It conjures up images of dimly-lit clubs and some bassist slumped over their instrument, eyes closed, coordinating the maelstrom around them. But for their almost supreme importance, people still talk during the bass solo and think it odd when a bassist New York@Night leads a group. À cause des vibrations particulières à cette musique, bien sûr, à cause de cette liberté des sons qui s’inventent et s’engendrent. Mais aussi à cause de l’Histoire. On ne peut oublier que c’est ici qu’a eu lieu, en février 1948, le 1er festival de jazz au monde. Nice a été le théâtre de cet événement, pas New-York ni la Nouvelle-Orléans ! Et cela n’a pas été le fruit du hasard mais celui d’un enracinement profond de cet art nouveau dans la terre niçoise. Puisque cette histoire niçoise se noue dès la fin de la première guerre mondiale au contact des soldats américains en convalescence sur la Riviera. Lorsqu’ils ont regagné leurs foyers, ils nous ont laissé ces rythmes en héritage. Nous les avons fait fructifier. Nous avons été les acteurs de l’une des plus fantastiques aventures Christian Estrosi, musicales de tous les temps.
