B L U E I N K APRIL 2016 Gator By the Bay Brings Musicians Together in Exciting Pairings Now in its 15th year, Gator By the Bay, May 5-8, 2016, has become a wildly popular San Diego festival tradition known for presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles and a fun- filled atmosphere. Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. Often lauded as the “Master of the Slide Guitar”, Roy Rogers’ distinctive style is instantly recognizable. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. Harmonica virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter John Németh has multiple Blues Music Awards nominations to his name, and his album, ‘Memphis Grease’, won Best Soul Blues Album at the 2015 Blues Music Awards. He has been nominated for the Blues Music Awards 2016 B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, to be given out on May 5. Other notable combined artists’ performances include Sugaray Rayford, Alabama Mike & the Drop Ins with harmonica master Rick Estrin and harmonica and guitar whiz-kid Jon Atkinson on Friday evening, May 6, and Jon Atkinson with Rick Estrin and Fabulous Thunderbird alumna Kim Wilson on Saturday, May 7. -

Big Walter Horton, Blues Harmonica Giant, Classic Sides 1951-1956 (3 CD) Di Bear Family, Uscito Nel 2010, Dopo La Stesura Di Questo Documento

A P R I L 2 0 2 0 Charlotte Blues Society Monthly E-Bluesletter THE NEW LIVE NORM FROM LIVING ROOMS, OR FRONT PORCHES STUCK HOW COVID-19 INSIDE WITH THE IS AFFECTING QUARANTINE US ALL BLUES POSTPONED April 5 ~ Vanessa Collier May 3 ~ Jontavious Willis A P R I L 2 0 2 0 Musings from the President "It was the best of times....it was the worst of times....." As everyone is aware by now, it is business most unusual these days, and that affects Charlotte Blues Society as well as the businesses we support with live music. CBS has been taking the cues from City, State and Federal officials regarding our events and gatherings throughout the novel coronavirus / COVID-91 pandemic. The Stay at Home order by the County has indeed affected upcoming events, and we hope every one of our members and fellow music lovers will take this advice to heart and follow it, in order that this virus be allowed to run its course with the least transmission and loss of life. We love each of you and want you to take care of your health, and stay safe: “Stay Home” This is serious stuff friends. You know when The Stones start cancelling dates we are looking at something that is epic. The Blues Music Awards in Memphis are cancelled. Live concerts throughout the Carolinas and the world have come to a halt. This is not the flu. This is not a cold. This is a moment in time that we must take action, or perhaps ,more clearly: non- action. -

CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain't Lyin' . . .”
CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain’t Lyin’ . .” radio promotion contact: Brad Hunt, The WNS Group (585) 765-2083, [email protected] Charlie’s riveting Sonoma County show brought his unstoppable, hard hitting, tone heavy sound to the audience who couldn’t get enough. Luckily someone had turned on the tape and Charlie knew just what to do – he took the tapes down to Clarksdale MS and delivered them into the capable mixing and mastering hands of Gary Vincent who in collaboration with Charlie, brought Mississippi mud to this exceptional live recording. I AIN’T LYIN’ is all Charlie. The cd is a group of painstakingly crafted original tunes penned by the hand of this Mississippi master that resonate with the land of Mississippi itself. Charlie’s music rises from the river, crosses the levy, dances through the streets and cuts straight to the heart of what it is to be alive. Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. This man cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s – thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Charlie Musselwhite may be the only musician to get a huge ovation just for opening his briefcase. Fans know that’s where he keeps his harmonicas and they’re about to hear one of the true masters work his magic on the humble instrument. -
