Doc Atlantic chair Chuck Lapp sits in to share his seasoned perspective in documentary filmmaking. Would you like to learn more about the art, craft, and business of moving image production for documentary films? Or are you just curious to hear filmmakers in conversation? Learn about the behind-the-scenes stories and be a part of the panel. BIOGRAPHIES NFB producer Paul McNeill has a passion for documentary filmmaking and experience in all aspects of filmmaking, from writing, shooting, directing and producing to editing and sound recording. His track record also includes television drama and feature filmmaking credits. In addition to being an award-winning producer, he holds a degree in business from Nova Scotia’s St. Francis Xavier University. Halifax-based Rachel Bower is an award-winning filmmaker whose varied interests have taken her from solar technology to competitive baton twirling. Her feature documentary, Time Apart: A History of Hope, which follows Holocaust survivor Alice Zuckerman as she journeys back through Eastern Europe to reunite with her lost family, appeared at film festivals around the world. Akain Wari: Building The Niger Delta, her short documentary on the use of solar technology in Nigeria, screened at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in . Her independent documentary, In the Same Boat, won best documentary at the Silver Wave . Bower also wrote and directed six thirty- minute documentaries for CBC’s Land and Sea. For her most recent documentary, The Singing Lumberjack, Bower brings the home-grown talent and gregarious personality of Canadian vocalist Charlie Chamberlain back to life in an experimental five-minute short film produced for the NFB. Even as a youngster, filmmaker Ryan Groom has always been a storyteller and had his first professional opportunity in the early ‘90s with a Commodore Amiga and a Video Toaster building videos for a local school board. Video production and Ryan took separate paths until four years ago when he had the opportunity to rediscover storytelling by being the creative force behind Trekkit TV, a series on Bell Aliant TV 1, now in its 4th season. Trekkit has taken Ryan, his camera, and great friends/family to the top of Mount Katahdin, High- lands of Scotland, Stonehenge, Iceland, Norway, and many other places off the beaten path. More about Ryan and Trekkit : http://www.trekkit.com Chuck Laap has been an independent filmmaker and activist in Halifax for over 40 years. He has produced films on the inshore fishery crisis, as well as biographies of artists and writers in Atlantic : Ernest Buckler, Kenneth Leslie, Tom Forrestall, and Robert Frank. Chuck helped to found the Atlantic Filmmakers Co-Op, NS Film Producers Association, IATSE 849, and the Atlantic Chapter of the Documentary Organization of Canada. He served on the board of the HOT DOCS Film Festival and is currently the Chair of DOC Atlantic.

Guests: Danny Thebeau, NB Filmmaker (Owl River Runners); Caley MacLennan, NS Filmmaker (Noon Gun); Rob Parsons, NB Filmmaker (Edge of the Line web series, The Divorce, Calling).

Join our intrepid group of filmmakers who were determined to produce their recent feature projects even though they were under funded or not funded at all. They did them at used car prices. Hear about their challenges, their supporters and their funny stories straight from set and throughout post production. BIOGRAPHIES Elaine Shannon spends most of her time producing as well as hosting a wellness show called Simply Zen for Bell Aliant’s TV1 Channel. She is also enjoying the success of Owl River Runners a full length feature movie, one of the chosen films for INDIECAN10K, an inaugural initiative aimed at first time feature filmmakers. Owl River Runners was an official selection and had its world premiere at the Atlantic Film festival this past September and will be screening in several other film festivals in Canada and the US including opening the Silver Wave Film Festival, stay tuned for future screening announcements. Elaine was also producer of The Divorce. A maverick and early adopter of new media Elaine has 200+ vid- eos on her youtube channel with hundreds of subscribers and over 90k views. You’ll find Elaine sharing her knowledge and wisdom at workshops and corporate training sessions, on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Linked In. Featured in Canadian Living (2012), the Financial Post magazine (May 2010), Country Guide (April 2010), Via Rail Magazine (2009) and CARP (May 2008), she is a regular guest on CBC radio locally and nationally and was a columnist for the Telegraph Journal’s magazine KV Style. Danny Thebeau joined the NB Film Co-op in 2006. He was trained at the Canadian Screen Training Centre in Directing and he obtained a film certificate from the province of NB and the NB Film Co-op through a specialized training programme. With Donovan Richard he produced Délivrance, a made for TV movie for CBC and SRC that also opened an American top 20 film festival Cinema on the Bayou in Louisiana. He also produced an award winning short film with the financial aid of Telefilm and CBC called The Bannisters in addition to about a dozen other short films. His latest director/producer credit is Owl River Runners. ORR was written by Chris Fulton and produced with Elaine Shannon and André Goguen Over the past ten years, writer/director/producer Caley MacLennan has been busy both producing his own projects and working in the edit suite on many internationally watched films and television shows. His recent editor credits include Trailer Park Boys Season 8, ’s TV Mini Series Sex & Violence, and Nickelodeon’s Rob Dyrdek’s Wildgrinders. As producer/ director, Caley has made over a dozen music videos, 7 shorts and one feature film. His films have played festivals from San Francisco to Cypress, won awards, aired on television and required 3D glasses. Rob Parsons found his voice and his courage to fully immerse himself into film after writing a blog to keep family up to date on his son’s ongoing health conditions. Rob’s first feature Calling was produced by his company Let Em Laugh productions. In 2013 Rob returned with feature film number two, The Divorce, which was the closing gala film at the 2014 Silver Wave Film Festival. In the summer of 2014 he worked as an AD on Danny The- beau’s feature film debut Owl River Runners. In the spring of 2015 Rob wrote what would be his darkest material to date Edge of the Line, a web series that will launch in late 2015. Filmmaking is now Rob’s full-time job. He has also shot, edited and delivered over 30 episodes of Elaine Shannon’s Simply Zen for Bell TV1.

After three years with Cojak Productions, he started Productions Du Milieu in 2010. Since then PDM has produced a 10 episode dramatic series, a 26 episode game show for children, an 8 episode musical show and many documentaries. PDM is working with CANAL D – Bell Media, TV5/UNIS TV and TVA CHAU-TV. René is currently vice president of l’Alliance des Producteurs Francophones du Canada (APFC) and president of Media NB. Born and raised in New Brunswick, René is dedicated to the development of a strong and vibrant television, film and new media industry in his province. Greg Hemmings is an entrepreneur, filmmaker, and movement-maker. His passion for high impact, positive social change has taken him and his team to all corners of the globe. His company Hemmings House is a certified B-Corporation and employs 12 full time change-makers who feverishly produce content that makes a difference. Their TV shows have been sold to over 60 broadcasters around the world including the W Network, CBC, CTV, Discovery Channel, Travel + Escape, BRAVO!, IFC, RUSH HD, RADx, Globosat , Turner , The Fight Network and RAI (Italy). Co-founder of MOZUS Productions, Maurice André Aubin is a seasoned producer director who has worked in every aspect of the television world during a career spanning over 30 years. After spending 16 years in public broadcasting, working with CBC Edmonton, TFO and Télé-Québec, he made the leap as an independent producer. The recipient of many distinctions and awards, he is known for his sense of vision, his innovative and original approach, as well as the fine quality of his work. Maurice André’s first love is music and he has an extensive body of work in musical productions, both as talented musician and composer and producer director. Maurice André Aubin is strongly committed to a consolidation of our regional and national film industry. He is president of the Association des producteurs du Nouveau-Brunswick and is an active member of several professional associations, including the Front des réalisateurs indépendants du Canada (FRIC), the Association des Artistes Professionnels du Nouveau-Brunswick (AAAPNB), the Writer’s Guild of Canada and ACTRA. Jean-Marc Goguen established Botsford Productions, a corporate video production company with his brother Martin Goguen and his mentor Dan Gillis in 2009. They have travelled with their camera gear to Toronto, Las Vegas, the islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and all over the Maritimes. In 2010, their work was showcased in Dubai and . Their industry focus has now expanded to include short and feature-length films. In 2012, Jean-Marc’s first major film Aller-Retour was awarded the Goujon Caille Inspiration Award at the Cinema on the Bayou film festival (Lafayette, Louisiana), Best French Film at the Silver Wave Film Festival and the Prix La Vague for Best Acadian Film at FICFA (Moncton, NB). Peter Hall is the Senior Manager of Arts and Documentary Programming for CBC Atlantic. In this role he looks after television, radio and online programs. Peter has extensive production experience after more than three decades in Canadian broadcasting. He has worked at the three major television networks and helped establish CBC Newsworld in Halifax when the news channel was created.

What is the feature film climate like for women in film now? Award winning filmmaker/screenwriter Gia Milani moderates and gets the inside track from WIFT-AT members and filmmakers Jillian Acreman and Fonya Irvine who are now journeying from producing shorts to features and television. BIOGRAPHIES TIFF award winning writer/director/producer Gia Milani’s debut feature film, All the Wrong Reasons, starring the late Cory Monteith (Glee), Karine Vanasse (Revenge), Kevin Zegers (The Mortal Instruments) and Emily Hampshire (12 Monkeys) had its world premiere at TIFF in 2013. The film won several awards including the Grolsch Film Works Discovery Prize at TIFF, the Script Accessible Award at Slamdance, and the Viewer’s Choice Award at the Silver Wave Film Festival. She was named as one of TIFF’s Top Canadian film talents to watch by CBC and Telefilm Canada. Gia is the Executive Producer of the NB feature Owl River Runners, winner of the Indiecan10K. Gia is a founding board member of Women in Film and Television Atlantic and she is an elected delegate representing New Brunswick for 2015/2016 at the WGC National Writer’s Forum. Gia is a member of the Director’s Guild of Canada (DGC), the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC), the Canadian Media Production As- sociation (CMPA), the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT), Film Indepen- dent (FIND) – Los Angeles, Women in Film and Television (WIFT) – Atlantic, and MediaNB (New Brunswick Producer’s Association).

Fonya Irvine is a writer, filmmaker, and producer at Rising Tide Pictures Inc. based in Fredericton, NB. As an accredited writer Irvine’s first script The Art of Decay won the CBC/Telefilm 3-2-1 Award in 2011. In 2014 she was the recipient of the New Brunswick Short Film Venture Grant for her script As the Crow Cries as well as the NB Linda Joy Award for her dramatic short, Anchor Lost. To cap off 2014, she wrote, produced, and directed the dramatic short Stonewalled. In 2015, she was the recipient of the artsnb Creation Grant to write her feature film, Crossbones. She is currently a member of ACTRA, WIFT-AT, and the NB Film Co-op. Jillian Acreman is a writer, filmmaker and producer based in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Originally from Ontario, Acreman joined the NB Film Co-op eight years ago. She has made five short films and produced two films for filmmakers. Jillian’s short films Broke, The Editor, The Man Who Sold the World, and The Art of Decay, a short silent film about aging, featuring NB Moncton’s Atlantic Ballet Theatre have done extremely well on the festival circuit. She has been awarded with several artsnb grants, the New Brunswick Short Film Venture Grant and won the CBC/Telefilm 3-2-1 Award in 2011. DEVELOPING & STRENGTHENING OUR FILM COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION WHEN: Friday, November 6th, 4:00PM - 5:00PM WHERE: Charlotte Street Arts Centre, upstairs auditorium Moderator UNB Film Professor Rob Gray gathers community educators together to talk film shop. Guests: Amy Bourgaize, NB Teacher (What’s Up Doc?); Sophie M. Lavoie, UNB Professor (Cinema Politica), Chris Campbell, NS Teacher & Filmmaker (Screen Arts Program, Nova Scotia Community College); Matt Rogers, Acadia University Professor, NB Filmmaker (What’s Up Doc?) This panel brings together film educators and film community members to discuss the relationship between film and education in New Brunswick, the advantages film education offers, and the obstacles it faces. This panel hopes to initiate a conversation about how we can develop and strengthen our film communities through education. BIOGRAPHIES Robert Gray is a filmmaker and screenwriter. He is a senior editor of numerocinqmagazine. com, and is chiefly responsible for “Numero Cinq at the Movies,” the weekly film column. He is a professor of film and creative writing at the University of New Brunswick. Amy Bourgaize has been a teacher in New Brunswick for 9 years. She engages in critical film pedagogy with her grade 11 English classes and has been implementing the What’s Up Doc? Film Project since its inception 6 years ago. Amy has also contributed to local film projects as producer, director, editor, and art department. Sophie M. Lavoie teaches Spanish and Latin American Film at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton and has been a co-organizor of Cinema Politica Fredericton for the past 6 years. Chris Campbell is a long-time media creator who uses new technologies in film, video, audio and the web to tell stories. He teaches producing and post production in Screen Arts at the Nova Scotia Community College in Halifax. He’s also taught workshops in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Bermuda. He edited a feature-length documentary film about the end of segregation in Bermuda, shot video, recorded sound, hosted radio and tv shows, made web sites, and served on arts boards and juries. Matt Rogers is a filmmaker and teaches in the School of Education in the Faculty of Professional Studies at Acadia University. His research focuses on filmmaking in the classroom and its potential for community engagement and social action. He is also the creator and coordinator of the annual What’s Up Doc Festival that has run in Fredericton since 2009.
