    BIOGRAPHY OF FATHER MITCH PACWA, S.J. In the year 2000, Father Mitchell Pacwa, S.J. established Ignatius Productions, a Catholic media production apostolate, under the Society of Jesus, whose mission is to teach people the scriptures, educate Catholics about their Faith, and promote unity and understanding within the Mystical Body of Christ. Father Pacwa received his B.A. in Philosophy and Theology from the University of Detroit, summa cum laude. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1976 with the Society of Jesus and then continued his studies and then received his Master of Divinity and S.T.B. from the Jesuit School of Theology of Loyola University, magna cum laude. At Vanderbilt University, he received his Master of Arts as well as his Ph.D. in Old Testament. He has taught at the high school, university, and seminary levels. He has lectured at hundreds of conferences and churches around the world. Mitch Pacwa, SJ, Remembers Mother Angelica Dear Friends, When Saint Ignatius and his brother Jesuits named their fledgling religious order theCompañía de Jesús, they did not simply announce that their efforts would be directed toward serving Christ. They also signaled the relationship they would have to the world. For Jesuits, the word Compañía — or Society — points to our mission to be companions alongside the people we serve, particularly those in the greatest need. Accompanying others involves sharing in their experiences. As the Chicago-Detroit and Wisconsin Provinces work toward the creation of a new province, we have had many opportunities to walk together, exploring the rich history and traditions within our region and beyond. This spring, we visited Jesuits in Kohima, with whom the Wisconsin Province has had a long and fruitful partnership. We also traveled to El Salvador for a joint meeting between the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States and the Conferencia de Provinciales Jesuitas de América Latina (CPAL). There, we discussed common goals of Jesuits throughout the Americas, while also visiting historic locations, such as the site of Jesuit Fr. Rutilio Grande’s murder. This was a poignant reminder of the tremendous sacrifices many make in witnessing to a faith that does justice for the least among us.

The family is the domestic church. Our families have been the source of Christian formation for the young, the cradle of prayer and devotion, the font of priestly and monastic vocations, and the foundation of stability in the life of the Maronite people. As Maronites, we pride ourselves in placing special emphasis on the family. The Maronite Patriarchal Synod, which met from 2003-2006, noted the following: "The Maronite family was not only faithful to its Christian faith, but it also developed a missionary spirit, which has been one of its historical constants." A strong family contributed to a strong Church. However, it is clear that there are many challenges that face our families today. As the Patriarchal Synod also noted, "steady population growth, economic, social and political transformations, as well as development of life conditions and emigration [from villages to cities and from Lebanon to the West] were all factors that led to major changes in the Maronite family." It is clear that our own families face the same challenges as all Christian families in the modern, technical society in which we find ourselves.

The onset of the pandemic, followed by economic collapse, and the social and political upheaval of an election year—any of these would be remarkable on their own. Yet in all of this, we have adapted to find new ways of worshipping, socializing, working, sharing, and learning together. Yes, these adjustments were and continue to be stressful, but these are also times of grace, as we see faith and courage overcome desolation and fear. Perhaps that is why it’s no surprise that our schools across the Midwest rose swiftly to meet the challenges of COVID-19 (page 14), stepping up in the same way Jesuits have done since our founding. In Cincinnati, at Bellarmine Parish and Xavier University (page 20), the pandemic united the parish and university to work together in unique and innovative ways, as perhaps nothing else could have. At the same time, the Seminars in Ignatian Formation and Leadership (SIF) program (page 19) continued to offer training in the Spiritual Exercises to those serving at our Jesuit works. This vital program transitioned successfully to an online model, so that the ripple effect of this training continues.
