We’ve been so grateful for the generosity. At this time, funding is questionable. But, the planning is in the works and the show will go on…..it’s too important, and too much fun for everyone! If you haven’t had the pleasure of attending one of these events, you have missed an evening which is so unique and special. We will keep you informed….and it’s free!!! To continue the mission of the “Let Us Play” Program, if anyone wishes to donate new/used musical instruments, provide storage for the instruments, or donate time as a committee member, please contact The Blues Alliance: (772) 467-1851. Our web site is: www.bluesal- liance.org. And by all means….please!!! If you know a child who has an interest in music but little or no means to obtain an instrument, please con- tact us. We especially welcome written requests from the children themselves. “Happy New year”, everyone! Nicolette Smith and Alexandra Smith receiving their certificates Volume 35 Page 3 The Year in Review by Patti Gamble 2011, well it was a great year for The Blues Alliance. New members, new ideas, some new programs topped the list of happenings. Thanks to our all-volunteer board that help to preserve and promote blues music on The Treasure Coast. Over the years we have been well-represented at the annual IBC events in Memphis. Even in the nation’s most stressful economic times, we continue to do so! The IBC has been increased to a four day event! The BATC has increased memberships, sponsors and ideas to keep the blues alive in 2011. We MUST keep going! And we will! We MUST have a blues organization in our local counties. The philosophy is this: you pay your dues locally, we pay nationally. Thus, we all support The American Art of the blues! It’s NOT, repeat NOT what you get for your money! The National Blues Foundation is sup- ported by you and me! In 2011, our Recital/Jam was a huge success thanks to Elaine Romano Souza and Tom Brown. The BATC works with Helping People Succeed and Future Generations Music Enrichment Program of Fort Pierce for this yearly event. Thank you to The Port Saint Lucie Downtown Lion’s Club for the generous donation to help us fund this project. The turnout was great and the Core Band headed by Gerry Mullaney, did a fantastic job working with the children. Instruments have been donated and stored for our Let Us Play Program. All it takes is a child to write us a letter of need and voila…. we make their dream come true! Our now, Hooked on Blues Event supports our bands each month. We simply check with the band, check with their site and connect at their gig. We do not book these events; we just hook up and have a good time. The Alliance had the annual playoffs at Mickey Finn’s this year and Joel Zoss and The Pitbull of Blues Band will be going to Memphis the end of January. We wish you all the best. The Alliance will be contributing to their trip through our funds and through the two benefits we have produced. The BATC helps to “launce careers in music”, says, long standing member, Vern Melvin. Two music scholarships were awarded this year through IRSC to, Joshua Schiffke and James Staggs. We wish you well in your future endeavors. Ben Prestage As you have noticed, our monthly meetings are no longer always on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. We have had to change things up a bit to include our Hooked on Blues Event. As always, you are noti- fied via e-mail and newsletter of meetings and events. Congratulations to Ben Prestage on his BMA nomination for instrumentalist of the year for Diddley Bow! Ben, you’re unique and a true bluesman, we wish you the best! 2011 was an incredible year for Mark Barnes! Mark won the LA Music award for composer of the year! Also, let’s not forget “Casa Morningside”, loved it, loved the music! The best human achievements are passed from generation to generation through a language made up of symbols called music. These symbols are the keys to exchanging creative thoughts. Let us all value music, especially for us the blues and to increase the awareness of music study….pass it on! B L U E I N K APRIL 2016 Gator By the Bay Brings Musicians Together in Exciting Pairings Now in its 15th year, Gator By the Bay, May 5-8, 2016, has become a wildly popular San Diego festival tradition known for presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles and a fun- filled atmosphere. Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. Often lauded as the “Master of the Slide Guitar”, Roy Rogers’ distinctive style is instantly recognizable. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. Harmonica virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter John Németh has multiple Blues Music Awards nominations to his name, and his album, ‘Memphis Grease’, won Best Soul Blues Album at the 2015 Blues Music Awards. He has been nominated for the Blues Music Awards 2016 B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, to be given out on May 5. Other notable combined artists’ performances include Sugaray Rayford, Alabama Mike & the Drop Ins with harmonica master Rick Estrin and harmonica and guitar whiz-kid Jon Atkinson on Friday evening, May 6, and Jon Atkinson with Rick Estrin and Fabulous Thunderbird alumna Kim Wilson on Saturday, May 7.

  • Big Walter Horton, Blues Harmonica Giant, Classic Sides 1951-1956 (3 CD) Di Bear Family, Uscito Nel 2010, Dopo La Stesura Di Questo Documento

As everyone is aware by now, it is business most unusual these days, and that affects Charlotte Blues Society as well as the businesses we support with live music. CBS has been taking the cues from City, State and Federal officials regarding our events and gatherings throughout the novel coronavirus / COVID-91 pandemic. The Stay at Home order by the County has indeed affected upcoming events, and we hope every one of our members and fellow music lovers will take this advice to heart and follow it, in order that this virus be allowed to run its course with the least transmission and loss of life. We love each of you and want you to take care of your health, and stay safe: “Stay Home” This is serious stuff friends. You know when The Stones start cancelling dates we are looking at something that is epic. The Blues Music Awards in Memphis are cancelled. Live concerts throughout the Carolinas and the world have come to a halt. This is not the flu. This is not a cold. This is a moment in time that we must take action, or perhaps ,more clearly: non- action.

CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain’t Lyin’ . .” radio promotion contact: Brad Hunt, The WNS Group (585) 765-2083, [email protected] Charlie’s riveting Sonoma County show brought his unstoppable, hard hitting, tone heavy sound to the audience who couldn’t get enough. Luckily someone had turned on the tape and Charlie knew just what to do – he took the tapes down to Clarksdale MS and delivered them into the capable mixing and mastering hands of Gary Vincent who in collaboration with Charlie, brought Mississippi mud to this exceptional live recording. I AIN’T LYIN’ is all Charlie. The cd is a group of painstakingly crafted original tunes penned by the hand of this Mississippi master that resonate with the land of Mississippi itself. Charlie’s music rises from the river, crosses the levy, dances through the streets and cuts straight to the heart of what it is to be alive. Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. This man cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s – thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Charlie Musselwhite may be the only musician to get a huge ovation just for opening his briefcase. Fans know that’s where he keeps his harmonicas and they’re about to hear one of the true masters work his magic on the humble instrument.
