As some of our venerable faculty might remember, back in the Middle Ages, groups of students banded together and hired teachers to help further their education. Most of the world's most respected universities began just this way. In the City University (CUNY) students are still paying for and supporting the institution and its growth. However, they have minimal say in the decision-making processes and even that might soon be a thing of the past. The student struggle to obtain meaningful input in the CUNY decision-making processes has been a long and ardous one and still continues. Students have been fighting to secure for themselves their rightful voice in governing this, their university. This necessary voice is theirs not only by virtue of their financial, time, and educational commitments to the City itself. They live here, work here and, in general, contribute financially, politically and socially to the well being-of the city. On an even more intrinsic level, students and their families are, as taxpayers, accountable for all of the financial responsibilities of the City University. It is fully their right that they be allowed to protect Pandora welcomes your editorial comments in the their many important investments in this education system. forms of letters to the editor. If a student is not included among the mayor's appointees, some provision must be made to create and sustain a viable student voice. : Including a student on the restructured BHE is essential as both past and present history have shown that students (and often only Letters to the Editor students) can be depended on to show concern for other students and the welfare of the entire university.
