THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Issue 6, July 2010 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES FROM THE EDITOR Deb Lubin The period since the last newsletter was published was very busy, with planning for upcoming blues society events, going out to hear our favorite local blues bands, and our annual pilgrimage to Memphis in May for the Blues Music Awards. The BMAs are a wonderful event that all blues lovers should attend at least once. This year in Memphis, we got to see many of our favorite musicians from the Bay Area, among them Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, including Kid Andersen; the entire Tommy Castro Band, which took home several awards; Laura Chavez and Kennan Shaw from Candye Kane's band; Maria Muldaur, and others with Bay Area ties. I had so much fun reconnecting with old friends both on and off the stage. Meanwhile, the GGBS is rolling. We're getting ready for several big events that we're either sponsoring, partnering with, or supporting, including the 5th annual Redwood City Blues Festival in July, the first U.S. events of the European-based charity United by Music , the San Jose Jazz Festival in August, and events to select a member band to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in February 2011, among others. Please look for information about all of these events in this issue of the newsletter. In addition, East Bay musician/cat lover/pre-war blues specialist Joel Fritz reviews four CDs by local bands. SF-based singer Cathy Lemons reviews E.C.

B L U E I N K APRIL 2016 Gator By the Bay Brings Musicians Together in Exciting Pairings Now in its 15th year, Gator By the Bay, May 5-8, 2016, has become a wildly popular San Diego festival tradition known for presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles and a fun- filled atmosphere. Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. Harmonica virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter John Németh has multiple Blues Music Awards nominations to his name, and his album, ‘Memphis Grease’, won Best Soul Blues Album at the 2015 Blues Music Awards. He has been nominated for the Blues Music Awards 2016 B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, to be given out on May 5. Other notable combined artists’ performances include Sugaray Rayford, Alabama Mike & the Drop Ins with harmonica master Rick Estrin and harmonica and guitar whiz-kid Jon Atkinson on Friday evening, May 6, and Jon Atkinson with Rick Estrin and Fabulous Thunderbird alumna Kim Wilson on Saturday, May 7.

GUITAR MIKEY TIMELINE 1969 At the age of 5 receives a stack of 45 rpm records. By the age of 6 he finds himself recording himself singing along the records on his dad’s cassette recorder. Songs included “Kansas City” by Trini Lopez. 1976 First Television Appearances At Age 11 Mike McMillan AKA Guitar Mikey at age 11 starts The Young Canadian Blues Band. He makes several appearances with the 3 member band on a local cable show performing some 50's rock'n'roll classics as well as Johnny Winter's "Mean Town Blues". At age 11 Mike attends a Muddy Waters concert by himself. His father returns at the end of the show to pick him up. He is nowhere to be found. Eventually as Mike's dad continues to circle the auditorium he finds Mike exiting the stage door where he had been hanging out with the man himself, Muddy Waters. First Working Band Mike had just turned 12 when he joined his first working band "Phoenix". They would play local high school dances. He would continue performing as a guitar player playing in rock bands while all the time really wanting to play blues. 1980 Steel City Blues Band Mike realized that if he was going to play blues, he would have to front a band as the singer. So he began to sing blues imitating his childhood idol Johnny Winter. The familiar growling style would work for the time being. However Mike's singing would eventually grow into something all his own. He started The Steel City Blues Band.
