." It is clear that our own families face the same challenges as all Christian families in the modern, technical society in which we find ourselves.

As a Catholic institution of higher education dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, our patroness, we know that her Son, Jesus Christ, is the divine Teacher who opens our minds and hearts to the fullness of Truth. “He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).” He is the source and goal of everything we do, as we educate laity, priests and religious who will go forth boldly to foster a true culture of life and civilization of love. Ave Maria University is committed to building a university that will earn a reputation for excellent teaching, cutting-edge research, and joyful fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. To develop the first of these “pillars,” we have attracted an extraordinarily gifted and dynamic faculty. By means of our integrated liberal arts core curriculum, these teachers introduce our students to the great tradition of theology, philosophy, history, literature, classical languages and natural sciences, imparting what Pope John Paul II calls “a unified and organic vision of knowledge” (Papal Encyclical, Fides et Ratio). Students learn not just to memorize material, but to understand it deeply, appropriate it, and apply it to their lives.

  • Becoming a Jesuit the Challenging and Rewarding Journey of Formation
USA MIDWEST PROVINCE | FALL/WINTER 2020 Becoming a Jesuit The Challenging and Rewarding Journey of Formation Also in This Issue: n An Interview with Jesuit-Educated Comedian Bob Newhart n Campion High School’s Legacy Lives On n Ignatian Spirituality Project Takes Root in Dublin Dear Friends, As we near the end of 2020, I find myself reflecting on the ways that the world has changed over these last 12 months. The onset of the pandemic, followed by economic collapse, and the social and political upheaval of an election year—any of these would be remarkable on their own. Yet in all of this, we have adapted to find new ways of worshipping, socializing, working, sharing, and learning together. Yes, these adjustments were and continue to be stressful, but these are also times of grace, as we see faith and courage overcome desolation and fear. Perhaps that is why it’s no surprise that our schools across the Midwest rose swiftly to meet the challenges of COVID-19 (page 14), stepping up in the same way Jesuits have done since our founding. In Cincinnati, at Bellarmine Parish and Xavier University (page 20), the pandemic united the parish and university to work together in unique and innovative ways, as perhaps nothing else could have. At the same time, the Seminars in Ignatian Formation and Leadership (SIF) program (page 19) continued to offer training in the Spiritual Exercises to those serving at our Jesuit works. This vital program transitioned successfully to an online model, so that the ripple effect of this training continues.
