Why Join the Blues Society Of Omaha with Your Membership Donation? The Blues Society of Omaha, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1998. We are an all-volunteer organization with over 800 dues-paying members. BSO’s mission is “Keepin’ the Blues Alive”. We are recognized as one of the top Blues Societies in the country. With the help of your tax-deductible donation we continue to promote blues music, blues musicians, and live music venues & events. Among our many projects and accomplishments are these: • BSO promotes musicians and venues by maintaining a comprehensive live music calendar on our website, omahablues.com. BSO also distributes free monthly news flyers with calendars to numerous public gathering spots to inform the general community of live music shows in the area. • BluesEd is a non-profit youth artist development program created and sponsored by Blues Society of Omaha. The BluesEd program began in 2001 to provide opportunities for young musicians to learn blues music in a series of workshops and to play with other students in a band format. Our BluesEd bands always are impressive and they have performed at some of the finest festivals & venues in and around Omaha. • The Blues Society of Omaha has hosted an annual Nebraska Blues Challenge competition for local bands since 2011. All of the participating bands are showcased in judged public events as they compete for a package of prizes and the honor of representing BSO at the International Blues Challenge competition held in Memphis. All of the winning Nebraska bands have gone on to receive national attention and acclaim while making BSO proud! • BSO produces and/or sponsors various music events throughout the year. • BSO is a contributor to and supporter of Playing With Fire, a series of free outdoor concerts held each summer in Omaha since 2004. • BSO provides support to The Zoo Bar, Lincoln’s legendary and award-winning blues venue. BSO is a sponsor of the annual ZooFest music festival. • In conjunction with Toy Drive for Pine Ridge, BSO hosts an annual toy drive and concert fundraiser for the children of Pine Ridge Reservation. • BSO regularly produces charitable events for musicians in need. As a member and donor, you are entitled to great membership benefits: • Free subscription to “Blues Notes”, our monthly newsletter that will keep you abreast of blues events in the area, blues CD reviews, and other articles of interest to blues connoisseurs! • E-blasts with late-breaking blues news. • Special pre-sale and discounted tickets to select events. • Discounts offered by generous local businesses. • Pride in belonging to a group dedicated to “Keepin’ The Blues Alive”!

Saturday, December 3rd Two shows in Benson at the Waiting Room Lounge and Reverb Times and bands TBA $10 or a new unwrapped toy adm., or BOTH shows $15 or 2 new unwrapped toys.

Sunday, December 4th The Annual Radio-Thon on KIWR, 89.7 the River on Rick Galusha’s Pacific Street Blues show from 9 to Noon.

Sunday, December 4th @ 3 p.m. THE 21ST SALOON Little Joe McCarthy, Lash LaRue & The Hired Guns, Big Daddy Caleb & The Chargers, and The Hector Anchondo Band Admission: $10 or a new, unwrapped toy The BSO will be having a Pot Luck Dinner, please bring a dish. $5 donation for the Pot Luck dinner with proceeds going to the Toy Drive.

The toy drive started in 2003 with Larry Dunn – an Omaha musician also known as Lash LaRue – a friend and a small pick-up truck. Dunn had become acutely aware of the ex- treme need of the residents after spending time on the reservation. The U.S. Census Bureau lists Pine Ridge as the most poverty-stricken area in the United States. It isn’t unusual to see frost on the inside of reservation homes during the harsh South Dakota winters. Food and heat are often scarce. Medical care is limited and without easy access. Dunn also learned that because of all this, very often the children of Pine Ridge had no holiday gifts. Each year has added more concerts and other events, such as a radiothon and concerts outside Omaha. Because of the growth of the Toy Drive, Dunn expanded its reach on Pine Ridge -- providing resourc- es to a medical clinic on the reservation, resources for the elders, including a heating fund, and educational resources for schoolchildren in Pine Ridge. What began as one person’s wish to provide for children growing up in poverty became an official non-profit organization. An organization that has relied heavily on community donations to assist the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

See www.toydriveforpineridge.com for information on donating and attending these fundraisers. Fender provided a touring van, promotion, equipment and publicity to their 2 Million plus fans! While Curry loves it when his band headlines its own gigs, he also sees the opening slot as a way of winning over new fans one lick at a time. “Part of the reason people like us so much is because we’re not just a corner-bar blues band,” he reflects. “We’re trying to make an impact and connect with audiences as best we can, even though when they see this young blond kid with a Stratocaster walk out there, they’re thinking, ‘Just get it over with.’ I know they’re there for someone else, but we’re able to grab their attention, so I like to think some of those people are walking away as fans.” Curry believes the way to convert an audience is to perform an undeniably engaging set. “One thing I really enjoy is putting together a show,” he acknowledges. “We all have so much fun when we’re up there. The 21st Saloon is already known for the national acts it brings in and is widely supported by the Omaha Blues Society, the BluesEd program and a variety of others throughout the Omaha music industry. But now it’s time to take the next step in making The 21st Saloon our home base for “The Omaha Musicians Showcase.” and “Plugged In” as our musicians network to connect local artists together. The network will encompass a variety of different sides of the music scene. We want to make this a home for local artists to gather, support, grow, and simply just enjoy what we have dedicated so much of our time and life doing. Not only do we want to have an outlet for musicians but also want to include the technical minds behind the sound board, light board, and the “gear heads.” PAGE 12 BLUES NEWS • BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA

Hi, my wife and I have a music duo called The Time Burners from Lincoln. I spent years in the blues and still have roots there if you read our bio. We often get compared to Johnny & June. We’re a vintage vibe group and have released two original albums and are just coming out with our first Christmas release called Rock Rockin’ Christmas. We enjoy entertaining folks and play a large variety of shows including in this last year here The Omaha Summer Arts Festival, Iowa State Fair, Nebraska State Fair to name a few. Our love of old music and keeping the roots of music alive has earned us fans one at a time. With a variety of Christmas shows lined up this December in the Lincoln area and the release, we were hoping you can run a small story on us? We appreciate the support and love our community. Keeping local music alive is so important and couldn’t be done without media support. Our information is available on our website and the link is below. Feel free to con- tact me. I should mention one of the songs on the Christmas album features another lead player from the area known well Mike McCracken. Mike deserves great credit for his contributions to the local music scene as well. Thanks much, Travis Koester, The Time Burners • www.thetimeburners.com

With a vari- ety of soulful, heart warming, ground stomping tunes, Ms. Chambers is sure to rise above and beyond your expecta- tions. Chambers hails from Houston, Texas. As a child, she al- ways wanted to sing, but her dreams of enlisting in the Army and attaining a degree in radio and TV broadcasting took her on a slight detour.

1 Since completing her 7 ⁄2 year term with the US Army, Annika has blazed onto the Houston blues music scene. With her self-motivated career taking the city by storm, Annika has had the opportunity to work with many of the well-known talents in the area such as Brad Absher, Paul Ramirez, The Mighty Orq, and many others. Annika along with The House Rules Band entered the 2012 International Blues Competition making the final round, and giving her numerous opportunities to showcase her talent. After the competition, Annika took advantage of an opportunity to create a demo CD with Larry Fulcher of CD Review the Phantom Blues Band and Richard Cagle, both of whom were judges for the IBC Competition.
