Laura Horak Tracing the History of Trans and Gender Variant Filmmakers Abstract Most writing on transgender cinema focuses on representations of trans people, rather than works made by trans people. This article surveys the history of trans and gender variant people creating audiovisual media from the beginning of cinema through today. From the professional gender impersonators of the stage who crossed into film during the medium’s first decades to self- identified transvestite and transsexual filmmakers, like Ed Wood and Christine Jorgensen of the mid-twentieth century, to the enormous upsurge in trans filmmaking of the 1990s, this article explores the rich and complex history of trans and gender variant filmmaking. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Caitlyn Jenner currently stands out as the face of the movement. • Advertising that includes transgender people is still relatively rare in mainstream media. • Consumers indicate a high degree of openness to seeing transgender characters in ads, as Americans believe that doing so is appropriately inclusive and simply reflects the diversity that exists in America. • Transgender-inclusive ads have the ability to build brand equity and break through. Like other strong stands taken by brands, marketers that include transgender people in their ads are much more likely to be seen as brave, progressive, inclusive and honest. • However, marketers must be careful to be authentic and to make sure the creative executions are on strategy as some are sensitive to feeling that brands are politicizing the issue for their own gain. • And which brands and categories have permission to include transgender people in their ads? Organizing Your Course and Using This Book Queer Studies: Beyond Binaries was conceived of as a result of my experiences teaching a 200‐ level survey course over the course of several semesters at Ithaca College. The course is offered in the Program on Women’s and Gender Studies, an interdisciplinary unit with a coordinator and faculty generally drawn from established departments. Its only prerequisite is sophomore standing (though I often waived this requirement for students with particular initiative and commitment to the material), assuming no background in gender theory, sexuality studies, or any particular disciplinary approach to the study of queerness. -

Introduction SUSAN STRYKER and PAISLEY CURRAH elcome to TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, which we intend to be the Wjournal of record for the rapidly consolidating interdisciplinary field of transgender studies. Although the field is only now gaining a foothold in the academy, the term transgender has a long history that reflects multiple, sometimes overlapping, sometimes even contested meanings. For some, it marks various forms of gender crossing; for others, it signals ways of occupying genders that confound the gender binary. For some, it confers the recognition necessary for identity-based rights claims; for others, it is a tool to critically explore the dis- tribution of inequality. The term transgender, then, carries its own antinomies: Does it help make or undermine gender identities and expressions? Is it a way of being gendered or a way of doing gender? Is it an identification or a method? A promise or a threat? Although we retain transgender in the full, formal title of this journal, we invite you to imagine the T in TSQ as standing in for whatever version of trans- best suits you—and we imagine many of our readers, like us, will move back and forth among several of them. We call your attention as well to our use of the asterisk (symbol of the open-ended search) in the journal’s logo, our hopefully not-too-obscure gesture toward the inherently unfinishable combinatorial work of the trans- prefix. ARTS & CULTURE Negotiating the Spectacle in Transgender Performances of Alexis Arquette, Zackary Drucker, DavEnd, niv Acosta, and Tobaron Waxman DORAN GEORGE Abstract This review looks at the work of five North American artists who tackle the prevailing social demand upon transgender subjects to make a spectacle of their bodies. They reflect upon the body as a social site in order to resist and redeploy the scrutiny under which transgender is drawn. In film, dance, and visual and relational performance, the artists contest conventional social construc- tions of transgender and articulate existential possibility in ways that contribute to and echo the development of new ideas about embodiment. he relationship between Alexis Arquette and the British television station that T funded her 2007 movie She’s My Brother is emblematic for contemporary 1 artists tackling the performance contexts in which they represent transgender. The celebrity family member substantiated her on-screen identity by achieving legal, medical, and cultural agency while confounding Channel 4 expectations for a Hollywood surgical transition story. Due to her concern about side effects, she procured a therapist’s letter for the right to vaginoplasty that precluded the usually compulsory course of hormone treatment. Yet Arquette denied the viewer a spectacle of surgical transition, which has come to dominate representation of transsexuality in mainstream culture. She achieved visibility for transgender bodily self-possession by fighting on camera for medical intervention on
