Neville Brothers -- the first Family of New Orleans Music -- Has Vowed Not to Return to New Orleans
Dec. 15, 2005-- Cyril Neville boarded Amtrak's City of New Orleans train with a full head of steam. He joined singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie earlier this month for the first leg of a 12-day journey from Chicago to New Orleans, playing concerts along the way to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Neville, however, won't be on the train when it rolls into his old hometown. He won't be going home at all. Neville, 56, percussionist-vocalist and youngest member of the Neville Brothers -- the first family of New Orleans music -- has vowed not to return to New Orleans. During a heartfelt conversation before embarking on the train journey, Neville explained he and his wife, Gaynielle, have bought a home in Austin, Texas. Cyril Neville joins his nephew Ivan Neville, as well as the Radiators and the Iguanas as popular New Orleans acts who have settled in Austin. Some even perform in an ad hoc band known as the Texiles. They sing a different song about the promised recovery of New Orleans. "Would I go back to live?" Neville asked. "There's nothing there. And the situation for musicians was a joke. People thought there was a New Orleans music scene -- there wasn't. You worked two times a year: Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. The only musicians I knew who made a living playing music in New Orleans were Kermit Ruffins and Pete Fountain. Everyone else had to have a day job or go on tour. I have worked more in two months in Austin than I worked in two years in New Orleans. -

THE SHEEPDOGS HAVE AT IT SYNOPSIS The Sheepdogs Have At It joins the Rolling Stone cover winners at the apex of their newfound fame and a crossroads in their careers. One might think that newfound fame would lead successful young rock stars to rest on their laurels, but nothing could be further from the truth. More than ever, with the whole world watching, the Sheepdogs need to get down to business. We join the band at their Saskatoon homecoming show in October 2011. They’ve returned for the first time since winning the Rolling Stone cover contest, this time as the opening act for Kings of Leon. We meet them and see them play for thousands of fans, their biggest audience yet. But the big task is still ahead. In January, The Sheepdogs go into a Nashville studio to record their new album, now backed by Atlantic records. Patrick Carney of The Black Keys is producing the record, and the guys have only 17 days to lay down the new tracks. This story follows the Sheepdogs into the studio as this task is carried to fruition, while alternating between the band’s current tour around the continent. There is a staggering amount of work to be done and the guys needs to keep on top of it. Occasionally, we take a big jump back in time to the early days of the band. There was a period, less than a year ago, when things weren’t going so well for the Sheepdogs. For seven years, the band had toiled in obscurity with almost no recognition. -

PROCESSING INFORMATION The collection was processed, and a finding aid created, in 2010. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Martin Williams [1924-1992] was born in Richmond Virginia and educated at the University of Virginia (BA 1948), the University of Pennsylvania (MA 1950) and Columbia University. He was a nationally known critic, specializing in jazz and American popular culture. He wrote for major jazz periodicals, especially Down Beat, co-founded The Jazz Review and was the author of numerous books on jazz. His book The Jazz Tradition won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music criticism in 1973. From 1971-1981 he directed the Jazz and American Culture Programs at the Smithsonian Institution, where he compiled two widely respected collections of recordings, The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, and The Smithsonian Collection of Big Band Jazz. His liner notes for the latter won a Grammy Award. SCOPE & CONTENT/COLLECTION DESCRIPTION Martin Williams preferred to retain his writings in their published form: there are many clipped articles but few manuscript drafts of published materials in his files. -
