Also, the paper provides information about the hayfields floral richness, a great scientific value for Romania and Europe. The study of the flora was carried out in several stages: 2005-2008, 2013, 2017-2018. In the studied area, 397 taxa were identified, distributed in 82 families with therapeutic potential, represented by 164 medical taxa, 37 of them being in the European Pharmacopoeia 8.5. The study reveals that most plants contain: volatile oils (13.41%), tannins (12.19%), flavonoids (9.75%), mucilages (8.53%) etc. This plants can be used in the treatment of various human disorders: disorders of the digestive system, respiratory system, skin disorders, muscular and skeletal systems, genitourinary system, in gynaecological disorders, cardiovascular, and central nervous sistem disorders. In the study plants protected by law at European and national level were identified: Echium maculatum, Cephalaria radiata, Crambe tataria, Narcissus poeticus ssp. radiiflorus, Salvia nutans, Iris aphylla, Orchis morio, Orchis tridentata, Adonis vernalis, Dictamnus albus, Hammarbya paludosa etc. Keywords: Fărăgău, medicinal plants, human disease, Mureş County 1. -

Zeltnera beyrichii (Torr. & A. Gray) Mans., an insufficiently acknowledged North American medicinal plant species, may be considered a pharmacological substitute for commercial C. erythraea Rafn, since it accumulates in aerial parts nearly the same amount of secoiridoid glycosides: swertiamarin, gentiopicrin, and sweroside (13.76, 7.56, and 0.17 mmol per 100 g dry weight, respectively) in plants grown under greenhouse condition, and a considerable amount of xanthones: decussatin and eustomin. Additionally, Z. beyrichii produced as much biomass during cultivation in RITA® temporary immersion bioreactors as greenhouse-grown plants, in a third of the time. Plants grown in bioreactors contained moderate levels of total phenolics and total flavonoids, and possessed modest antioxidant activity and antimicrobial potential against eight bacterial and eight fungal species. Therefore, this species may be highly recommended for cultivation either in natural environment, or in bioreactors under in vitro conditions, for producing compounds of interest of modern pharmacology and food industry. Species Information a) Name: Scientific: Centaurium muehlenbergii (Griseb.) Wight ex Piper Synonyms: C. curvistamineum (Wittr.) Abrams and C. floribundum (Benth.) B.L. Rob. (Missouri Botanical Gardens - W3TROPICOS November 2001; ITIS November 2001) Kartesz (1994) does not list C. floribundum as a synonym. English name: Muhlenberg’s centaury; The name Centaurium is from the greek word kentaurous, referring to the centaur Chiron who supposedly discovered the medicinal properties of the genus (Hitchcock et al. 1969). Family: Gentianaceae - Gentian Family b) Classification: Centaurium is generally considered to be a taxonomically difficult genus (Cronquist et al. 1984; Hickman 1993; Holmes & Wivagg 1996; Mansion, pers. com., 2001; Pringle, pers. com.; 2001, Turner 1993) and further work is needed to clarify the taxonomic status of the species within this genus. Dr. Pringle suggests that the name C. muehlenbergii has been misapplied to C. exaltatum, C. tenuiflorum, C. davyi, C. erythraea, C. pulchellum, and possibly three or four other species. Similarly he feels the synonym C. floribundum has often been applied to North American specimens of the naturalized C. tenuiflorum (Pringle, pers. com., 2001). Guilhem Mansion is currently studying the molecular systematics of the genus Centaurium on a worldwide basis. His preliminary results suggest it would be useful to recognize a ‘Centaurium muehlenbergii complex’ which includes C. -

A new molecular survey is thus needed. Methods Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) 1 and 2 and the 5.8S gene. Parsimony and Bayesian approaches were used. Key Results A close correlation between geography and the phylogenetic tree based on ITS sequences was found in all the analyses, with three main groups being resolved: (1) comprising the most widely distributed circum- Mediterranean/Eurosiberian sections; (2) the western Mediterranean sections; and (3) the eastern Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian sections. The results show that the sectional classification in current use needs major revision, with many old sections being merged into larger ones. -

The Dacian knowl- edge of the curative properties of medicinal plants was documented by Herodotus, Hippocrates, Galen, and Dioscorides. It must be emphasized that modern chemical screening has confirmed the therapeutic properties of the medicinal plants used by the Dacians. More interesting is that Dacians used many of these herbs for differ- ent dishes. Practically, for Dacians, food was medicine. Recent research on some Romanian medicinal plants has highlighted their pharmacognostical importance. It is known that currently, the importance and dynamics of the research on medicinal plants in the area of drug discovery continues to increase worldwide. The main reason is not only the high efficiency of secondary metabolites in case of serious diseases (cancer, viral infections, malaria, etc.) but also the minimization of the side effects of the synthetic drugs. Traditional medicine still continues to have major importance in many areas of the world, especially in low-income regions [1–7]. A New Species of Zeltnera (Gentianaceae) from Tamaulipas, Mexico

ISSN 2153 733X A NEW SPECIES OF ZELTNERA (GENTIANACEAE) FROM TAMAULIPAS, MEXICO BILLIE L. TURNER Plant Resources Center The University of Texas Austin, Texas 78712 ABSTRACT A new taxon, Zeltnera nesomii B.L. Turner, sp. nov., is described from the Sierra de San Carlos in Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is seemingly most closely related to the Z. calycosa complex of northern Mexico and closely adjacent Texas but differs in numerous characters, including ecogeography, branching habit, and leaf, corolla, and anther size. A photograph of the holotype is provided, along with a map comparing the distribution of the two species. KEY WORDS : Gentianaceae, Zeltnera, Z. calycosa , Mexico, Tamaulipas In Mansion’s (2004) phyletic dismemberment of the classically conceived Centaurium , the present novelty is positioned in the predominantly North American genus Zeltnera . In his account, because of its small anthers and corollas, Z. nesomii readily keys to or near Z. quitensis (Kunth) Mansion. But, as well noted by Broome (1976), the latter “is always easily recognized because of the small tetramerous flowers,” a character not employed in Mansion’s key to species. Zeltnera nesomii apparently belongs to Mansion’s “Texan group” of taxa, which includes 8 species, most of these treated by Turner (1993), albeit as part of Centaurium. Among these, Z. nesomii is seemingly most closely related to Z. calycosa (Buckl.) Mansion. The latter, however, has a larger, less intricately branched habit and larger floral parts and its geographic distribution and ecology are distinct from the new species. -

KONJEVIĆ **1 Institute for Biological Research ”Siniša Stanković”, Bulevar despota Stefana 142, 11060 Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro* Faculty of Biology, Institute of Botany, University of Belgrade, Takovska 43, 11060 Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro** Abstract The effect of sucrose on fruiting, seed production, and seed germination of lesser centaury [Centaurium pulchellum (Sw.) Druce] was examined using explants of flowers and flower buds. Sucrose concentrations in the culture medium ranged from 0.003 to 0.3 M. It has been shown that the number of auxiliary buds, capsules dimension, number of viable seeds per capsule and seed dimensions increased with the increase of sucrose concentrations. The highest values were recorded at sucrose concentrations higher than 0.03 M, except for seeds size, which were larger at sucrose concentration ranging from 0.003 to 0.1 M. The germination of in vitro produced seeds was affected by previous culture history: a higher germination percentage was obtained in seeds that were raised from explants originally grown on medium with sucrose concentrations higher than 0.003 M. Additional key words: explants, germination, gibberellic acid, lesser centaury. ⎯⎯⎯⎯ Lesser centaury [Centaurium pulchellum (Sw.) Druce] is in vitro flowering and self-fertilization if grown on an annual herb that is self-fertilized forming dichasial hormone-free culture media, which resulted in the inflorescence. It’s widely spread in Europe, but rather production of viable seeds. Another advantage of this rare in Serbia and Montenegro where its natural habitat is system is that time-consuming/laborious steps needed for restricted to a few regions in Vojvodina (the northern part the transfer of regenerated plants to the soil, of Serbia). -

UBSDELL Department of Botany , University of Reading * ABSTRACT Analysis of populations of Centaurium erythraea Rafn subsp. erythraea and C. Iittorale (D. Turner) Gilmour subsp. Iittorale has shown that both show a wide range of morphological variation. Much of this variation is retained in cultivation and five varieties are recognized of subsp. erythraea and four of subsp. Iittorale. Despite this variation the two subspecies are quite distinct. Analysis of mixed populations of the two species from the coasts of Anglesey and Lancashire has shown tbat some plants are, to varying degrees, intermediate and probably of hybrid origin. In the majority of populations from the Lancashire coast, backcrossing to C. [ittorale appears to have taken place, although two suggest backcrossing to C. erythraea. This is in contrast to the situation in the population from Anglesey in which only F.-like hybrids were present. Analysis of two populations from northern Germany show all plants to be intermediate and F.-like. INTRODUCTION The genus Centaurium Hill (Erythraea Borkh. nom. iIlegit.) of the Gentianaceae is widespread in Europe, especially around the Mediterranean. Taxonomic investigations of the genus have pre sented great difficulties since the species are extremely variable. _Parallel variation in several characters is common in the groups of related species, and there have also been reports of natural hybrids. Species and infra-specific taxa are, therefore, often difficult to define and the literature is full of nomenclatural confusion.
